Can anyone point me in the direction of the thread about how to make outside spaces safer and more useable for females?

Hi,

A while ago (possibly before Corona even!) there was a thread about a study by a woman about how barriers to female children using outside recreational areas. Can anyone remember this? I would really like to find the thread and read the article/paper/study.

Sorry to be so vague, the memory is not what it used to be.

I do remember the thread, but don't think it was as long ago as pre covid. I seem to think it was the poster's daughter who was involved too. No idea what the title was, though, so I'm not much help.

There was this one on town planning - not sure if it's this www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/3829787-So-it-turns-out-that-even-saving-the-planet-isnt-women-friendly

Not sure where the thread is, but I think the organisation is Make Space For Girls

I remember it too they linked to some work done in Spain on a outdoor space redesigned with teenager girls involved. I often think about it as I have a DD who is teaching herself to skateboard but every time we go to the skatepark it’s full of young or teen boys which is fine but it’s intimidating & really puts her off. I also have a teen DD who is the only one left in her peer group still doing competitive sport outside school they all dropped sport aged 12-13. I wonder if they had my female friendly outside spaces they’d still be doing sport

There's a bit in Caroline Criado Perez's Invisible Women about this so you should be able to get the details from there.

The follow up thread to the one you are thinking about

I think I started it if that helps? I don't know how to to search though on my name but you're welcome to.

There’s now an organisation called Make Space for Girls, which campaigns for this. I think it grew from a Mumsnetter. They have a survey out about skate parks right now.

Thank you all so much. I think I have enough to go on now. You are all wonderful.

A lot of the problem stems from the fact that when teenage girls go out, they get hassled by boys and men. Whereas when teenage boys go out they are simply not sexually objectified in the same way. Girls tend to retreat to their room/friends houses, while boys have the run of the outdoor spaces. Not to mention the vast areas of public land given over to football/cricket/rugby pitches etc yet so few areas designed with girls in mind. Netball/basketball courts are in short supply where I live. Add to this the school uniform PE policy of girls wearing incredibly short skorts, which many feel uncomfortable in-whereas boys can wear decent length shorts!
