Louise Perry v the Sexual Revolution

In this episode, [Helen Lewis] meets Louise Perry, author of The Case Against the Sexual Revolution.

The liberalisations of the 1960s brought significant new freedom to women's lives. But Perry argues that this has now combined with the more recent impact of online pornography, which is both ubiquitous and frequently violent. The result, she suggests, has been toxic, particularly for young women.

In a forthright exchange, Perry sets out why she thinks an over-emphasis on the virtues of freedom has stymied feminist thinking on this. And why, from the advice given by women's magazines, through the legal responsibilities of online platforms, to the expectations society places on young men - there now needs to be radical change.

Thanks for the heads up. I caught the end, I am keen the read her book. Just going to listen to the beginning on BBC Sounds now.

nauticant · 19/08/2022 11:39

It's a good listen. As ever Helen Lewis wants the guest to have plenty of leeway but is always ready to pick out things she feels are worthy of being challenged.

Just caught a bit of it in the car. Very interesting, I was agreeing with what she was saying. Am definately going to listen on catch up.

I do think we're still operating in default male mode. I felt this when 'ladettes' became a thing. I remember the old feminist saying 'a woman who wants to be like a man is lacking in ambition'.

“I remember the old feminist saying 'a woman who wants to be like a man is lacking in ambition'.”

That is a very good saying. I find myself in agreement with a lot of what I heard Louise Perry saying. I realised that much of what I thought of as my progressive feminist values basically evaporated or were revealed as a delusion with the birth of my first child. I was painfully aware of my dependency as a new mother and part of the mother-baby dyad. I wasn’t prepared for it, it came as quite a shock.

I'm part way through this book now. It's really good. She does a good job of showing how certain assumptions and biases led to some of the issues we see now culturally. I'm looking forward to the second part of the book where she talks about ways forward.

Worriedpanda50 · 19/08/2022 23:34

I think she and I have very similar mindsets.

WarriorN · 20/08/2022 07:41

I'd be interested to hear this thanks.

The clip I saw of triggernometry made me think yes, I agree with some of this, other parts sound rather trad wife and forgot that lesbians exist.

Other than that, I think that Helen Lewis is A ⭐️. I've been listening to many from
The series.

Tim spectre was a really good listen though I felt that he didn't take any of the research into women's health and supplements into consideration when he says no supplements needed. While I don't think many supplements are necessary there is evidence for some being helpful for menstrual / peri issues. But as with all womens health, not enough research.

The other one that was excellent was the woman who researches authoritarianism.

Appalonia · 20/08/2022 08:36

Her interview on Triggernometry is an hour long and worth a watch too.

Lottapianos · 20/08/2022 08:39

I really enjoyed the Triggernometry interview too. She made some very interesting points

Snog · 20/08/2022 08:48

I listened to this and found it really interesting and for me this was not a point of view I had heard before in the media. I mentioned it to my dd who is 22 and whilst not familiar with Louise she is definitely very familiar with the kind of point she makes and tells me there are a lot of women her age (her included) who are rejecting the idea that women should be more like men in their sexual behaviour and attitudes.

Snog · 20/08/2022 09:59

Thank you Appalonia for the YouTube link

Same!

PomegranateOfPersephone · 20/08/2022 13:14

Thanks Appalonia, I have just finished watching the Triggernometry interview. I don’t disagree with her, off to Blackwells now to look for her book.

What do you mean by "tradwife" in this context?

Yes, I know what a "tradwife" is, I am wondering how you see that as connected to Lousie Perry.
