www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11204029/Tory-MP-Penny-Mordaunts-brother-avoids-jail-admitting-sending-sex-images-decoy-schoolgirl.html

I posted this last night and do not understand why it was deleted.
I post again without comment.

Good character = has a well paid professional job and hasn't been caught before.

KittenKong · 13/09/2022 12:33

As my father used to say ‘what a bloody family’ (usually about us!)

inkjet · 13/09/2022 13:17

As someone said on Twitter, obviously she is not responsible for his crimes but when you are campaigning to remove safeguarding for women and children it is relevant for people to know this about your immediate circle.

FlorettaB · 13/09/2022 13:34

12 and 14. Jesus. It’s so depressing. For every one caught by police ‘decoys’ or vigilante groups, how many end up abusing young girls?

I think we need to look at the law around consent and age in particular. There is a big difference between a 14 and a 16 year old having sex with each other and a man in his 20s or 30s having sex with a girl under the age of 16. The penalties for the latter need to be raised.

OMG i did not know of any of this, thank god shes not PM then

LaughingPriest · 13/09/2022 18:24

Gross. Just disgusting.

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/09/2022 18:27

"Recorder of Leeds Judge Guy Kearl QC said he dismissed the suggestion that as a result of the job performed by Mordaunt’s sister, Conservative MP Penny Mordaunt, his case had been different.

He said: “I take into account that suggestion that as a result of the job performed by your sibling which is an MP your case is somewhat different to other offenders’. I sit here in this court daily and view many of these cases and as far as I can see your case has not been dealt with in anyway inappropriate or different to other cases.”

Yuck

GreyCarpet · 13/09/2022 19:22

Appalling. A colleague of mine got 2.5 years for the same offence and was caught in the same way.

GreyCarpet · 13/09/2022 19:23

Good character = has a well paid professional job and hasn't been caught before.

Same was said of my colleague. Along with all the good work he did in the community.

exwhyzed · 13/09/2022 19:26

I posted on the deleted thread to say something like

'Baffled as to how she thought this would play out if she became PM'

It pre dates the leadership contest so it hardly was going to come out of the blue.

There wasn't anything deletable I saw but I didn't come back to the thread until this morning by which time it had been zapped so perhaps it 'kicked off' after I posted.

GrabbyGabby · 13/09/2022 19:32

This was deleted lightning quick last night, for a very unclear reason. Something like we dont mind people commenting on mews stories, but this has gone beyond that and we are taking it down. There were less than 20 posts at that point i reckon.

The mods were VERY quick of the mark

HotPenguin · 13/09/2022 19:34

Wow, he met the decoy on a chat about A levels, it was no accident. What a disgusting individual.

I was surprised it was taken down and I don't understand why
Perhaps it was because I suggested that it might be both her TRA brother AND her paedophile brother who would be keen for males to be allowed access to women and girls spaces.

This ^

Mordor will be wanting to keep her head down for a while but she'll know women will join the dots

No, don't worry, apparently he is ..."of exemplary character, " so says his defense lawyer. An example to whom remains vague, prison dodging nonces, maybe?

This is disgraceful. Smacks of public school boys helping each other out.

Salamander44 · 14/09/2022 08:40

He should be in jail. What a joke. Can the public complain about his sentence?

I wondered this too. Utterly sickening.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 14/09/2022 08:42

Can this be referred to the lenient sentence review thingy?

Sorry - hadn't spotted this thread before.

In terms of the sentencing guidelines, this falls into category 1A. There are several mitigating factors present (remorse, previous good character, first offence, steps taken to address behaviour) and there do not appear to be any aggravating factors. He pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, which results in a one-third reduction in sentence. A 6-month suspended sentence is therefore what I would expect. Whilst it could be referred for review as an unduly lenient sentence, I would expect any such challenge to fail. This appears to be a perfectly normal sentence for the crime reported.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 17/10/2022 21:40

Less wealthy offender got 6 months for same but over 14. Were the sentencing guidelines even followed? Shocking.

BitossiBlues · 17/10/2022 22:12

MoltenLasagne · 13/09/2022 12:01

Is "exemplary character" just lawyer speak for from a wealthy enough family to buy his way out of trouble? It's amazing how many would be rapists and paedophiles are apparently upstanding members of the community according to their defense lawyers otherwise.

It's right up there with "promising career", usually deployed in favour of rapist sportsmen. Basically it's an appeal to the jury's emotions, to weigh up career/social standing/family connections/wealth creation capability against the feelings of some stupid girl who, in he eyes of the misogynist criminal justice system, was probably asking for it, should just get over it and should stop trying to ruin his life.

''The Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme allows the public to ask the Attorney General to refer a sentence to the Court of Appeal for being too low.
You must submit your request to the Attorney General’s Office within 28 calendar days of the sentencing.
Provide as much information as you can about the case, like the:

  • name of the person who got the sentence
  • date the sentence was given
  • court where the case was held
  • crime committed''

Yes. As per my post, the sentence in this case is entirely in line with the sentencing guidelines.

Since the sentence is in line with the sentencing guidelines, there is no point in doing this. The sentence is not unduly lenient.
