OP posts:
SmileyPiuPiu · 28/06/2022 20:30

I don't know anyone who calls them feminine anyway?

achillestoes · 28/06/2022 20:32

I don’t think I’ve ever said “feminine” for these items.

ShowOfHands · 28/06/2022 20:35

Feminine hygiene products is supermarket speak.

Feminine hygiene products is supermarket speak.

Oh! I have never really noticed that before. Maybe vagina products is better?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/06/2022 20:39

Period products are for any menstruating female - women, girls, and those who consider themselves as 'nonbinary' or transmen. Straight women and lesbians. It's a need based on sex, nothing to do with being 'feminine' - that's a gender description.

So yes, do stop saying 'feminine' when talking about periods. And certainly ditch 'feminine hygiene'.

SmileyPiuPiu · 28/06/2022 20:41

Period products is fine. But what about the incontinence pants etc.

What about them? Male and female fit would be fine I'd have thought, though last time I noticed a Tena display it looked like it was 'default' and mens.... wow, a product for which women are the default human.Hmm

WooFighters · 28/06/2022 20:49

Perhaps supermarkets need to just go the whole hog and scrawl here be monsters on the aisles?

the incontinence pads and pants to fit women are with the twee "feminine hygiene" products usually? Are the mens with them? They could just call them FLUID ABSORBERS

The only people I've ever heard use the phrase are men too embarrassed to say anything more descriptive - they'd never manage to say 'Period Products' because it would mean saying the word Period.

Everybody I know/work with (there are over a thousand of the latter, so it's hardly a small sample) who actually uses them would say 'pads' or 'Tampax'.

HTH.

Findwen · 28/06/2022 21:57

There are honest companies, take Hortons example:

IcakethereforeIam · 28/06/2022 22:02

This is the full post:

"graceandgreen
Pride month is coming to an end, but we will never stop celebrating LGBTQIA+. Here's a reminder that periods have no gender and need no gender. It's about time to stop saying 'feminine', 'female', or addressing cis women only / or referring to any gender when speaking of menstruation/periods."

So, you're not being asked. Grace and Green are iessentially ordering you to stop using sexed language when talking about periods. Ideas on what we're supposed to say?

I'd never heard of this company. I think they make mooncups? Why does this keep happening? Asking, nicely, for more inclusive language is one thing, but rudely demanding compliance?

titchy · 28/06/2022 22:07

Fanny flannels?

SmileyPiuPiu · 28/06/2022 22:08

That does seem a bit demanding and not very educational

titchy · 28/06/2022 22:10

Or, and this will be controversial - female hygiene products.

Actually maybe not controversial, no reference to gender, recognises nb and tm can also be female so inclusive.

Wheelibinsoutinthemorning · 28/06/2022 22:10

Aldi would agree.

IcakethereforeIam · 28/06/2022 22:13

I thought 'muff stuffer' but that's female body terminology again. Dammit, must try harder. Even 'front hole stop', draws attention to women's anatomy.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/06/2022 22:16

Here's a reminder that periods have no gender and need no gender. It's about time to stop saying 'feminine', 'female', ...
Right that periods have no gender so stop the 'feminine'.
But they're pretending that 'female ' also means gender when of course it means sex. And periods have a sex.

We're not going to stop saying female. And we're not going to pretend it means 'gender'.

RoseslnTheHospital · 28/06/2022 22:17

Stop saying female? This is just madness. Female is an accurate descriptor of those who have periods. It's fuck all to do with identity, it's about your biology.

Well...and to ignorant mistakes in describing it. Would be a really serious mistake to stuff your front hole rather than your middle one.

HoobleDooble · 28/06/2022 22:22

They used to be delightfully referred to as jam rags when I was as school. Could just imagine that on an aisle label in Tesco.

IcakethereforeIam · 28/06/2022 22:25

Wasn't it a German academic article that used 'front hole', and something about short and long urethras? There was a thread...

It's all so stupid.

Hoardasurass · 28/06/2022 22:25

@Findwen loved that

Thebeastofsleep · 28/06/2022 22:28

I've always hated the term "feminine hygiene products" makes my teeth itch. I'm not particularly femine, though I am female and it's cringinly euphenistic. So I'm happy about it.

Continence products should be called continence products or continence care. They are in our Sainsbury's.
