Are these school resources ok?

I've just been to a school tour for my child moving up to yr7 next year. This is the 3rd school we've visited but the first that had such a strong pro LGBT message throughout the school. Literally every door or wall had at least one poster. But I'm concerned about some of the materials on display. I'll add some pictures, hopefully those wiser than me can tell me if they are compliant with current DfE guidance. I've already had to have our primary school change materials to comply.

Specifically in the first picture: is the Gender Unicorn OK? I really don't like it.

And the books, are they fact-based or full of gender woo?

Ah, you can't see the unicorn very well, I'll try again.

And the 'gender neutral' toilets were most definitely not compliant. This is my child's 2nd choice school so I'm feeling really disappointed right now.

There’s obviously someone working there with a deep interest in gender ideology. I wouldn’t send my kid there.

Whatthechicken · 30/06/2022 19:23

And this is the stuff they are happy to show you…it would be a no from me. Especially for a girl…I can’t imagine having to deal with a period in non-compliant gender neutral toilets. They are just too vulnerable at this age. I’m guessing you feel the same to have posted this.

Clymene · 30/06/2022 19:25

Nope, not fact based. And not just gender woo but actively homophobic. Juno Dawson said that a lot of gay men were gay as a consolation prize because they can't be women.

Alex Bertie had unfettered internet access from a young age and has made a career out of transitioning.

And you might want to read this article from a gay teacher who set up an lgbt club at his school: www.transgendertrend.com/school-lgbt-club/

Tldr - I would not send my child to this school

cariadlet · 30/06/2022 19:30

I hadn't heard of the gender unicorn but it says "sex assigned at birth" which is a big no no.

It might be worth asking schools if they are following the DFE Feb 2022 updated guidance for teaching RSE.

Jackiebrambles · 30/06/2022 19:36

Oh no, not the gender unicorn - that's a big no no. I'm dreading my kids moving up to secondary.

NoSquirrels · 30/06/2022 19:37

Juno Dawson was a secondary teacher before being an author, and writes well and understands teen issues, but obviously it’s a book with an agenda by a trans author so I wouldn’t be particularly enthusiastic that my DC was reading it. On the other hand I very strongly believe in freedom in reading choice by secondary, and that discussion of ideas is the way to keep kids open minded, not just swallowing the prevailing fashions wholesale, so I wouldn’t be overly worried by either book. All trans authors make a living out of being trans in some way, as far as I can see.

I think you need to remember it’s Pride month, so library displays etc are likely to be pretty LGBTQ+ focused right now. It might not be representative of the school in other months.

NoSquirrels · 30/06/2022 19:39

I don’t have a massive issue with the gender unicorn. I’m not keen on the sex assigned at birth and Intersex/Other thing but it’s not as terrible as the jelly baby one.

Clymene · 30/06/2022 19:45

Juno Dawson's most recent book features a porn addled transgender girl at a girls boarding school.

Those displays look rather familiar to me. Was there a book from a series supposedly celebrating famous or highly achieving women, but featuring RuPaul on the reception desk? If so,I know the school and can tell you all about it.

I didn't see that so not sure. It's pretty much nailed on that this is the 2nd choice school so fingers crossed I don't need it but I don't have other options really.

Dawson might be a good writer (I don’t know) but the content isn’t suitable for teenagers.

respectmysex · 30/06/2022 20:37

This is the other display: Queer Icons. I'm not ok with the way they appropriate historical figures and describe them as queer, Florence Nightingale here but often Joan of Arc gets co opted in as queer as well.

And a pic of the organisations they refer kids to for support.

Was this the one with drugs references too?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 30/06/2022 20:41

I'd probably ask the school how they celebrated International Women's Day and what campaigns they've implemented / resourced in relation to in relation girls, BAME students, SEN, disability, VAWG et?
I'd also be somewhat concerned that they must have an issue with LGBT bullying if they need to devote so many resources to it?

NoSquirrels · 30/06/2022 20:41

Yeah, those organisations are obviously full on gender affirmative- Stonewall, Gendered Intelligence. And I’m not sure why Shakespeare or Florence Nightingale are queer…

jeaux90 · 30/06/2022 20:42

There's a link in another thread to a hearing today in Parliament about these resources in school and how they teach RSE. I suggest you listen to Miriam's opening speech OP.

PearlClutch · 30/06/2022 20:43

Ah, worse than I remembered. Yes, drugs, but also gang rape presented as titillating.

'Books that use phrases like “let them use your body and get fucked both ends like a little piggy,” and “You’re a fucking cum slut. Worthless tranny whore” should not be recommended to children'

And here are the toilets. Gaps at top and bottom are not massive but certainly big enough to poke a phone through.

IIRC - Joan of arc was claimed to be Queer/GNC/trans because of the gender specific clothes she wore. But it is often said that she wore ‘male clothes’ because it reduced the risk that she would be raped by male guards. That’s this whole argument in a nutshell pretty much to me - stereotypes and male dominance/privilege.

Whatthechicken · 30/06/2022 20:53

oh and the fact that ‘male clothes’ were probably just much more practical for her quest.

Clymene · 30/06/2022 21:04

A secondary school with no sanitary disposal units in the toilets?? And mixed toilets???

Extra hard no.

FFS what are the girls in that school supposed to do? Come out of the loo with a little package of period shame wrapped in loo paper.

This is just so grim for girls.
