'British Triathlon to introduce open category for men and trans women'

I think this is inclusion.

I'm assuming so, but I've not gone into it in detail. But transmen not on testosterone could in theory compete in women's or open?

As transmen are born female, then if not on T they should be eligible to compete in the women’s category?

334bu · 06/07/2022 21:34

Not just in theory, most transmen and non binary female athletes continue to compete in female competitions up to and including World and Olympic levels. They refrain from taking testosterone so they can continue to compete here, as this is the only category where they will have any success because they have female bodies. Provably they will continue to compete in the female category as in the open they will have to compete against men.

TheBiologyStupid · 06/07/2022 21:34

Brilliant - and the new policy applies to both the grassroots and elite levels, too.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 06/07/2022 21:40

Perfect.

Cailleach1 · 06/07/2022 21:41

I think it would be incredible if they allowed some competitors to take Testosterone, an anabolic steroid. To dope with a performance enhancing drug.

Not that I'm worried about the men's sport. It still won't be a threat to them in the same way males (however they identify) in women's sport is.

Transmen using testosterone would have to obtain a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) certificate and compete in the Open category.

morescrummythanyummy · 06/07/2022 22:02

I'd say it would be rather great for trans men on T to be able to take it (up to male limits) in the Open category under a TUE. Save for the odd amateur races, a trans man wouldn't beat a man of a similar level of natural ability and would be extremely unlikely ever to prevail at elite level. The East German women certainly never managed it. Helps to prove that a woman is not just a man without testosterone.

Drivebye · 06/07/2022 22:11

Each sport that does this makes it easier for the next. This is now becoming, at last, the norm. Let's face it, sport should never have allowed Transwomen to compete in womens sport as a default.

Anyway, of course the TRAs don't like this, it confirms what everyone knows and that is that transwomen are transwomen, biological males, they are not women.

It’s not incredible at all. Transmen can already get a TUE for T to allow them to compete in male categories.

*Although that document refers to transmen as “transgender male athletes”.

"It doesn't make me feel included by being excluded from the female category."

Doesn't even realise that he is admitting it isn't about 'inclusion' it is about accessing female spaces.

I keep saying it, inclusion = your boundaries are there for me to break.

Peregrina · 07/07/2022 00:35

And that some biological men have now been deprived of a way of cheating by self identifying as women.

Hapoydayz · 07/07/2022 00:39

Fantastic news

Women's rights = quaint notion that was never intended to be accepted as more than a polite social fiction and could be withdrawn at any time when they were inconvenient to a member of the oppressor class.

caringcarer · 07/07/2022 01:46

This will mean woman's sport will continue to thrive.

PermanentTemporary · 07/07/2022 07:42

Fantastic. I hope this approach becomes the norm.

EdinburghFeminist · 06/07/2022 14:55

TRAs still not happy

I think they'll have to learn to cope as I think other sports will adopt this approach.

Well done British Triathlon - no elite level only policy so women at all levels can have fair, safe sport (oh and no-one can complete in the wrong sex category up to a certain level then do Daily Mail sad face articles about how they are being forced out). No transition before puberty clause that could be used to try and justify pushing blockers on to kids (although we know that anyone medicated out of experiencing puberty is not going to be troubling medal podiums). No 'othering' third category just a simple, clear policy that women's sport is for women.

BritishTriathlon claim to be "truly inclusive" & "triathlon is a sport for everyone". So why are you making trans women compete with men? It doesn't make me feel included by being excluded from the female category. I wouldn't compete in any sport with such transphobic beleifs.

So transwomen shouldn't be made to compete with men but actual biological women should be? 🙄 Male sporting advantage is real and however hard someone choses not to identify as male it won't identify away that advantage. Georgia Taylor-Brown couldn't identify out of her flat tyre in the Olympics, Jonny Brownlee can't identify out of his broken elbow and I can't identify out of the fact that I'm a really crap swimmer, a poor cyclist and no great shakes at running.

Well said.

All athletes can compete at all levels in the relevant class.

More good news.

I hope that this is part of a rapid worldwide domino movement now by sporting governing bodies, that will see them all take courage from other sports doing the same. Strength in numbers, confidence in legal position, mandatory direction from their insurers and so on.

Once a few more stand up and do the right thing it will become untenable for others not to - women athletes, in sports who do not protect the sex classification, will more easily and rightfully challenge why they are not afforded the same fairness, safety and dignities of athletes in other sports.

I agree with this. Fear is the motivation for so many decisions and attitudes the other way, so I predict that now some sports have done this they all will
