Emily Bridges claims there is no advantage in sport

Maybe someone else can explain it to me because as someone who has never been involved with sport at a high level, I don't understand the point if you claim not to be able to beat your rivals, I mean isn't that the point of high level sport? If you're not competitive, what is the point in competing? Wouldn't you just do it for fun otherwise than put your body through high level competition? In a previous interview didn't Emily Bridges state that the aim was to be competitive again?

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10857133/Emily-Bridges-determined-prove-boasts-no-advantage-trans-woman-cyclist.html

"In her first interview since, Bridges told DIVA magazine it was wrong to say that trans women in sport retain inherent advantages and claimed to be able to prove it.

'I understand how you'd come to this conclusion because a lot of people still view trans women as men with male anatomies and physiologies,' she said.

'But hormone replacement therapy has such a massive effect. The aerobic performance difference is gone after about four months.

'There are studies going on for trans women in sport. I'm doing one and the performance drop-off that I've seen is massive'."

Well, Emily would say that, wouldn’t Emily?

I prefer to take my evidence from actual sports scientists

Signalbox · 26/05/2022 21:59

Is Bridges in Joanna Harper's Loughborough Uni study? There are huge flaws with this study. This article explains why...

Meanwhile, complaints have been submitted to British Cycling over Maxine Yates being allowed to compete in the expert women’s downhill national at Fort William.

Good on the woman in second (first!) place for submitting a complaint - I hope she wins it.

Yes, whatever physical point EB is at, it’s artificial in performance terms. Competing under a regime of drugs designed to alter your performance levels, but only just enough to make you an elite performer, isn’t ethical competition. It’s rigging the game.

I can claim to speak Chinese, doesn't mean I could hold a coherent conversation with Xi Jinping

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/05/2022 22:10

Bollocks again.

I got deleted for saying bollocks yesterday.

In what way is Emily "transitioning" if that's the case? This is Aristotle-level 'women are just deformed men' logic

Bridges is transitioning via photoshop.

NotTerfNorCis · 26/05/2022 22:12

If sport needs to be segregated, then it should be for reasons of physical fairness, and that means by sex not 'gender identity'. It's beyond obvious.

SidewaysOtter · 26/05/2022 22:16

Is anyone else sick of Bridges putting Bridgeself into the media limelight then complaining that people talk about Bridges.

Aren't we all?

'I understand how you'd come to this conclusion because a lot of people still view trans women as men with male anatomies and physiologies,' she said.

Well yes, love. We do. Because you do have male anatomies and physiologies, no matter how you choose to identify.

frostedfruit · 26/05/2022 22:23

New Zealand trans winners too ... funny how all these trans women who have 'no significant advantages' are suddenly winning all the races off.road.cc/content/news/transgender-rider-causes-confusion-for-new-zealand-downhill-race-field-1506

The photographer working for Diva is incredible.

Bollocks are a large part of the problem.

Bridges is transitioning via photoshop.

No, no, no - apparently Emily really looks like that, and it’s the nasty transphobic press using old pre transition photos to make Emily look … not like that.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 26/05/2022 22:33

<snigger>
Course Emily really looks like that.
Tbf Emily looks to me like a photoshopped man anyway.

I mean this in all possible ways...

BOLLOCKS

I opened this thread already thinking how I’d respond. Didn’t need to, this says it all.

I cannot wrap my head around the fact that the sporting world (across multiple disciplines) is so blooming stupid.

miri1985 · 27/05/2022 02:29

IMHO its more cowardice than stupidity, no one wanted to stick their neck out unnecessarily and incur a twitter wrath. Then when they have a trans woman competing in their womens division, they scramble and hastily come up with rules. They're all waiting for an organisation like the IOC to make proper rules so they can be like "we had no choice".

Unless I'm wrong the only organisations who've been willing to stick their neck out so far has been world rugby and powerlifting

yes, you’re right - it’s cowardice.

This is another example of subtle coercion. Those coercive tactics need to be pushed to the verge - there is NOTHING wrong with wanting sex-based categories in sport (I won’t derail with the obvious other situations).

KohlaParasaurus · 27/05/2022 03:33

Whining about performance is a distraction. This person is male, has no place in women's sporting competitions even if they came last every time, and if they were older I'd say they were a particularly unsavoury illustration of male privilege.

SomersetONeil · 27/05/2022 03:47

This person has no place in women’s sport.

I have zero interest in being ‘inclusive’. Seriously there are not enough 🙄 or tiny 🎻 in the world.

Sport - let alone elite sport - is NOT inclusive. It never has been, and never will be. The only people who progress past beginner stage to actually compete, are people who are good enough to compete. It is the very definition of ‘exclusive’.

So just go away and find your own category, or ask the men to budge up and accommodate you.

I'm so sick that this debate even is considered worthy of a conversation.

Sex differences in sports and lifting heavy objects and running and other physical things are so blatantly obvious and has been since hominids walked the earth.

But just in case we need MORE evidence than history or our eyes, here's a Duke University report.

And if you want to tend a garden for a woman athlete fighting back, check out how they are now going after Beth Stelzer of Save Women's Sports

I feel like woman have been fighting an uphill battle for so many years against men and now trans woman come along and bash us with this, but if we speak out we’re labelled transphobic

Helleofabore · 27/05/2022 06:16

I think that Emily’s mum also deserves a mention here as to why Emily thinks they should have this entitlement. (waves to Emily’s mum who has been known to frequent these boards)

Of course Emily, Harper is well known for their rigorous and robust studies in this, their heavily invested area of interest!!

And I am sure Harper has come up with a great way to prove that you, Emily, are performing at your peak every. single. performance.

Plus… what happens if Emily DOES start to win all the female events in say … three years time after laying low. Or will Emily always come 4th from now on like a miracle ?

Not that it matters Emily. Even a poorly performing motor on a bike entered in the Tour de France is still considered having an advantage regardless of whether it wins or not.
