Just for clarity & in case anyone jumps at the chance to call me a right-winger bent on denying women reproductive rights: I’m a socialist agnostic who has protested anti-abortionists.

And I know a child safeguarding hazard when I see one.

Performances planned in Bath, Bristol and Norwich.

I suspect that the recent nature of the announcement means that there hasn't been enough time to update the websites of all the venes.

I that Theatre Royal site even helpfully listed prices for a seat occcupied by an adult with a baby on their lap. That would be a good idea, right. Men having babies on their laps while watching naked people taking about sex to children. Urgh.

For posterity

A fun and silly performance about the painfully AWKWARD subject of sex, exploring names and functions, boundaries, consent, pleasure, sex, sexuality, genderand relationships. Using real life bodies, personal stories, songs and movement, The Family Sex Show puts the good stuff at the forefront of conversation and imagines a future where there is no shame; but a celebration of difference, equalityandliberation.

ThisEgg invites you to bring your parents, bring your children, friends, lovers and bring your whole self.

The Family Sex Show is a theatre show which opens up conversations around relationships. The show is being created with input and guidance from educational and safeguarding specialists.

It is with an enormous sense of responsibility, compassion and caution towards young people and their parents that we consider this an important piece of theatre.
@IsabelaMadrigal thefamilysexshow.com/glossary
Long list of words and their meanings as defined by (probably) stonewall. Many not suitable for viewing or discussing with and by children and certainly (as you can see below), several are incorrectly described.

....the word gay "refers to being attracted to the same gender as your own". So, they copy the stonewall lie rather than the truth of same sex attracted.

Additionally, heterosexual (my emphasis) is "(also referred to as ‘straight’) someone who is attracted to people of the opposite gender. For example, a man who is attracted to a woman." So you can see that sex, which is immutable, is not mentioned but gender which is fluid, is.

Here's what they say about menstruation, you know, that thing that only happens to young women/females/XX - "(also referred to as ‘periods’) - when the womb lining sheds and blood comes out of the vagina. The length and frequency of periods varies from person to person. No mention at all of women, females, girls.

Here is what they say about period poverty "when someone doesn’t have access to the period or menstrual products they need."

This is what they describe as TERF "a person who excludes the rights of transgender women from their work on women's rights."

Sigh, here is the vagina described ..."a tube of muscle which connects the outside of the body (from the vulva) to the womb. The opening of this hole is the bit you can see from the outside." Yet again, women and girls eliminated.

Their descriptor for gender is as follows:_

"Gender is a construct, which means it is given a definition (which can change) by society. Someone’s gender relates to who they know they are in their minds. Some people might describe their gender in relation to femininity and masculinity and what they understand those words to mean.

Other people might not relate to those words at all. There are many different ways that people think and feel about gender - you can use whatever words around gender that might work for you!"

No mention of what a paedophile is nor MAP (minor attracted person) nor PIE (paedophile information exchange).

Organictangerine · 17/04/2022 19:38

Gender is a construct, which means it is given a definition (which can change)

How convenient.

stimpyyouidiot · 17/04/2022 19:47

Very, very pleased that i was able to help in this instance.

MarchXX · 17/04/2022 19:47

@ExMachinaDeus

Has anyone actually seen this show? I'm not in the area, and I"m not a safeguarding expert (I tach undergrads, so safeguarding issues are different ) but it would be interesting to hear responses to the show from those of you expert in safeguarding &development of children of the age bracket the show is designed for.

I am really conflicted about this - I abhor censorship, and particularly the kind of "Mary Whitehouse" knee jerk response to theatre that's open about sex. And that no-one has seen. I guess I was brought up as a bit of an old 1970s hippy/liberal about these things. Although never, ever pro-porn (which is basically commercialised rape).

But there are elements of the show, as it's advertised & talked about, that do seem quite at odds with the care we now try to take over children's bodies, minds, and their appropriate sexual development.

Any reports from audiences?

Have a look at their glossary of words they will be using during the show. Come back after and give us your thoughts then.

tabbycatstripy · 17/04/2022 19:51

If you are conflicted about children watching naked adults talking about adults having sex, then it’s fair to say you don’t know enough about safeguarding.

Censorship of what children can watch is not ‘bad’. Censorship is when the government intervened in what can be produced, shown or sold. Sometimes that’s justifiable, but most liberal people (I am one) would say adults can watch a sex show if they want.

