Oh so sad.

Has great respect for her, have always thought she's never put a foot wrong.

Michelle Obama uses Wonxn
OP posts:
Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/05/2022 10:15

Didn't she get the TRA memo about it?

DaisyQuakeJohnson · 17/05/2022 10:20

She used 'women' in her post. The 'womxn' spelling is in the graphic that was shared from elsewhere.

There are gc feminists who use womxn and womyn. They've been used since the 1970s - it's about erasing the 'men' part of women. And women having a word that doesn't reference men.

In most places its use predates any of the TRA/MRA bullshit.

Artichokeleaves · 17/05/2022 12:26

I suppose its marginally better than the totally dehumanised 'thing with x reproductive/access/service providing points' like 'bleeders' and 'thing with uterus' (since the bloke informed us all that people meant specifically 'men', as if we didn't already know)

If we're using womxn (is a pronunciation guide being included in this?) to mean 'random group of mixed sex people who wish to be known by that term' then fine, so long as I can use 'woman' as 'biological female who wishes to be known by that term'.

BananaShrimp · 17/05/2022 12:30

I always thought “womxn” was used as a more inclusive alternative to “women” and it includes trans women etc.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 17/05/2022 12:30

I wasn't even sure if that was a typo in your title!

Womxn is so last year, Michelle, and apparently TERFs invented the word anyway. It's "bodies with uteruses" now, keep up.

Artichokeleaves · 17/05/2022 12:39

Yup. Service unit thingy with access/service points.

Brefugee · 17/05/2022 12:39

Wimmin was used a lot in the 70s, so much so that Private Eye had (still has?) a column using it in the title.

Michelle O didn't write the headline though, so don't worry.

Lottapianos · 17/05/2022 12:40

'Michelle O didn't write the headline though, so don't worry.'

I would be amazed if she's not fully TWAW though

I’va always thought that attitude was daft.

Are we all humxns now?!

Man originally just meant homo saphien, from the Sanskrit manu (mankind) via the Old English wifman (a female human) and werman (a male human).

The use of man = a male person is relatively recent, and post-Norman invasion. I know buildings older than than 🤣

Neverreturntoathread · 17/05/2022 13:29

Spot the origin of werewolf 👀

zanahoria · 17/05/2022 13:34

I have enough trouble without the typos

MagnoliaTaint · 17/05/2022 13:44

Here's the post. It uses 'women'.

MagnoliaTaint · 17/05/2022 13:46

Maybe it's this that's caused confusion:

'it will relegate the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues'

We usually spell it 'wims' on here, but they are in the US.

Yup, this.

Honestly, Michelle Obama is not the one taking our rights away. Keep the blame where it belongs.

since when? Since never. If you're talking about, say, being spontaneous and doing "something on a whim" it absolutely has an 'h' in it.

MagnoliaTaint · 17/05/2022 14:23

That was a joke, Brefugee. We call women 'wims' on here, sometimes.

No 'we ' don't 😂

It's always been 'whim'

MagnoliaTaint · 17/05/2022 14:24

Okay, a joke that clearly didn't take ... Grin

EarringsandLipstick · 17/05/2022 14:25

Oh oops.

I a) crossposted with Brefugee* and b) didn't get the joke (whispers* not sure it really is one!)

EarringsandLipstick · 17/05/2022 14:25

Bloody app & it's weird formatting 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

DaisyQuakeJohnson · 17/05/2022 17:22

iirc Hillary Clinton did an interview where her view seemed fairly gc and she admitted Chelsea felt differently from her.

I agree with @ArcheryAnnie Michelle Obama is not taking our rights away.
In fact she's likely to get a pile-on if certain groups notice she uses woman in her post.

PicniKTime · 17/05/2022 17:24

when people use ‘Womxn’ how is that even pronounced.

Are you sure, Daisy? I remember womyn being widely used among feminists in the 70s, and sometimes wimmin, as you say to avoid including man/men.
I don't remember seeing womxn -- not that that means it was never used, I just never happened to see it.

The daft thing is that womxn has started being used recently,
to include males. It would make more sense to have been used in the 70s to exclude males. But I've never spotted any logic in the trans movement ...

Brefugee · 17/05/2022 18:04

Modern feminists don't want to use our nasty 2nd wave ways though. More fool them Grin

Yy it wasn't nearly as popular as womyn but it was used occasionally. It looks like the TWAW crowd have claimed it now.
