'British Triathlon to introduce open category for men and trans women'

www.skysports.com/share/12646815

I think this is inclusion.

Perfect. A truly inclusive solution.

FunnyTalks · 06/07/2022 12:37

That's fantastic! I hope this marks the start of men welcoming all males into their spaces and categories. And perhaps the end of gender non conforming youth being pushed to claim they are the opposite sex and need medicating.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 06/07/2022 12:42

More good news for women!

achillestoes · 06/07/2022 12:42

This is very good.

Snugglepumpkin · 06/07/2022 12:48

Really happy to see someone finally sticking up for biological women & coming up with a genuinely fair solution so that everyone can take part in sport.

Signalbox · 06/07/2022 12:50

It’s a day for good news. Brilliant decision.

Clymene · 06/07/2022 12:53

More good news!

Fenlandia · 06/07/2022 12:55

80% of their members support this

ZaraSizeMedium · 06/07/2022 12:55

This is good news.

As I understand it there are still just 2 categories… they’ve basically rebranded the mens category and are now calling it “men, transwomen and non binary”, is that right?

CampervanKween · 06/07/2022 12:55

Such a great day. I have to say Terf Island has been incredibly influential and leading the way in this fight. Terribly proud of our little Island today.

123Callie · 06/07/2022 12:57

An open category is a perfect example of inclusion. Nobody needs to compete in a category with a label they don’t like, and female sport is maintained for biological females.

RoseslnTheHospital · 06/07/2022 12:57

Happy to see some common sense and a National Governing Body not being afraid of activist backlash for once.

SallyLockheart · 06/07/2022 12:57

Great news.

seemsikeaniceday · 06/07/2022 13:03

Excellent. Let’s hope it is reported fairly as British Cycling has clarified its inclusive eligibility criteria for women and open categories.

lifeturnsonadime · 06/07/2022 13:08

This is excellent news, I"m just reading the Forstarter judgement, this is the icing on the cake.

Well done British Triathalon!

SallyLockheart · 06/07/2022 13:17

They have stated it is legally robust decision and applies to all competitions from age 12 upwards

HandShoe · 06/07/2022 13:18

At last some sensible news

ScribblingPixie · 06/07/2022 13:19

I'm only concerned that 20 per cent didn't agree. But perhaps some wanted male, female and a third category? I am delighted that it applies to grass roots - so important that taking part in sport feels fair right from the start.

Still transphobic apparently 🤷‍♂️

DrDetriment · 06/07/2022 13:23

Great news. Nobody is being excluded and trans people are very welcome. They just need to compete in the appropriate sex category. I'm assuming trans men will have to also go in the open category if they have had any hormone treatment.

theDudesmummy · 06/07/2022 13:23

This is excellent news

JuneJustRains · 06/07/2022 13:24

Can (unmedicated) transmen still take part in the Women's category, I wonder?

I too assume that those on testosterone would take part in the Open.

Faffertea · 06/07/2022 13:30

Excellent news.

And when the TRAs start (as they already have done) saying this is transphobic everyone will see this has never been about fairness but about validation. sunlight everywhere.

Manderleyagain · 06/07/2022 13:34

The old policy is still up. The new one takes over in January. Its interesting to compare. The old one came out when I was first reading here and looking in to the issue. There is a long list of approved organisations (usual suspects) and lots of definitions to fully enforce the new belief system. Its like these policies were viewed as a way of proselytising and embedding the beliefs rather than being useful to clubs. The new one is much more practical and shorter.

In the new one, as far as I can tell, you have to be born female to compete in women's. But there seems to be no restriction on open, though you do have to get a male professional licence of you are at that level.

It is forcall levels of competition but not 'recreational activity'.

The consultation process is also worth a read. I wonder who the consultant was.

Fluffymule · 06/07/2022 14:12

More good news.

I hope that this is part of a rapid worldwide domino movement now by sporting governing bodies, that will see them all take courage from other sports doing the same. Strength in numbers, confidence in legal position, mandatory direction from their insurers and so on.

Once a few more stand up and do the right thing it will become untenable for others not to - women athletes, in sports who do not protect the sex classification, will more easily and rightfully challenge why they are not afforded the same fairness, safety and dignities of athletes in other sports.
