Mermaids being investigated by the Charity Commission - thread 2

The first thread, towards the end of which there was a discussion about having a second thread but it wasn't added:

Mermaids being investigated by the charity commission
http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4644323-mermaids-being-investigated-by-the-charity-commissionn_

There's been a new development so maybe a second thread would be useful:

Lottery pauses trans charity cash during investigation

It’s pronounced Penny-stun.

I had always wondered.

Allison Bailey:

twitter.com/bluskyeallison/status/1580263265841872896?s=46&t=KHj7ytjXGsjQ62-HPypZMQ

"A lot of people have commented that police forces around the country & indeed the National Crime Agency are either Stonewall Diversity Champions or signed up to their ethos. In my opinion this is a conflict of interest that creates the impression of bias. It cannot continue."

Of course the police should never have signed up to any lobby group, let alone one parading the slogan "acceptance without exception". It wasn't wrong to point it out then and it's not wrong to point it out now.

Thanks @GeraniumKF and @TheClogLady

Thsts worse than I thought. Bloody hell. I got pulled up in using the word encouraged as the Times quoted tacit approval and randoms on twitter were arguing that “tacit approval” was ok. They would not agree that even tacit approval was a failure. But this example is blatant encouragement.

I’ve also been told that breast binders are ok to send out, and it’s a caring thing to do to make sure they fit properly. That porn is ok to do in your spare time as a children’s charity employee, and it’s not mermaid’s fault that they didn’t know about their pro-paedo trustee and as they sacked him immediately they found out so that’s fine.

The people arguing with me are determined not to look at mermaid’s failures. It’s all smoothed over with minimising and semantics. You’d think they’d want the very best for vulnerable children, but they are absolutely wedded to the ideology.

How people argue like this on twitter all day every day I’ve no idea. I’m exhausted. Need to delete twitter snd go and look at some pictures of kittens or sunsets.

Have you pointed them to the footage of Monroe Bergdorf saying that it is totally normal for an 11 year old child to be dressed in drag and paraded in nightclubs and have grown ass men throw money at him (see mayas most recent article). Julia Long asked this in a room full of people, she was escorted out. No one spoke up to agree with her. It is one of the most shocking things i have seen in this whole sickening shambles, and that includes the most recent artwork from Mew.

TheHarpySings · 12/10/2022 20:41

I'm just going to jump in here and point people who are lurking or new Mumsnetters to this thread I started in 2018 about a trans rights conference I went to in London, which was also attended a who's who of prominent figures on the TRA side of the fence, including Susie Green and other people from Mermaids.

My 5th post in the thread details the talk run by Susie Green.

We're Still Here Conference September 8th: A report from the inside

My anonymous attendance of this event apparently did not go down well with Mermaids, according to page 8 of their 2019 accounts. I quote:

"Despite working with the organisers to maximise security for the event, an individual with transphobic motivations still managed to infiltrate the conference and share their negative views of it on social media. Fortunately, the young person was not identified publicly, but this was the watershed moment that demanded we increase our security and vetting procedures across the board. Improving safety involves additional resource in terms of time, money and administration - which we have unashamedly committed ourselves to doing - but this means that some 2018 numbers were lower than originally anticipated, and in the period for 2018/19 we attended 131 events across the UK. Having put these security processes in place, we are back on track in 2019 to meet our targets for the next year."

So, me turning up at a public event which was also being attended by JANE FAE, (a person who is an advocate of extreme porn), was the main safeguarding concern for Mermaids at that time.

...Ok hun.

ResisterRex · 12/10/2022 20:58

I don't know how I missed that thread at the time but it's sent chills through me. Especially this:

"gave some insight into tactics the TRAs will probably start using in England and Wales as they were successful in Scotland.
**
He said the TRAs need to build allies in mainstream women and children’s organisations so it looks like they care about them.
"

It's not really a surprise but it's still shocking to see it written down.

Write to your MP - Baroness Nichols suggests always cc’ing someone else in (and making sure they all know someone else can read it) so email your MP and if you can find out anything re: likely opposition candidates, add them, and maybe your local cllr and the leader of your council.

if you email a head teacher, add a governor and a local cllr in

This is such good advice. Let whoever you're writing to know that they aren't the only people reading it, and everyone else knows that they've read it too. Accountability.

What is about the area around Manchester? They have Clitheroe, too...

Wow - well done, Harpy! Yes, says it all about their priorities.

Wow, that is an amazing thread Harpy !!

Quite. Whatever did they want to hide, hmm.

Datun · 13/10/2022 00:59

So, from that lot, one Webberley struck off, the other suspended, Harrop disciplined by the GMC and Mermaids being investigated by the charity commission.

Wonder what that right side of history feels like now.

TheBiologyStupid · 13/10/2022 01:53

Yes, we thought they'd taken us down the rabbit hole but actually it's through the looking glass. (Interesting, given that Lewis Carroll /Charles Dodgson came up with them both, given his proclivities...)

Melroses · 13/10/2022 01:58

It is fascinating reading that we're still here thread again. Thanks for doing it.

Liz Truss signals support for investigation into trans charity Mermaids

Also in the Times. Mermaids still giving advice to schools in Scotland, no surprise there:

rogdmum · 13/10/2022 06:33

At least ScotGov seem to be accepting that maybe, just maybe there is an ever so slight problem sign posting to Mermaids. Baby steps. 🙄🙄🙄

rogdmum · 13/10/2022 06:35

Of course if Mermaids do end up getting stripped of their charity status (and I’m still not convinced it will happen), it will likely be seen as a bad thing up here which only happened because of the abhorrent transphobes.

Igneococcus · 13/10/2022 06:54

Oh I don't know @rogdmum it might be wishful thinking but listening to my children (S4 and first year at university) I can sense a change of mood. My two never bought into gender ideology (having two biologist parents might have helped) but the things they say about their friends makes me feel a tiny wee bit optimistic. My 14 year old and his friends sound utterly fed up with having this stuff pushed at them.

rogdmum · 13/10/2022 07:01

Igneoccocus Did you see the new coming out guide published by LGBTYS on 4 Oct? So published with sign posting to Mermaids (along with a parent quote also referencing Mermaids) after the scandal broke?
lgbtyouth.org.uk/media/2892/tnq-coming-out-e-use.pdf

I do think that ultimately this will pass as you’ve suggested via children just getting fed up of it all and moving onto something else.

Hmmm it’s only now I realise I have family history from both Penistone and Scunthorpe.

Igneococcus · 13/10/2022 07:16

I've seen it mentioned @rogdmum and it doesn't surprise me at all.
I think this will pass I'm just really sorry for everyone caught up in it. dd (18) says quite a few of her schoolmates changed back to standard pronouns and removed all mention of being non-binary from their social media accounts the moment they left school. It's like as soon as the peer pressure goes they drop it.

MrsJamin · 13/10/2022 07:35

A local council removes a link to Mermaids from their website and makes the local news site- it'd be great if this happened everywhere, more people would know about Mermaids. I need to tell my council to remove it, there's enough reasons already.

Looks like Jameela and Munroe still going the party line. To the extent they put out absolutely identical statements. Wonder how much mermaids paid them….

Surrey County Council have removed a link signposting to mermaids within the last few days.
