'... the world – especially the digital world – we live in means that we don’t have control over what we or our children see.'

Thanks for the link. I can't believe they want to blame religious people for shutting down an inappropriate show for under 16s, when the vast majority looking at it would have had concerns.

What next - lessons on rabbit-skinning at Easter for toddlers as it can happen you know, some people eat rabbit, all normal and let's do it naked too, nothing to see here.

I wonder how the Guardian will
Save face in a few months time when the shit hits the fan?
Remember their article about Hannah in Roblox?
Actually that's just given me an idea.

Too funny. I just tried to go to the Outspoken Education link and the Patental Controls on my router blocked it. Because, you know, we have ways of controlling what our kids see, at least at home.

Haha! That's encouraging the controls are working. I learned the hard way that mine were inadequate. My kid could circumvent them (because although had online safety talks at home and school and nodded along, some kids are curious and have very little sense and if they want to access fandom-related content they're obsessed with, they will, even if that includes obscene, very dark kink-themed fanfic and forums with shady adult furries and BDSM enthusiasts). We had to have some serious chats, in which my kid disclosed they'd seen stuff they wished they hadn't and would go back in time and not have the internet if they could. And then went on to continue to try to access these sites, agggh. I now allow limited access to one device only, have prevented my kid from being able to download apps and have manually blocked as many websites as I can in addition to the woefully inadequate PG13 router setting. Because it is actually possible to control what your kids see online, even if you sometimes have to go to extra efforts to keep them safe.

Several people have speculated about the source of Guardian's income from readers and think that it might be their American readers which give them most revenue.

If that's correct, then the current US left views matter here and the US left is still asleep and trying to be kind. The political polarisation in there does not help things as now being gender critical is firmly seen as being right wing by most establishment lefties.

So the Guardian might change when the US left changes, if it ever does.

Yup, my sister now lives in the US and has been captured though I do my best... And of course the DC office played a big role in the unpleasantness that Maya Forstater had to endure.

I wonder what would happen if they took the show to the states?

Don’t give them ideas!!!

IcakethereforeIam · 12/05/2022 11:57

Come on! Could be hilarious!

Seriously, Josie, if you're reading this, don't take your show to the states. Might do well on the continent though....

jumpedintwice · 12/05/2022 12:06

If anyone is free on 20 June, there’s a discussion on this (‘Censorship: Alive and Well in the UK?’) streaming or in-person in London. I am sure the audience could do with a bit of balance www.the-knot.co.uk (I can’t work out how to link to the specific event, so you might need to go through the programme and look for 20 June events).

Artichokeleaves · 12/05/2022 12:28

When it comes to a total lack of safeguarding or ability to be responsible while in a position of responsibility by inviting children as young as five? Yes, censorship bloody well should be alive, well, kicking arse and it needs beefing up!

This just goes on and on demonstrating it's the same 'all boundaries are bad' crew who just want to queer everything on principle for their own happy agenda in their own personal little bubble, and fuck any impact on everyone else. And anyone who resists being made use of, there's a whole list of slurs and name calling to get you back in your place.

IcakethereforeIam · 12/05/2022 13:09

I think people who want to censor censorship are like people who want to ban abortion. They either haven't thought it through or are monsters masquerading as actual human beings. I suspect the same could be said for lots of absolutist positions. Many things require nuance.

School of sexuality education are in my school soon talking to older students. I hope they don't get invited back to talk to the younger ones

Redshoeblueshoe · 18/05/2022 13:33

Sorry I can't do links but Baroness Nicholson has just published on Twitter the reply she got from the Arts council.

They have now withdrawn funding

PrelateChuckles · 18/05/2022 13:38

Excellent. Here's the letters she posted on Twitter.

Would love to know what assurances they sought, and what they received...

Clymene · 18/05/2022 13:44

Excellent. I hope Josie whatsit has a long hard think now. Or enrols herself on a safeguarding course.

As for the Arts Council, I've got funding from them before and you can be quite vague in your ideas because of course you need the cash to do the development. And they probably only asked for This Egg's policy which was probably just taken off the net to tick a box on the application form.

I does raise the question of professional qualifications when children are the audience for an arts project. They don't ask for any as far as I recall.

IcakethereforeIam · 18/05/2022 13:47

I don't see where it says they've withdrawn funding, as I understand it the money had already been awarded.

I think the Art's Council's letter is the same, word for word, as another poster received from them by email (I think it's on another thread). It's a non-answer. Disingenuous ass covering, admitting no culpability. Implying they got the tour cancelled without saying they did, because they didn't.

I still think the Baroness is a superstar. And it has been cancelled, at least for now.

MagnoliaTaint · 18/05/2022 14:20

Gah, Mumsnet! Fix the bloody image upload!!!

Clymene · 18/05/2022 14:29

They will have asked for the money back. You have to show how you have spent it and it has to be itemised down to the letter. She would have had funding for actors, costumes, sets, accommodation and transport as part of the tour.

IcakethereforeIam · 18/05/2022 14:55

Thanks @Clymene that's good to know.

TheBiologyStupid · 18/05/2022 15:23

Absolutely!

MagnoliaTaint · 18/05/2022 16:09

It should all be quite clearly laid out, grants given, grants repaid, etc. I think that's how AC operates, no?

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 18/05/2022 20:38

I wonder if the guardian will take down the “you’re all mean narrow minded bigots” article by the woman behind the show now

MangyInseam · 18/05/2022 21:34

Could someone give a short summary of what the letters say? I can't read them even with the screen touching my nose.

Rightsraptor · 18/05/2022 22:11

I cannot believe Sir Nicholas Serota addressed Baroness Nicholson (of Winterbourne) as 'Lady Winterbourne'. He can't have read the letter before signing as he would have known that was wrong.

Not that I could read it here either but it was much clearer on Glinner's Substack.
