Emily Bridges in the news again

There’s a lot to unpack here. The violent abuse Bridges received is utter disgraceful and rightly it should be acknowledged that Bridges should be able to live Bridges life without fear or harassment.

The tenor of the debate is not helped by these woe is me articles that have been dripping into the media since the New Year. Quite frankly, it feels like propaganda as there’s no push back on the issue at play: males do not belong in female sport.

Yo Princess! Imma womaning?

Hagiography · 08/06/2022 22:06

<high five, sister female-type!>

Interesting photographs.

Its reprehensible that Emily has had threats, and I hope the appropriate authorities have been informed and are able to address them. I hope Emily is free to explore life, styling choices and accessories as they wish, and feels safe and secure doing so.

This doesn't change the fact that Emily is going to have to learn to accept when women say 'no'. We can say it politely; we can say it bluntly - you cannot race with women.

Belovedfool · 08/06/2022 22:31

I think photoshop is one of the blights of our time. I almost always question photos now, I've seen too many "massive red moon" photos to believe media images unquestioningly. And boy, do these images raise questions. Uncanny.

Didactylos · 08/06/2022 22:37

Is it just me who has that song ' We're only making plans for Nigel' on repeat in my mind after seeing that interview?

Peregrina · 08/06/2022 23:05

Who has spoken out about the threats that J.K Rowling and others have had to put up with? What we get instead is cries of Transphobe.

IcakethereforeIam · 08/06/2022 23:10

I've never seen any of these threats, except the ones from the hacked account sent to LOJ, etc. I unequivocally condemn any such threats.

Interesting photographs.

“Elite athlete Bridges, who was assigned male at birth before transitioning,”

why is ITV allowed to write this. One is not assigned a sex at birth, one is born a sex.

jk Rowling a 5'4" bookworm in late middle age, compared with ms bridges, a 6'2" muscular athlete approaching her physical peak.

puffyisgood · 08/06/2022 23:35

the point of that last post being that most of the (I assume) rabble of inadequate gammons and incels would run a mile if they ever came face to face with someone so physically imposing.

Yes exactly @puffyisgood I’ve just started on HRT. My doctor said if you find this type doesn’t work for you don’t worry, we’ll find one that does. A study of one is just laughable in its absolute pointlessness.

I expect there's a control group or something.

e.g. maybe the study could draw on the fact that Emily's mum is much smaller and weaker than Emily's dad* - there you go, case closed, females (of which Emily is one) are small and weak, case closed.

  • details of whom seem curiously absent from the public eye given the mother's extreme prominence.

On the testosterone levels:

Surely having different permitted levels of testosterone for women and TW (at least the ones who are still legally men) in the same competition is a straightforward breach of the Equality Act? It’s direct discrimination.

What am I missing?

If I had to justify it I'd say that the 5 nmol/L limit is intended to represent one or both of:

(1) the very upper limit of what might be seen in the body of a halfway healthy natal woman; and
(2) a level that might be halfway realistic for a trans woman to get to without drowning her in the medication in the style of a foie gras duck.

it's not supposed to be a level that's even nearly average or typical.

Also women's hormonal levels peak and trough throughout our menstrual cycles. Cross sex hormones on the other hand will be a constant level. Fond of Beetles was trying to explain to me at a meeting in Oxford that when the hormone level is tested is really important. I might not get this right as I'm not a biologist 😜 but the oestrogen can wash out if a make quite quickly. So a man could be tested whilst on oestrogen and test below 5 nmol per litre then stop taking it after testing and within 3 days (?) the oestrogen will be gone and testosterone is dominant again. I'm not sure of the effects of also taking testosterone suppressant (is that a thing). More questions from me there! I guess the take home is that a man taking oestrogen can be a temporary thing. Given this fiddle it is quite likely that the scientific research will feel like it makes men weaker and the same as women if they take oestrogen!
Personally I think testosterone levels are a red herring and that men should not be able to compete in women's sport full stop.

If search worked I'd dig up a post that explains how easy it is to manipulate T levels. If I wanted to suppress a T level for some reason, I'd advise that person to abstain from training for a few sessions and I'd also recommend fasting or a substantial calorie reduction for 48hrs or so.

FemaleAndLearning · 09/06/2022 08:01

Yes those who think it is all about hormones really need to know about this manipulation. It just another tool to cheat with.

BatDuck · 16/06/2022 14:19

Next up in the latest series of articles in the mainstream media from Emily Bridges, a podcast with DiVA magazine. And like all the other articles, Bridges complains about the public and media attention despite agreeing to be on the ITV news and the front cover of DIVA magazine.

Not entering women's races is a great way to avoid negative attention.

Many other males avoid negative attention via this well-established technique.

Just a thought.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 16/06/2022 16:09

Oh dear!

Somanysocks · 16/06/2022 16:31

EB wants to make the world a better place apparently (but not for the 51% that are women it seems).

And that will be why Bridges has been taking part in a documentary for the last 12 months then?

Helleofabore · 16/06/2022 20:26

twitter.com/fondofbeetles/status/1537506900279013377?s=12

an interesting development.

The governing body of cycling, the UCI, releases its new transgender policy. Reduces testosterone limit to 2.5nmol (from 5) and increases the transition period from 12 to 24 months. Means Emily Bridges won't be able to compete in women's category until next year.

from Sean Ingle.

Dreikanter · 16/06/2022 20:40

From Sean Ingle’s Tweet.

FFS, female athletes will never include someone who transitions from male to female.
