Government Legal Department leaving Stonewall

Julie Bindel has it on good authority. This is a large department (c. 2,000 staff), and it provides legal advice to other government departments.

It will be good to see that verified because that's a substantial indicator.

achillestoes · 11/08/2022 14:14

Yes, not official yet.

That would be excellent news

WarriorN · 11/08/2022 14:34

BREAKING: Stonewall are so going down. I just heard from a staffer that the GLD ( government legal department) are pulling out of the criminal protection racket that is the Diversity Champions programme, but not yet official. This scam is truly over.

Was her tweet.

It's like dominoes!

CraggyIslandTouristBoard · 11/08/2022 14:37

It’s great that more are quitting the SW protection racket but I wish there would be more honesty about the reasons rather than the width washy “we didn’t feel it offered good value for money” excuse. Maybe GLS will be the first but I’m not holding my breath.

achillestoes · 11/08/2022 14:38

But very likely they’ve been giving incorrect legal advice for years. It’s not surprising they don’t want to hold their hands up.

About time they all got out. Ridiculous any government departments are still associated with the racket.

Theonline · 11/08/2022 15:05

This is good news.

Although I work for a government department that re left Stonewall. Staff were “reassured” that it was entirely about VFM and doing the same work internally LGBTQ+ staff should continue to feel completely safe…

… and therefore that GC women like me should continue to feel unsafe in terms of being able to share our views and concerns, and need to do our jobs advocating for vulnerable groups with the utmost caution never to display our personal views.

whereas the rainbow hair brigade are completely free to share their views because gender ideology so permeates the organisation that their views are not even recognised as views but are seen as neutral.

Theonline · 11/08/2022 15:06

typo re = recently

NitroNine · 11/08/2022 15:22

@Theonline

Doubtless some of it is about the knowledge that the VFM line keeps the RHB on-side. They can’t function if they’re having to deal with staff tantrums; & they know that GC women aren’t going to rock the boat but rather will keep the peace. Essentially they’re relying on good old female socialisation & expecting GC women to be mummy to entire workplaces.

Theonline · 11/08/2022 15:34

I think you’re right @NitroNine

But parenting is not always about keeping the peace of course.

I am a very angry mummy, quietly fuming as I change gender to sex in every equality impact assessment and [other more outing interventions that] ensure we comply with our statutory duties and the civil service code. One of my jobs as a mother is to teach my kids boundaries. I am serious about public service and I am up for whatever fight is needed.

VestofAbsurdity · 11/08/2022 16:37

I don't see how the Government Legal Department could remain associated with and organisation that so blatantly misrepresents the actual fucking law.

RudsyFarmer · 11/08/2022 16:39

The amount of money being spent on this absolute nonsense is going to see it tumble like a house of cards.

dcbc1234 · 11/08/2022 20:24

Why on earth were all these parts of UK Government signed up in the first place though?

Whatsnewpussyhat · 11/08/2022 21:45

But will they then simply outsource their EDI training to another, equally dubious group?

Like the BBC did? tbh, that's my apprehension.

achillestoes · 12/08/2022 08:34

Now confirmed.

Ooh really? Do you have a link?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/08/2022 08:52

Link! Please!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/08/2022 08:56

Thank you!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/08/2022 08:57

Brilliant!

Whatwouldscullydo · 12/08/2022 09:15

What does this mean in reality?

It doesn't appear that ofsted leaving or the DofE guidance made much difference to whata going on in schools. What difference will this make if still many refuse to re write policies according to the law as it stands not SW law. And many just seem.content to do their own thing.

I of course am glad that another source of income is withdrawn. But will they correct anything /review any thing they have done or contine to do what they have done so far with the advice given ?

Yeah, this is what I worry about. My department has left stonewall (but like pp gave a wishy washy value for money argument as the reason why), and ministers are now giving clear direction about sex-based language, etc. But most people I work with see it as a Tory culture war, and the staff networks are holding sessions on how to support staff in a hostile environment 🤦‍♀️

It's progress, definitely, but there's a lot more to do to shift the culture, get a fair hearing for GC views, and challenge the consensus of the networks.

Whatwouldscullydo · 12/08/2022 09:40

I fear its all irrelevant until every school and company is contacted and told once and for all what policies must cover, whatnthe protected characteristic are etc

Otherwise this is the equivalent of trashing a room then walking off hoping someone else clears it up
