"And yet even after that episode, even after his presence in a female bathroom made girls scream, still Izzard invades women’s spaces."

@Mochudubh Thank you! I knew he reminded me of something, it's been bugging me for days.

SidewaysOtter · 03/10/2022 18:43

Well, the monitors are out on this thread, aren’t they? <waves>

Will I go to Parenting website Purgatory for this?

You can join me on the naughty step for commenting on someone’s appearance. We must be kind!

ColeensBoot · 03/10/2022 18:47

I actually hadn't heard of this podcast. 'spiked' Thought it was the new term for peaked. To represent the absolute ridiculousness of where we are in 2022.

Abitofalark · 03/10/2022 18:57

Brendan's on fire. On a good day, you can't beat him for plain speaking and pinning down what is and what isn't. He is so right about the fawning. I happened to see it on that Sky portrait artist programme where EI formally announced his adopted status and requirement for pronouns and etc.

@TheClogLady and @IcakethereforeIam

I'm surprised it's still
up an hour after it was posted.

BloodAndFire · 03/10/2022 19:22

@TheClogLady
Ironic, isn’t it? That the transwomen who are MOST trustworthy are the ones we are LEAST likely to encounter in a toilet or gym changing room.
But that’s a side effect of their respectful understanding of women’s rights and needs versus Izzard’s total disregard.

While I agree with you broadly, I don't think it's 'ironic' or 'a side effect' at all. I think it's absolutely at the heart of the matter.

The males I trust LEAST in women's spaces are those who think it's OK for them to go in there.

Love Brendan O'Neill and love Spiked. They're one of the few media outlets speaking up about this nonsense. Weekly Spiked podcast is well worth a listen too. I'm not sure Brendan is cancelled is he? They can't cancel you if are unrepentant and have your own relatively untouchable outlet for your work.

Nah I don't think he can be cancelled. Brendan and some other old Revolutionary Communist Party members actually founded ( own?) Spiked afaik.

He has a great way with words. But can come across a bit whiney on radio or TV. I remember him stating ' feminism is about policing men now'. Bit of a broad brush there matey.
Thing about these old lefties is they are brilliant debaters , very trenchant and strident in their opinions.

I knew a few old RCP heads way back. Very bossy and self righteous. Ideally matched with the TRAs in fact. Claire Fox was another one. They can't cancel her either : she's in the House of Lords.

Interestingly I went to a gallery recently - the kind of place you would expect to have embraced gender neutral spaces - and instead there were Men and Women's toilets, clearly market as such, and a single-use space with writing all - and I mean ALL over the door - staying Gender Neutral, single occupancy, possibly explaining what facilities were in there, possibly mentioning non-binary as well.... absolutely no mistaking the fact that this would be the place for people who don't feel 'safe' in the other two.

I saw an older man looking at all the signs and then hopping into the men's. i went into the women's. It was such a relief to have it so clearly defined and no one could argue they were being excluded or subjected to literal violence.

ReunitedThorns · 03/10/2022 20:57

The articles in various newspapers about how brilliant Eddie Izzard looks in a dress are clearly there to wind people up. No one seriously believes it, and I have to say "well done" to Mr Izzard himself because it's such easy and free publicity.

PaulineBrady · 07/10/2022 20:33

Sorry to lower the tone, but I can’t help think of Eddie in a stall, tights round his ankles, pissing like the store horse, breaking wind loudly, almost following through on a thunderous fart and yanking up his undies before stepping out and saying to someone waiting outside “I’d give it a minute”.

Abhannmor · 07/10/2022 23:37

And 'I'm sorry but there's no bog roll left!'

FunnyTalks · 09/10/2022 14:02

I read this after coming up the stairs from the coach station loos. The thick stench of male urine clouds the stair well and the lobby space above. In fact the only place I got away from it was in the mercifully separate women's loos.

What the fuck do men do in there?

SecretTransTwitterEngineer · 09/10/2022 14:18

That Spiked article was right out of the 80's

Like where do you think trans men and women have been peeing for decades on end? The trans moral panic has gotten so bonkers. Do you think Stephen Whittle was going to the women's in the 80's or Christine Burns or Caroline Cossey were going to the men's? smh

beastlyslumber · 09/10/2022 14:23

In the eighties, everyone agreed that toilets should be segregated by sex and no one thought that having long hair and wearing eyeliner meant you were a girl.

Bring back the 80s.

beastlyslumber · 09/10/2022 14:24

Just came back to note that Brendan O'Neill, who wrote this article, interviews Malcolm Clark of the LGB Alliance on his podcast this week. Worth a listen.

Datun · 09/10/2022 14:27

I really like the way O'Neill writes. It's punchy and interesting. And amusing.

That is what the photo of Izzard coming out of the ladies’ really spoke to – that we now live in a world where validating the delusions of men is more important than respecting the reality of women’s lives.

Yes, other people validate it, but it's not just about validation. I'm not being specific about Izzard, but many men enjoy the transgression and the discomfort that it brings to women and girls.

Most of these men can't fail to realise that there is a huge pushback against this. But it doesn't stop them. It tells you everything.

ArabellaScott · 09/10/2022 19:33

Like where do you think trans men and women have been peeing for decades on end?

All over the place, it seems.
