What about women who are post menopausal?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 12/07/2022 19:18

Wow! That's a little pen portrait of the script that shuts down via intimidation, humiliation and threats any challenge to an ideology.

She''s so smug and self satisfied while parroting absolute nonsense. The poor kids in her school subject to that.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 12/07/2022 19:18

Some women have the capacity for pregnancy, some women do not, that's never been in question. Men do not however have the capacity for pregnancy, and if you watch clip you'll see that having the audacity to say that means you're a transphobe who promotes violence

So, 'Women with the capacity for pregnancy' would be better wording then.

JellySaurus · 12/07/2022 19:26

Wow, with that anti-freedom of speech attitude she's hardly an advocate for pro-choice.

HipTightOnions · 12/07/2022 19:26

I am post-menopausal. I would be perfectly capable of realising that a reference to "women" in the context of pregnancy does not apply to me.

What's more, I wouldn't consider any violence to have been perpetrated against me.

valadon68 · 12/07/2022 19:28

You can be a trans man and still a woman, if 'woman' is understood to refer to sex (whether in the particular context or just generally). So we can talk about pregnancy exclusively affecting women without offending anyone.

myuterusistryingtokillme · 12/07/2022 19:33

My uterus is broken so clearly doesn't mean me then!

WolverineBluey · 12/07/2022 21:18

Dear God, make it STOP. There are people on Twitter actually cheering this woman on as if she's doing something intelligent. It is painful. It's dishonest, disingenuous, and it is clearly conning many.

Imnobody4 · 12/07/2022 21:55

I can't believe the state of academia- she's a Professor. I can't take any more of this warped nonsense.

Motorina · 12/07/2022 21:56

Wow. That is an amazing bit of DARVO, right there.

I think, from context, the phrase she's looking for is 'pregnant women'.

JacquelinePot · 12/07/2022 22:07

Good lord! 😳

SeaRabbit · 12/07/2022 22:49

The poor kids in her school subject to that.

She is a professor at Berkeley. Supposedly a university sort of place...

Apologies for the bizarre formatting^

turbonerd · 12/07/2022 23:16

My uterus is also broken. It has had the capacity to bring forth children, but no more. I am not menopausal though.
I still find that I am a woman though.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 12/07/2022 23:22

Huh... just realised that when I had my last baby I had my tubes removed, so... I don't have the capacity for pregnancy any longer.

I never knew I was no longer a woman. You learn something new every day!

When are these fools going to realise what a gift they are to the right?

Totally agree. It's mind-blowing.

This. this this this in the US where I live. They really don't seem to understand what they are handing to the conservative shites who want to ban abortion, gay marriage, contraception etc. But maybe they do and are ok with it? I don't know. I'm baffled with all this tbh. The dialogue about abortion affecting "pregnant people/folks" was unreal.

I can't have children anymore - am I a woman?
My mother (adoptive) could not have children - was she a woman?

caringcarer · 13/07/2022 00:52

More utter nonsense. In future people will look back in history and ridicule our generation as the stupid ones.

Doona · 13/07/2022 01:00

Hawley was being combative and disingenuous. People with the capacity for pregnancy is an awkward phrase, yes, but possibly more accurate than women in the current circumstances. Maybe such accuracy is necessary in a legal setting. Yes, she didn't handle it well politically, perhaps, but she's not a PR person or a politician. She's a legal professor. I feel sad that here on a feminist website people are cheering on the powerful, sneering man who set her up.

giroux · 13/07/2022 01:01

@Pallisers
this. I live in the US too and can’t believe the left are handing things over to the right like this.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 13/07/2022 01:15

Trans men can get pregnant too.
You may not want to acknowledge them, say they're still women, that's why they can get pregnant but the thing is they are legally recognized as men and can still get pregnant.
They have a duty of care too.
It takes nothing away from me to recognise this. I can still get health care for my needs too.
People seem to be (on purpose, who knows?) misreading what it actually means.

Name1232 · 13/07/2022 01:21

I would interpret that as people deemed to have mental capacity to either become or cause a pregnancy... That type of obscure description makes clear communication impossible.

Phrenologistsfinger · 13/07/2022 01:24

Where does this leave us unfertiles, with barren wombs? Or those who have had a hysterectomy?

The discussion was about abortion rights.
