They/Them pronouns but gender conforming

Can anyone explain to me why someone would choose (or not choose?) to identify as ‘non binary’ but then outwardly appear to conform to the gender stereotypes of their biological sex? Like, what part of you is non binary if you are a biological woman who dresses in traditionally feminine clothing? Surely in order for this to be ‘a thing’ you have to buy into some nonsense about male and female brains being different? Isn’t this idea inherently sexist? Am I missing something?

Strictly speaking I suppose gender is a shared social contract/understanding/stereotype/belief.

Shared or imposed?

Can it truly be said to be shared if it is imposed on us without our consent?

I don't mean we share the feeling or identity or affiliation with the stereotype. I mean that we (within society) share a common awareness/understanding of what the respective sex stereotypes are. Of what the expectations are of how women/men will behave/look/feel.

Of course many people ignore, rebel or play with this expectation/imposition/contract. I suppose some few people will not be aware of stereotypes, but it's a pretty pervasive social trope.

"I am sexually available"

you think there is women's clothing that says this! Jesus Christ. I should probably report your post you rape apologist.

Gender is all about one’s inner life. Might as well ask what is the difference between a Jewish woman and a Christian woman?

I wouldn’t even know. They don’t lecture me about their religion, and I don’t have to care what they believe. Sounds great. Perhaps genderists could behave the same way.

Yes but feminists have been fighting for centuries for women NOT to be defined by those stereotypes.

And now we are being told that mainstream feminism believes trans women are women?

You really couldn't make this shit up.

In the 1950s gender roles were clearly defined. I can completely understand men and women wanting to break out from this. Part of this was transwomen, secretly dressing as women and finding a release from the pressure's of societies expectations. From 1960s onwards, gender roles have started breaking down. Being trans is no longer seen as being subversive. The problem is that in a world where everyone is an individual, some people want the extra attention and want to appear radical, stand out from the crowd, feel like they're an under dog and part of some battle for acceptance. I also like the idea of being non-binary in the sense that it shouldn't matter what your sex is, whether you are treated with respect. However I would rather fight to be treated with respect as a woman than say, it's ok, I don't identity as a woman so you can treat me as an equal.

Wow, really Mumsnet?

Is it OK to say I find the concept of identifying as non binary offensive because it implies that everyone else conforms to gendered stereotypes and you alone do not?
