Really deep, philosophical question: Does coloured hair signify you're a TRA?

I'm thinking of dyeing my hair a wild colour. In the past I've seen talk of 'blue fringes' as shorthand for TRAs. I don't fancy blue hair so that's okay.

But more recently, I've seen RadFems on Twitter talking about purple and pink haired people in the same way - as shorthand for TRAs.

I was really seriously thinking of dyeing my hair pink with either purple front bits or a hidden purple patch underneath - yet to decide. But does brightly coloured hair (of any colour) now signify TRA politics? Or am I over-thinking this!?

No. Or, at least, I hope not.

IcakethereforeIam · 14/06/2022 13:32

If tras can do dinosaurs, GCs can do hair.

RhubarbCrumbled · 14/06/2022 13:43

It means nothing! I have a variety of pink, green and blue. Last time I had it coloured, my hairdresser suggested a rainbow. I politely declined.

I have no idea. You notice some TRAs with pink/blue/green hair but just as many or more without.

Love your honesty Grin

I agree about blue hair TBH. But does your judgement extend to other colours?

Thanks everyone!

There is a 'danger-haired SJW' type meme, very much in the 'woke' signifiers, which may well correlate with TRAs.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 14/06/2022 14:17

My sil is 58 and has dyed her hair blue and pink and purple for decades

i try not to judge by appearances

(god its hard though 😀)

Circumferences · 14/06/2022 14:22

Basic pattern recognition.

Loud shouty TRAs do tend to have brightly coloured hair, it's definitely part of TRA sub culture.

That does not mean all people with coloured hair are adherents to gender ideology.

(I think of the very beautiful Jane Goldman who is GC).

beastlyslumber · 14/06/2022 14:26

Cool people need to reclaim coloured hair!

GrinitchSpinach · 14/06/2022 14:38

Colorful hair can definitely be a way of signaling support for sex denialism. See Dr. Michelle Forcier, who prescribes cross-sex hormones to children upon request.

But of course it can be just a style choice.

If I didn’t have to look relatively professional for my job, I would love to have brightly coloured hair!

IvyTwines · 14/06/2022 14:56

Anime, My Little Pony, unicorn toy colours, the very chemical, plasticky looking ones, make me assume TRA. There's also a clunky lack of style, if you see what I mean. It's not integrated in the way hippies, goths or punks would style and colour their hair and clothing.

It;s mainly that blue-y / green turquoisey colour that I really judge as TRA-y. I think pink or purple I am more open to considering the whole package. If someone with bright pink hair looked like they were influenced by japanese fashion and anime I might think that they look good, but I'd have some "concerns" due to the links between anime and trans. Another person with purple hair - so hard to say, but if they were fifties and looked gothic I might assume they were an old goth... but if they were 20 and were a man in male clothing apart from a handbag and crop top I'd probably judge them harshly!

I do think that it is normal, natural and fun to judge people on appearances! I hope that I do a good job of putting preconceptions aside in real life interactions where people could be harmed by me being extremely judgemental of superficial things!

Remainiac · 14/06/2022 14:59

I think “queer”, which could be anything on that LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Yeah, I get you!
Unfortunately, I normally go for quite plastic-ky looking hair colours because they fade out well and last longer at their more subtle and faded phase.

But my plastic-ky hair stage normally only lasts a couple of weeks before the fade, then I'm heading into much more Jade Goldman-esque territory of soft hues.

I wouldn't say I'm 'stylish' but I don't have that 'clunky lack of style' you talk of - I know what goes together and I don't normally look like I've slept in a bin as most TRAs do 😏

Your posts are really making me laugh.

Thank you for being willing to give more open consideration to pink/purple haired folks. We are an oppressed minority ya know Grin

I would love to experiment with pink hair, as I think it can look great. I haven't because my hair is mostly still dark and I can't be doing with bleaching, but once it's gone fully silver I'm planning to. I think the blue/aqua hair is most strongly associated with transactivists, but it's not just the hair is it – there's a general style and look too. If you have a different, more grown-up or unique style, that would reduce the effect!

Not saying you have to channel Helen Mirren, but just as an example - she's doing it her own way and doesn't have a TRA vibe.

I hope not! My hair has been all sort of colours and was most recently turquoise. TRA-turquoise is not the hair colour alone, as others have pointed out.

penelopepea · 14/06/2022 15:27

My hair is pink/purple because I like it and it suits me. That's it Confused

AmbushedByCake · 14/06/2022 15:29

This is news to me. I am not a TRA by any stretch of the imagination and have very vivid red hair at the moment, as bright as I can get away with in the office. During lockdown it was blonde with magenta ends. Think Beyonce in the Bootylicious video if she had to do it at home with a box of Clairol.

At home with a box of Clairol is exactly how I assume Beyonce does her hair 😂

Go for it. My friend who lectures in Gender Studies, occasionally has blue or pink hair. She is straight and very GC. So confounding the stereotype which is also very GC.

Athenajm80 · 14/06/2022 15:43

I have kind of green hair at the moment. It's fading and the roots didn't take, hence the mind of. I have had blue hair in the past but I hope it fits my "look" as I also have 1.5 tattoo sleeves and various other tattoos, and not the shitty ones that all the hipsters and Love Island types have, but proper one off designs by great artists around the world.

I also have GC badges on my rucksack and (once I finish making it) a suffragette colour friendship bracelet. I don't remember them taking so long to make when I was a kid!

Well done to PP for admitting the judgy, even if you'd probably judge me badly. I too judge everyone, especially people who don't use proper SPAG or who wear leggings that are so cheap I can see their pants and cellulite. Like you, once I have to interact with them, I withhold the judging until/unless they prove me right 😉