Kids can’t. No conflict here at all.

tabbycatstripy · 17/04/2022 19:52

Intervenes, sorry.

PrelateChuckles · 17/04/2022 19:54

@tabbycatstripy

If it had been all fine and nothing to give anyone concern, it wouldn’t have been cancelled because of some emails and tweets. It was cancelled (clearly) because the theatres wouldn’t have wanted to be associated with the bad PR.
Yup.

Glad to hear someone somewhere has decided that there are good reasons not to show this dumb show, anyway.

MsGoodenough · 17/04/2022 19:56

Absolutely. If they were confident their show stood up to the criticism regarding safeguarding and appropriate content they wouldn't have pulled it. The idea that they have pulled it because they are concerned for the safety of their cast is laughable.

tabbycatstripy · 17/04/2022 19:59

I mean, there’s every possibility the cast, having stripped off in front of some big, unsuspecting bloke’s 5 year old (the tickets having been purchased in a hurry) would have been at risk, but IMO that’s a calculation you make when someone suggests you get your todger out around children.

My sympathy is limited.

DomesticatedZombie · 17/04/2022 20:18

Idk if anyone googled the title of the show but even that was problematic tbh - Google threw up some dodgy looking results, any young person googling would have seen the same.

tabbycatstripy · 17/04/2022 20:20

Yes, we all know what is suggested by “sex show”, don’t we?

DomesticatedZombie · 17/04/2022 20:26

Yep. So giggle. Much naughty.

All the arch, knowing jokes are also inappropriate.

I'm actually very liberal in teaching my children about bodies and sex; it has to be done respectfully without an agenda for the people doing the teaching - not to amuse the teacher or make them feel superior or all knowing or clever.

Years ago I'd seen mention of an animatronics show that I wanted to attend and I knew it had toys and motion in the title.

I tried googling various plausible phrases and that counts among the most inadvertently unnerving yet educational experiences of my life. I must admit though that I completely agreed with one site on the value of pistol grip 21V cordless drills although we had very different uses in mind.

tabbycatstripy · 17/04/2022 20:30

‘I'm actually very liberal in teaching my children about bodies and sex; it has to be done respectfully without an agenda for the people doing the teaching...’

Same. I’m trying to educate my kids and keep them safe, not mould them in the image of members of the radical society I would like to engender.
Glossary thefamilysexshow.com/glossary?i=white-supremacy
not one mention anywhere of, you know, men or women. How fucking tediously right on is that? Wankers.

IcakethereforeIam · 17/04/2022 20:56

I used to like the band Bare Naked Ladies, I never tried to Google them.
So far as I am aware the theatre company did not engage with any of the concerns expressed. I wonder if a safeguarding expert actually had a look at what they were proposing and kibosh it. All this DARVO stuff seems like facesaving.

PrelateChuckles · 17/04/2022 21:07

"The decision has been taken to cancel the national tour of ThisEgg’s The Family Sex Show. The Family Sex Show is a theatre show which opens up conversations around relationships offering safe and positive learning to children, young people and guardians about bodies and relationships, advised by safeguarding and educational specialists. Information regarding the content of the show was made available to bookers coming to see the production.

In recent days there has been unacceptable threat and abuse directed at both the company and the venues hosting the production by a small minority, and in order to ensure the safety of the performers, staff and audiences, the show will no longer play as planned at the current time."

Information regarding the content of the show was made available to bookers coming to see the production.

So the show was finished, and people booking the show for the theatres saw it before agreeing to book it? (In which case their website was not accurate when it said the show wasn't finished yet which is why they couldn't say exactly what was in it).
Or is that not how it works? Was 'information regarding the content' the same bare-bones stuff that was on the website?

Was there information made available from the bookers that was kept out of public view (either by accident or on purpose)?

The whole thing is just weird. You'd think if they wanted to sneak this all in under the radar it might be more... under the radar?

Organictangerine · 17/04/2022 21:14

Part of me wonders the theatres went quiet as they realised no enhanced DBS had been carried out on the ‘actors’. And that they’re cancelling now they’ve realised the checks won’t be completed on time.

DomesticatedZombie · 17/04/2022 21:15

Waffle and bullshit, innit. Words don't mean anything anymore...
