Dundee man leads fight against period poverty

“It’s about making people aware of the availability of period products for anyone of any gender, whenever they need it.

... '“I was chosen as the best person for the job and for me, it’s irrespective of gender.

“Having a guy can’t be a bad thing – it grabs the headlines, but that’s not the reason I was put into post!” Jason continues.

“For me it’s about driving the discussion from a young age so boys and girls are included and there’s no hiding it away because that keeps it as a taboo topic.

“I want to be seen as a positive male role model.”'

Presumably as his mate had given him his last two jobs, he applied assuming he was a shoe in. That's suspiciously like corruption of nepotism.

Or he was told to apply

Period dignity officers seems like creating busy work when the long and short of it is get period products to women who need them

I can imagine a need to ensure that the scheme is successful and therefore monitored. But I suspect its a busy work job too. When I was at school, the women coming in to talk about periods and products available were employed by the manufacturers. I dont know why that has changed.

Charley50 · 19/08/2022 17:08

I think it's designed to give lucrative contracts to tampon manufacturers, make period public property, and just fuck over women and girls generally, as the Scottish government seems to love doing.

Article about the new law in my local paper today. Says gov are spending £27 million pounds on it.

That's a bloody lot of tampons.

On the period dignity partnership?

It's remit covers a lot more than just giving out free products.

'The leader of Dundee's council, John Alexander, defended the appointment, saying we "don't have male and female jobs". He can tell that to the 800 women who form part of a £20 million equal pay claim against the council, underpaid because they work in job sectors dominated by women.'

Wow that makes my £2 million estimate for the Lead staff look like pocket money! What else are they doing for that £27 million? That surely can't be justified or rather how are they justifying it. I understand there will be administration costs but it will be interesting to see how much is spent on admin and how much on period products.

Well, yeah he can tell it to the equal pay claimants. That there are no male and female jobs. Because the woman dominated roles did not exclude men, nor did the man dominated roles exclude women. The equal pay claim is about how certain roles aren’t eligible for bonus schemes and those roles happen to disproportionately be roles dominated by men. Which obviously should have it’s day in court. But he can honestly say we don’t have male and female jobs, because they don’t, not in the way the protesters want which is to have this job exclude male candidates entirely.

Dina Asher Smith seems to think men have a role to play in UK Athletics addressing periods so I’m not sure why a bloke can’t have this job in Dundee.

Anyone else trying to guess how many more "period dignity officers" are the country will also be male?

I suspect there'll be a few more & currently their employers are in a tailspin trying to work out how long it'll take before MN get wind of Jason #2 & #3 & #4. None of whom will be as 'buzzing' as Jason was to get stuck into the job (after some annual leave ofc).

Men have a role to play as they hold the purse strings when it comes to research funding sadly.

Just noticed this from The Times. Quite amusing take on the situation.

There's an "interesting" thread on Twitter at the moment where the Red Box Project (mission statement "ENSURING NO YOUNG PERSON MISSES OUT ON THEIR EDUCATION BECAUSE THEY HAVE THEIR PERIOD") spends dozens of tweets attacking Maya’s position and finally smears her as "ignorant" and "transphobic".

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/08/2022 07:58

I don't entirely agree with Maya's take on whether period poverty is a separate issue, although I understand why people think it isn't, but what I do agree with is how much of a smokescreen it is for promoting queer theory nonsense and gender identity ideology.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/08/2022 08:00

I think it's designed to give lucrative contracts to tampon manufacturers, make period public property, and just fuck over women and girls generally, as the Scottish government seems to love doing.

And this type of thing, and not just in Scotland. A seemingly female centred feminist initiative to outsiders, but under the surface anything but.

See also the recent focus on the menopause with companies and government agencies even describing it as "a pause in hormones" that can affect virtually anyone, including young FTM and MTF with a supply problem.

How bigots like Red Box manage to retain their charity status is beyond me, maybe an email campaign to the Charity Commission on behalf of Maya us in order?

Dr Louise Newsom :

'we are on a mission to make support with the menopause inclusive and accessible to all women, and trans and non-binary people.'

www.balance-menopause.com/

And this is also Dr Newsom:

www.themenopausecharity.org/

The website used to have the tagline 'make menopause history' - presumably by prescribing enough hormones to stop it happening - but has now changed it to 'own your menopause'.

I can't help but think the whole aim is to push HRT on women:

'10% of women leave their jobs due to menopause

90% of women get menopausal symptoms

Only 12% of women are on HRT in the UK'

Presented as linked statements, suggesting HRT as the logical solution.

It's funny that the entirety of menopause has been ignored for decades and is only now being given attention, so long as that attention includes males or those who identify as males, and involves expensive medications.

I find it funny. (Not ha-ha.)

Discovereads · 22/08/2022 12:15

It's funny that the entirety of menopause has been ignored for decades

Menopause hasn’t been ignored for decades. What’s happened is the discourse surrounding menopause has turned 180degrees every few decades.

Before the current “we must recognise menopause turns some women into suicidal, hormonal shells who cannot function and hold down a job and therefore must medicate the shit out of middle aged women with HRT” narrative,

For decades the narrative was “women are just as capable as men. We are not ruled by our hormones and menopause is no barrier to the employment of middle aged women in demanding senior positions”

And prior to that the narrative was “Middle aged women simply cannot be in senior leadership positions because menopause makes them emotional and illogical, the brain fog makes them poor decision makers, and they are unreliable due to often debilitating physical symptoms keeping them home on sick pay.”

funnelfanjo · 23/08/2022 13:30

I can only speak personally but the current public discussion about menopause gave me the confidence to seek medical advice on whether something could be done about my symptoms. Because up to recently I had been trying to power through appalling brain fog that was indeed impacting my capability at work. I had fully taken on board the message that I should just crack on with it and I was in danger of losing my job.

I credit this to the current cohort of women my age who have been senior and successful enough in their careers to talk about it publicly without ridicule. To be able to say hang on, there’s options and choices out there that everyone needs to know about, including GPs. God bless St Davina and her peers I say. I see no hands of TRAs in this.

Discovereads · 23/08/2022 13:55

I see no hands of TRAs in this.
Exactly. Women have always talked about menopause in society, what’s changed is the development of safe and widely available HRT. We are also in a better position than we were last century such that we can now admit to menopause affecting us and demanding medical help for the debilitating symptoms that affect many women without losing ground on the fight for equality. Last century, the movement for equality was still fairly young and we had to put on a poker face and deny menopause was the huge barrier men made it out to be so that middle aged women could break the glass ceiling and prove themselves to be great senior executives and leaders.
