TRAs on Twitter have entered their ‘how can you even care about being called “womb carriers” after the repeal of Roe” phase.

Yep, the whole 'being called womb carrier is not the point here, just suck it up and concentrate on the real issues while we refer to you in ever increasingly dehumanising ways' narrative.

ScreamingMeMe · 25/06/2022 10:56

TRAs using this as an chance to have a dig are just showing the world how little they actually care about it. Thanks for showing us who you are, though.

Interesting piece from Sarah Ditum.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to agitate for change in the law in England, Scotland and Wales. We have what amounts to easy access to abortion for anyone who needs it. A push to further decriminalise or increase the time limit to full term would face conservative backlash.

BootsAndRoots · 25/06/2022 10:56

Does anyone know why at the protests there are a lot of gay pride flags? Is it now just the flag to bring to whatever protest?

achillestoes · 25/06/2022 10:57

Yeah, we’re not doing that.

achillestoes · 25/06/2022 10:59

And they’re trying to use black women as their shield and sword again. That must feel very old hat by now.

No idea if this is the reason but purely at a guess

Maybe some are protesting not just about abortion but also the precedent this sets, it would be completely unsurprising if they come for LGB rights next, as some of them have already spoken of doing.

Patients were in the lobby, waiting, the moment it became a post-Roe America.

The staff at Alamo Women’s Reproductive Services Clinic in San Antonio had just received a call from their attorney: Abortion procedures in Texas would have to stop immediately. The dozen or so patients in the lobby Friday morning would have to be turned away. The clinic staff would have to be the ones to tell them.

Andrea Gallegos, the clinic’s administrator, and the rest of the staff walked out and addressed the room: “The Supreme Court made this decision today and, unfortunately, your geographical location affects your bodily autonomy,” she said they told waiting patients.

Texas also has a “trigger” law that would ban abortions from the moment of conception and would go into effect as soon as about two months from now. But in the chaos of Friday’s Supreme Court ruling, clinics across the state chose to cease all abortion services in the case that the ban would come into effect even sooner. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Friday that, under a separate pre-Roe ban in the state, “abortion providers could be criminally liable for providing abortions starting today.”

I fear you may be right @achillestoes

In an ideal world I would like to see the end for need for 2 doctors to sign off on medical abortions in the first 10 weeks and for women to be able to get the pills from GPs so that they don’t have to sort childcare and travel however far it is to the nearest hospital, and find a companion to travel with them but can easily take the pills at home in those first 10 weeks.

However it is probably better not to rock the boat at this fragile time and risk losing what we already have which is better than most it seems.

ScreamingMeMe · 25/06/2022 11:07

Has this been posted yet? Interesting thread fro. Someone who has been researching abortion history.

I think just because June is Pride month.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 25/06/2022 11:10

"Like, just fuck off. We are well aware how much men hate us thank you very much. You know fuck all about abortion, it doesn't affect you, it will never affect you, it's just a handy tool for you to beat women with even more. Stay in your lane and sit the fuck down"

@ThickCutSteakChips Well said Flowers

PomegranateOfPersephone · 25/06/2022 11:16

This stood out for me from the Twitter thread shared by ScreamingMeMe

I think the effort to replace biological sex with gender made the advocates for Roe/Casey incompetent to argue for women’s rights. Men are not women and the difference matters on a lot of levels. The left & Biden marched forward with a brief that ignored women and their history.

I believe that most of the members of Congress in BOTH parties understand why abortion should be legal. I suspect most of them have no strong desire to prevent abortion, they simply didn’t want to deal with it. And if I’m right, that’s perhaps even more despicable than those that just don’t get it.

Thanks for your posts. I'm a bit confused about why pro choice Republicans have refused to deal with this issue. Logically the Christian fundamentalists are unlikely to vote Democrat even if the Republicans had protected abortion rights and they might have attracted Democrat votes by making that decision. Do you think this is because the majority of Republicans actually oppose abortion, are worried about losing donations or women's reproductive rights are just not important enough for them to think it's worth facing criticism?

