Family day out. Then my 13 year old daughter and I had to walk past 3 rows of urinals with men pissing in them to then experience disgusting piss laden toilets. My daughter is introverted and very cleanliness driven. It maybe ok for the robust but it broke my heart. This is a one off of course but I am not supporting this as policy in the U.K. just for a minority.

Yuck. I had a similar (though not quite as bad experience) at a mixed sex loo in a palace in Stockholm. Huge queue there too. Gaps under doors - no floor to ceiling doors. Felt revolted by smell and very uncomfortable having to use the facilities ( was menopausal and was desperate situation) and I wasn’t quick either such that someone banged on door and I got glared at on coming out … . To be honest, put me off Stockholm massively.

TheEggChair · 04/09/2022 09:00

All these open loos and mixed facilities are meant to be in the name of liberalisation. However, in reality it's an oppressive & mysogynistic practice designed to keep women uncomfortable and scared.

poster82 · 04/09/2022 09:06

It'll be much worse today on race day Envy (definitely not envy)

CatherinaJTV · 04/09/2022 09:19

toilet are ALWAYS disgusting in such settings, also "women only" toilets (often because the women don't want to sit down and hover to pee without proper aim, or lay down tp that they then piss on and let drop on the floors).

EvelynBeatrice · 04/09/2022 09:30

CatherinaJTV - Yes, I agree that toilets in some settings are often not as pristine as they should be. However, I’m afraid that the mixed sex element makes them much worse. Women take longer in the loo - periods, menopause, pregnancy and post parted issues , stomach disorders ( more common in females) all impact. Additionally this set up was a big issue for a woman with a baby and small toddler in tow. In the U.K. she’d have been able to leave the door open a bit to watch baby in pram - not here - and she wasn’t prepared for the set up unlike the harassed sweating scandi lady who had come equipped with sling to move her baby from the buggy to a sling to hang round her neck while she manoeuvred them all into the tiny cubicle. Many women also prefer single sex environments for their privacy and dignity, before we even get to safety.

TheEggChair · 04/09/2022 09:32

I carry a pack of anti bacwipes or Dettol spray to clean the loo b4 using. I prefer the Dettol spray and you can buy a handbag sized can from superdrugs. Perfect for cleaning the loo seat and handles.

helpfulperson · 04/09/2022 09:36

But this isn't particularly new on the continent. On a campsite I camped on about 15 years ago the toilet block was rows of cubicles open to the air on top and with large gaps under the dividing wall and door. Used by everyone. Doors opened directly onto the campground.

We went to the French GP. Toilets were clearly sex segregated and were spotlessly clean on both days.

It can, and should, be a given.

pipwoes · 04/09/2022 09:46

Totally agree. Two bars by us have got mixed loos and are tiny. I've been in to be greeted by open door and man peeing then have to go in, put seat down and avoid puddles. Vile

Rightsraptor · 04/09/2022 09:55

I see this as a very unsubtle way to keep women out of these places. So much misogyny still.

VictoriaWoodwasfab · 04/09/2022 09:59

IME the Dutch have cared little about anything for a long time. The direction of travel is concerning.

Terfydactyl · 04/09/2022 12:29

Shit pressed post too soon
Or is it that yet again we have to clean up after the men piss all over, literally, our spaces

Seems eerily familiar to the days when a lack of public facilities was a way of restricting how far women could travel or for how long they could be outside the home.

Vive la France 😍

flyingbuttress43 · 05/09/2022 19:24

I wwent to Silverstone to the British GP last year - separate male and female loos. Hope it stayed the same this year.

poster82 · 05/09/2022 19:27

@flyingbuttress43 it's the tracks that host the event so depends on the host track not the sport as a whole. I've been to some that have great set ups with separate permanent toilets, and one that was nearly all unisex portaloos (not enough) with no hand washing facilities, that was vile and ruined the whole day for me.

LemonLymanDotCom · 05/09/2022 20:05

Been to the Montreal GP a few times. Toilets were fine, relatively clean (far better than Glastonbury) for portaloos. However did get shat on by a seagull when queuing for them, so that was more my concern the rest of the weekend.

antelopevalley · 05/09/2022 20:29

I like single sex and clean toilets. but you cant go abroad and demand they behave exactly like us.

Why not? If they can do it in France, why can't they do it in the Netherlands?

MrsJamin · 05/09/2022 22:06

I was at the Belgian grand Prix. Open urinals everywhere. I wondered whether it was just me that was appalled by the blatant marking out of Men's Territory. One time I looked over to try and spot my family and I literally saw a full penis by accident. It's disgusting and makes you feel like you're in the men's loos literally the whole time. Very alienating to women. (Additionally OP you have my sympathy, the orange army were bad enough at Spa but it was overwhelming at the Dutch GP. I don't think I'd go to another grand Prix where the Dutch fans were the majority again. It's horrible being up close to the sheer blatant racism.)

Ndd135632 · 05/09/2022 23:52

@MrsJamin oh that’s awful. How did they play the racism out? Thing that gets me is why the urinals are at the front and you need to walk past them to the toilets.

OP posts:
poster82 · 06/09/2022 07:26

@MrsJamin yes we avoid the RB "home" races for that reason, even when we've seen some really good deals, it's bad enough seeing the irritating orange flares on the TV.

MrsJamin · 06/09/2022 09:38

They cheered when Lewis crashed at Spa. Scumbags. And you could hear boos behind Lewis when he had his post-race interview on Sunday and not behind Russell. The different way they treat the Mercedes drivers is very telling. Verstappen clearly doesn't think any differently to his fans as he has never shown any sportsmanship towards Lewis. His father also holds racist views and Verstappen didn't distance himself from them.
