Born in the wrong body, packers and binders as clinical interventions etc etc

Perhaps because transgenderism is a scientific human experience and that yes some people have brains more similar to their opposite sex.

A 'scientific human experience'? Do you believe that people are literally 'born in the wrong body'?

And what do you mean by brains being 'more similar' to the opposite sex? A female brain is a brain in a female body and a male brain is a brain in a male body. You can't have a female brain in a male body or vice versa. Or are you just talking about stereotypes?

They are following the science. It exists and it’s real.

Admitting it’s real and the science behind it is what they should be doing. Obviously the discussions about mixed bathrooms, trans people in sport etc is a hotly debated topic, but we shouldn’t not discuss it. :S

Is 'no debate' over now? Good. Let's discuss what transgenderism is. What is it?

IsItShining · 25/08/2022 16:44

Perhaps because transgenderism is a scientific human experience and that yes some people have brains more similar to their opposite sex.

To start to assess that, you first need to know what sex your test subjects are.

That's pretty easily established, because the differences between male and female bodies are usually unmistakable.

The differences between male and female brains, meanwhile, are indistinct and mostly a question of size.

Why ignore the big obvious differences, and focus obsessively on tiny unclear ones?

viques · 25/08/2022 16:53

Meanwhile next door in the Natural History Museum plans are afoot for interactive displays that explain how evolution occurred in a way that satisfies people who believe that God actually did create the world in seven days………..

ArabellaScott · 25/08/2022 16:57

some people have brains more similar to their opposite sex

Well, everything I've read on sexed brains suggests this is a hotly contested area of theory and research, and quite complex. Could you offer your evidence for this assertion, please?

Perhaps because transgenderism is a scientific human experience and that yes some people have brains more similar to their opposite sex. Just like it is accurate that some people are attracted to their own gender. You can’t pretend it’s not a real thing, even if you dislike the politics around how those people are treated.

Oh come on, be fair, we are all up for a discussion but we need to at least start from somewhere that is a recognisable reference point of fact not a fiction dreamt up by woke Twitter users.

gogohmm · 25/08/2022 17:18

However much you don't like it, transgenderism does exist. The numbers seem to be growing hugely of late however there were those who identified as the opposite gender to that which they were born 200 years ago. My Dp's nephew told his parents he was a boy at just 5, 20 years ago long before these discussions were commonplace and the internet was still rudimentary.

Discussion on the science behind transgender people is necessary, perhaps we might start to work out why the increase, the triggers (my theory is childhood trauma purely from personal observation) and how to spot those with true gender dysphoria from troubled teens with mental health issues.

I've personally known two young people who have returned to identifying as their birth sex after years of claiming trans as well as several ftm. Interestingly i don't personally know any mtf.

I will be visiting the sm soon and will report back with first hand information

catandcoffee · 25/08/2022 17:33

Bet the Museum is panicking trying to "sort things out "
Will be watching for the update.

hotdiggetydog · 25/08/2022 17:38

The bile that's spewed towards the trans community here is horrendous. It's like JK Rowling created a million accounts

IcakethereforeIam · 25/08/2022 17:42

Oh, glad you're here, as you seem to know, perhaps you can tell me what JKR said that was transphobic?

Hope your exams results fulfilled your expectations.

if you see any transphobic posts please flag them for MN to remove.

Why is naturally high testosterone in women an "ethical" issue rather than a medical one?

StickywithSuncream · 25/08/2022 17:47

some people have brains more similar to their opposite sex

In what way? I’d appreciate some links to peer reviewed studies and data in scientific journals to understand your viewpoint. Ta.

And I would really like someone to explain to me why, if this is true, there isn't a push to use this data to identify transgender people as part of a diagnosis before giving drugs and surgery.

chillipenguin · 25/08/2022 17:54

Discussion on the science behind transgender people is necessary I'd be interested in that. Is that what this is?

What do people who have a disorder in the sexual development of their body have to do with people who identify with gender stereotypes culturally associated with the opposite sex?

That is your answer to polite questions?

'you are all insane'?

Hmm

I consider it ethical. What is the correct line to draw in professional sport when a woman, who has female sex organs and XX chromosomes has naturally occurring levels of a hormone that provide huge competitive advantages against other women? Because excluding them from competing/ requiring them to take medication and including them in their natural state can all be seen as unfair, but sporting bodies are having to make these decisions. I think it's an interesting moral debate and very topical.

IcakethereforeIam · 25/08/2022 18:10

hotdiggetydog · 25/08/2022 17:44

Yawn

There's no shame in admitting you don't know. You're in good company, nobody else seems to know either.

An exhibition about DSDs would be at least scientific, as long as it wasn't conflated with gender ideology. It could even touch on the ethics of affected individuals in women's sports. Would have to be very sensitively curated.

IsItShining · 25/08/2022 18:11

Is that being done?

The reduction of testosterone so far seems to be an attempt at levelling between female athletes and male athletes -- with XY chromosomes, male musculature and skeletons, but a difference in development of sex organs.

ArabellaScott · 25/08/2022 18:15

Which athletes are you thinking of, Barleysugar?

And how do developmental disorders connect with gender identity?

ArabellaScott · 25/08/2022 18:18

And bearing in mind that intersex people have repeatedly asked that they are not shoved into the 'gender' debate, I am a bit confused why you are bringing that into this thread.
