"some people have brains more similar to their opposite sex
In what way? I’d appreciate some links to peer reviewed studies and data in scientific journals to understand your viewpoint. Ta."

And I would really like someone to explain to me why, if this is true, there isn't a push to use this data to identify transgender people as part of a diagnosis before giving drugs and surgery.

A VERY good point, indeed.

If this is observable in the brain, then Bob's our uncle, no?

I'll avoid the obvious quip here... 😉

What is the correct line to draw in professional sport when a woman, who has female sex organs and XX chromosomes has naturally occurring levels of a hormone that provide huge competitive advantages against other women?

What DSD condition are you referring to? Testosterone is produced by testes, which are male reproductive organs.

(I suspect you may be confused or misinformed regarding males with 5-ARD, who have a Y chromosome and internal testes, and no female organs.)

BiscuitLover3678 · 25/08/2022 16:22

Perhaps because transgenderism is a scientific human experience and that yes some people have brains more similar to their opposite sex. Just like it is accurate that some people are attracted to their own gender. You can’t pretend it’s not a real thing, even if you dislike the politics around how those people are treated.

Oh that sounds interesting @BiscuitLover3678 . Could you point me to the research about the differences between female and male brains and any research about transwomen's and transmen's brains. This could be really helpful for our understanding.

I don't know why that research hasn't been widely publicised. If there is a way to test if someone has a male brain in a female body (or vice versa), then we would know that they are really transgender, and these are the people who need to have all the medical treatments, while those who don't have an opposite sex brain can have psychological treatment to help them to resolve their confusion.

Of course this is total nonsense, because brains can't be in the wrong body. Try again @BiscuitLover3678.

I've just read the whole thread, I can see no abuse from GC posters. I've had a post deleted for calling someone 'petal'Grin.

I'm not apologising for that. Actually, make my follow up post fit better, so quite pleased.

Be interesting to see the response to the FoI.

Maybe a misinformed reference to PCOS? That's not a DSD of course, but can cause some XX women to have elevated levels of testosterone. But the levels aren't anywhere near male levels, it doesn't induce male puberty/development and the syndrome generally comes with metabolic issues such that women with it aren't at all advantaged when it comes to sport.
It's pretty much irrelevant.

One woman making a comment that sounded much like a mildly exasperated mother is exactly the same as a torrent of abuse from lots of men, didn't you know that?

ArabellaScott · 25/08/2022 18:50

Course it is. We are held to a higher standard. I wonder why that is?

JellySaurus · 25/08/2022 11:05

Tricky, though. How do you include transgenderism in an exhibition about human experience without presenting it from one side of the debate? The museum can't get it right for getting it wrong.

Maybe they choose to go with the genderist language because the backlash from trans ideologues is vastly more aggressive than the measured reactions and sensible debates from realists, pluralists and people interested in safeguarding the vulnerable.

I see your point about the aggression faced by anyone who dares stand up to the genderists. It's frightening and dangerous.

But it's the absolute duty of anyone in a role that includes education - teachers, obviously, but also museum curators etc - to tell children the truth.

IcakethereforeIam · 25/08/2022 19:04

It is kind of surreal that they're accusing me of 'gaslighting'. Is...is that irony?

Which museum would be a better fit for an exhibition like this? I suppose it's a kind of social science but I'd hope to see a bigger picture on the development and the effects.

Disclaimer, not really sure what's included in the social sciences.

Do you know what 'literal' literally means?

Which this exhibit does not do. It presents in a neutral manner, as if it is just giving the visitor the facts for them to draw their own conclusions. Only they're not giving the facts. It is a fake neutrality. They are using the believers' language and not giving any indication of the known and potential harms (other than the individual's personal comment about how far they were willing to take bodily modification) nor of the controversies around it.

"Igneococcus · Today 17:46
Why is naturally high testosterone in women an "ethical" issue rather than a medical one?
I consider it ethical. What is the correct line to draw in professional sport when a woman, who has female sex organs and XX chromosomes has naturally occurring levels of a hormone that provide huge competitive advantages against other women? Because excluding them from competing/ requiring them to take medication and including them in their natural state can all be seen as unfair, but sporting bodies are having to make these decisions. I think it's an interesting moral debate and very topical."

So, women with naturally high testosterone in women's sport are an ethical issue but we aren't allowed to debate actual men in women's sport? Have I got that right?

ErrolTheDragon · 25/08/2022 19:51

sporting bodies are having to make these decisions.

Are there any examples anyone can cite where sporting bodies have had to make decisions re women with female sex organs and XX chromosomes? Maybe there are, I can't remember ever seeing any?

DirtyDuchess · 25/08/2022 20:06

Hands Up! Who forgot to close the stair gate?

Firty · 25/08/2022 20:28

Still waiting for the Science Museum to do a display on the menopause.

But perhaps that isn’t scientific enough. Perhaps menopause is just an idea in my head.

Just been out for a meal to celebrate sprog's results, in case anyone thought I'd flounced. Strange times.

An exhibition centred on women could be interesting, have they not done something like this before? Would they have the bottle to put one on now?

Given that it's got no basis in science, I'd argue that it has no place in a science museum in the first place.

Presumably there is no exhibition on how to turn water into wine. Or how to cure leprosy through prayer.

Not if it only referred to actual women.
