Et tu Rage Against the Machine
OP posts:
KittenKong · 12/07/2022 10:02

I hate to break it to them - they are the machine now.

Natsku · 12/07/2022 10:08

Well that's bloody disappointing

Musomama1 · 12/07/2022 10:52

CoffeeWithCheese · 12/07/2022 09:49

Slightly miffed against the machine? Mildly irked against the machine?

I am, however loving birth-giverfuckaaaaaa

Brilliant 🤣🤣🤣

IvyTwines · 12/07/2022 10:54

First, I was surprised to hear they were still around as a band, and surely most of the original fanbase are too middle-aged, mature and sensible for this nonsense, or are middle-aged Americans lapping up the misogynistic Newspeak too?

Ohnohedident · 12/07/2022 11:19

'Birth-givers' 🤓

This is satire surely?

Negotiating With The Machine To Save Ourselves

sharonam · 12/07/2022 14:11

haha! That’s about it

legaltigger · 12/07/2022 14:42

Fucks sake.

Slothtoes · 12/07/2022 20:41

I can’t play anything or sing but you can all join my new band, Vag against the Machine

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/07/2022 21:35

Tutting at the machine, but carrying out the actions in its 5 point memo

I can really badly play a few chords on ukulele or guitar and it turns out primary school recorder skills are sort of transferable to a tin whistle, so there's that 👍

daisyjgrey · 12/07/2022 22:16

CDs are going to the charity shop.

That'll show 'em. 🙄

GoodJanetBadJanet · 13/07/2022 00:51

CDs are going to the charity shop.
I don't get this attitude.
Same with the poster upthread saying they're putting their CD in the bin.
Isn't that exactly the same attitude people on here scoff at and ridicule anyone who is trans not feeling able to read JK Rowling anymore?!

GoodJanetBadJanet · 13/07/2022 00:53

Just for clarity I'm a big Harry Potter fan - just because I disagree with her on this issue, doesn't mean I still can't enjoy HP.
I can manage to separate the artist from the art.

I can hum a bit, and sometimes play all the right notes, just not necessarily in the right order….

@GoodJanetBadJanet careful, if you're not calling people "conformist woke fuckers" every five minutes you'll be hung drawn and quartered before the sun goes down.

Waitwhat23 · 13/07/2022 21:54

Like this you mean? The concerted effort to separate the creator from her own creation - news.sky.com/story/the-pr-attempt-to-separate-jk-rowling-from-harry-potter-and-why-its-important-12640707

I couldn't care less whether you or anyone else chooses/chooses not to read Harry Potter anymore. The same way as I'm not particularly bothered if other posters on here are chucking their cd's in the bin or listening to them on repeat. It's not quite what's happening to JKR though, is it?

And as a pp said, here's JRK's essay. Not a 'interpretation' of it. Not a YouTube video. Her actual words. It's always interesting to find out what she actually said is deemed 'transphobic'. www.jkrowling.com/opinions/j-k-rowling-writes-about-her-reasons-for-speaking-out-on-sex-and-gender-issues/

It's strangely opposite to the lyrics of RATM - 'fuck you, I won't do what you tell me'. It's quite astonishing how many people who declare themselves against what JKR wrote haven't actually read the essay. Their dismissal of it centres around what someone else has told them to think. Less 'fuck you I won't do what you tell me' and more 'please tell me how to think'.

Kind of the point of the thread, really.

WhereAreWeNow · 13/07/2022 21:55

I thought it was a piss take.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 14/07/2022 00:32

"Like this you mean? The concerted effort to separate the creator from her own creation*
No, not like that.
As I said in my post, I still enjoy her books. As writing, whether it's books, songs, plays, just like I still love Father Ted.
As people are entitled to their beliefs and it shouldn't affect their written work.
I've never said otherwise.
Was just pointing out have seen people on here scoffing at trans people for saying they can't bear to read HP anymore but now we have people who can't bear to listen to people who have come out in support of trans people and mentioned bins and charity shops after previously liking their music.
Exact. Same. Behaviour.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 14/07/2022 00:33

Also don't know why you're linking to her essay and assuming I haven't read it because I have.

is it the exact. Same. People?

cos if not its not really a point…in my opinion obviously

there are some people who will stop watching, reading and listening to stuff for various reasons connected to the originator, and some who won’t

Waitwhat23 · 14/07/2022 08:08

Exact. Same. Behaviour.

I expect the posters on here who are talking about chucking CD's away might not buy future CD's. They might have a wee moan on this platform. They might write to the band to express their disappointment that a band called 'Rage Against the Machine' are doing exactly what the 'machine' is telling them. (Even the most 'language must be inclusive' person must have some sort of glimmer of misgivings at referring to a woman who is seeking an abortion and so is explicitly not wishing to give birth as a 'birth-giver').

What I suspect they won't do is - burn the cd's or bring out music in the style of RATM, while insisting that that's the real music, that fans now own the music and that RATM is now obsolete.

Waitwhat23 · 14/07/2022 08:13

They probably won't buy knock off merchandise from people making money from a creation while damning It's creator.

They probably won't have tattoos lasered off in a fit of pique.

They probably won't insist that websites who mention RATM, even in passing, have a disclaimer that they support communities who use the word woman (Buzzfeed being one such example).

Not.really.the.same.

(My own disclosure- I find the whole this.is.my.point thing quite cringy but am using it as satire here).