PomegranateOfPersephone · 25/06/2022 11:19

And this

*Again, I believe the approach of advocates was male-centered — focused on males in the lgbtq movement, not women. Under it women can only make arguments that upperclass, white, oppressed males think vindicate rights they want. If it helps women great; if not, too bad.

This is a problem across the board in academic work and beyond.
The voices of women who insist on arguments that view women as a sex and recognize biology are suppressed because they don’t aid minority males.*

I think just because June is Pride month.

Also because of what Justice Thomas wrote. But there are always some pride flags at any women’s protest.

So many well-expressed ideas. This is a killer of an ending because it does all come down to this.

America’s women will have to relearn how to name themselves before they can save themselves.

If they vary from the party line on this issue, the party will support a new candidate for their office in the next primary. It’s not just the opposing party that these politicians have to contend with, it is their own party.

No one can effectively run for office on a D or an R ticket without gaining the support of the party. They will bury you. So you’ll have no support from the opposing party, and your own party also refusing any support. People look askance at someone the party won’t support. Getting elected to office takes a massive effort and loads of fundraising. The parties supply resources to make this happen.

The American political system is so broken. And yes, the constitution is out of date and no long fully suited for purpose. But worshipped as much as the bible.

This is terrible. It reminds me of the scene in the Handmaid's Tale where all the women's bank accounts are taken away and they are sent home from work, never to return.

So,so sad.

unname · 25/06/2022 12:00

Also, many in America have been telling men for 5 decades that abortion is none of their business. Many don’t want to talk about it or think about it.

Abortion never factored into the voting decisions of many on the right because they simply did not believe it would ever be touched by the Supreme Court, despite the vulnerability.

I think the left has the same problems, but with different issues. We’ve all gotten into bed with people who have some views we cannot abide, but just hope we can keep in check or completely ignore. The two party system was bound to cause this.

unname · 25/06/2022 12:21

Really appreciate the intelligent dialogue here. Not many people I can talk to about it in such depth. Everything is so polarized around me here in the US and it’s hard to talk even to people whose views probably match my own.

LemonSwan · 25/06/2022 12:52

I just can’t understand how people are so stupid. It surprises me every time.

MalagaNights · 25/06/2022 13:13

I'm depressed by the responses to this decision as it feels like the only option now is a war between 2 extreme sides.

I don't want abortion banned.
I don't want free access to abortion up to full term.

I don't think a women's right to choose is the only ethical question.
I don't think life from conception is the only ethical question.

I don't think people who oppose abortion hate women.
I don't think women who have abortions are evil murderers.

I think it's complex and we have to find a way to agree across society how we balance the differing ethical issues and where we agree to draw the lines.

But it feels so far from this, it's so divisive and tribal and being used on both sides to stoke hate.

I honestly don't think either the republican or democrat position is what most people want.
Most people want abortion with some limits.

But the political parties are not offering that. This is a failure of the politicians. They are deliberately stoking hate and people are falling for it.

It's very very depressing.

LemonSwan · 25/06/2022 13:41

Malaga I understand you think this is complex but it’s really not.

No one in their right mind carries a pregnancy to term and then aborts. They still have to deliver at that stage. It just doesn’t happen.

Before having my first I always saw this from a freedom point of view. Women’s choice and autonomy. Now I see it from a different view. Pregnancy is incredibly dangerous.

I just had a c section. I have been told if I have another pregnancy within two years the chances of my uterus rupturing are much higher. I would probably die, my unborn child would definitely die.

I want to give my so another sibling greatly, but if an accident happens in the next two years I will not risk my son growing up without a mother, and I will not carry a pregnancy to term and risk my unborn child’s life.

It’s black and white in my eyes. Abortion should be legal for a myriad of reasons.

Slothtoes · 25/06/2022 13:47

Agreed. It’s not complex at all. Either you think women and girls have the right to decide for themselves if and whether to become mothers. Or you don’t.
