This was inevitable. I'm sure many people foresaw other comedians getting attacked

Thanks, Will Smith. Now people feel more empowered to shut down people who say things they don't like, with violence.

DomesticatedZombie · 04/05/2022 10:11

Horrible. Male violence, celebrated and encouraged.

NecessaryScene · 04/05/2022 10:12

Good (and prescient) piece on it by Jimmy Dore a few weeks ago:

As soon as I saw that and I saw they gave him the Oscar without kicking him out or arresting him, or security coming over and removing him, as soon as I saw that that none of that happened, I was like "this is going to be bad for comedians. This is going to be bad".

Because people already get assaulted in comedy clubs. Not all the time but it's not that uncommon. Like I said, it's happened to me at least three times. And so now the next time a woman heckler gets shut down by a comedian, her date or her husband is gonna feel that it's his duty to go assault that comedian. Because that's what guys are supposed to do, right? God is calling them to protect - God is calling them to protect women who are now the butt of jokes. How dare you call my wife fit and sexy?

So and now people are encouraging that to happen. [Quoting a tweet]. "I, personally, would like to see more comedians get slapped up. I'm talking about Dave Chappelle by the way."

This person says, "I love how none of us care about how Chris Rock feels". And this person says "I, personally, would like to see more comedians get slapped up. I'm talking about Dave..."

So this is amazing. And that there's plenty of these. Here's another one: "The correct answer is someone should have slapped the shit outta Dave Chapelle too".

Do you understand what you're encouraging? You're encouraging people to assault performers who perform live, if they don't like what they're saying. That's called barbaric. That's called uncivilized.

To be clear - it's awful & unacceptable that Chappelle was assaulted; the response was also horrific.

Los Angeles police confirmed to Eyewitness News that they responded to an incident at the Hollywood Bowl around 10:45 p.m. and a man who was reportedly armed with a gun and a knife was taken into custody

The BBC missed the bit about the knife and the gun

Unhinged Sad

Manderleyagain · 04/05/2022 11:43

In the bbc report chappelle made light of it afterwards:
Chappelle joked: "I've been doing this 35 years. I just stomped a [person] backstage. I've always wanted to do that." I wonder what he said instead of person? Strange quote.

ScreamingMeMe · 04/05/2022 11:44

Possibly a swear word or the n-word, I'm guessing.

RoseslnTheHospital · 04/05/2022 13:40

It was the n word that's been redacted by the BBC.

I can understand the fear of being assaulted by an unknown man like that, especially armed with a possibly real gun and a knife. But all the quotes afterwards about how thrilled they all were to have been able to "stomp" someone and beat them up is just grim.

I've seen a video of the alleged attacker being taken away on a strecher. Looks like their arm was broken and/or dislocated.

Mail said Transman?

ScreamingMeMe · 04/05/2022 16:13

I think Chappelle joked afterwards that it was a transman who attacked him. I wouldn't put too much stock in that.

FunnyTalks · 04/05/2022 16:16

The way trans ideology has taken over the arts is so depressing. Comedy and art should be free to challenge the establishment. I can't think of a single female comedian who dares question trans orthodoxy and I don't blame them.

FromEden · 04/05/2022 16:21

I went to see Dave Chappelle last year and we couldn't even access our phones during the show. I'm wondering how this person managed to get a knife and a gun through security.

EsmaCannonball · 04/05/2022 17:20

The photo of the man who did it shows him cuffed rather awkwardly to the gurney, so that might account for his arm looking broken. He's also wearing nail varnish so ... Antifa? Enby? Just as much a woman as Sojourner Truth because he wants to look pretty?

BootsAndRoots · 04/05/2022 21:01

When you have people proudly proclaiming "punch a terf", this is what you get.

GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 04/05/2022 21:37

BTW The report says gun shaped knife (& notes it may have been plastic)
I must admit my first thought is why there is a market for gun shaped knives Confused

you don't like a performer - don't go/leave!!!

I hope Will Smith is feeling ashamed

Abso-fucking-lutely

hallouminatus · 04/05/2022 22:26

"I just stomped a [person] backstage. I've always wanted to do that."

Chappelle appears to have boasted on stage about participating in a violent assault on this person, who had presumably already been disarmed and restrained. Another witness apparently said some ten people were "kicking his ass". While boasting about the attack, he apparently referred to his victim using a racial slur.

How long a jail sentence can he expect?

Any guesses?

hallouminatus · 04/05/2022 22:32

"I've always wanted to do that." is chilling.

ControversialOpening · 04/05/2022 22:34

hallouminatus

You understand that a comedian on stage might not necessarily be completely serious?

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 04/05/2022 22:56

I loved that Chris Rock came out and asked "Was that Will Smith?" LOL

WalrusSubmarine · 04/05/2022 23:17

There’s no doubt this must have been terrifying but I think his comments after feeds into the whole ‘violence is acceptable if you’re on the right side’ thing.

We could really do with calming it down. It’s easy to see who is unhinged.
