Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My Lib Dem candidate says that you are a woman if you feel like a woman

IDontHaveAnOutingHobby · 13/04/2022 16:00

That her friend transitioned and is now a biological woman
That men with beards shouldn't be allowed in women's loos but if they look like women that is ok. That if I see a man with a beard in a womens toilet I should call the police!
That toilets should be based on what you look like not your sex
That women should be allowed to compete in women's sport as well as men in womens and that would make it fair.
Men should be allowed in M&S changing rooms (but not if you can see their penis)
And many other gems.

She wasn't aware of any womens movements or that anyone was unhappy about biological men using women's facilities.

A finally as she walked down my drive-that the Lib Dem party is mostly women and so they know about women

Lib Dems who reject that position are fairly well organised and the movement is growing

Is she doing any kind of public Q&A? If more people heard her give those responses, then I doubt her seat would be quite so secure.

ZaraSizeMedium · 13/04/2022 17:15

Some of these local candidates really are astonishing aren’t they.

I’ve had an email response from my Labour candidate today after I sent him the email from the “Respect My Sex if you Want My X” campaign. He simply says ^”This is a very difficult issue and one that I am aware is out in the media. I am unable to answer your specific comments as I have not done sufficient research into the subject to be able to respond. Sorry I’m not able to answer your questions”. In other words he’s just not arsed.

Thankfully my local Conservative and Independent councillors have provided a comprehensive response, have confirmed that they’re fully on board, they know what a woman is and the times and places where biology and safeguarding matters.

I had planned on spoiling my paper but now I’m not, and have to figure out which one is more likely to beat the Labour candidate.

There is a hustings of all parties but I am away (plus you have to submit questions in advance)

What happens if I feel like I’m the lib deb candidate for your area? Is she just out of a job?

Liveliferun · 13/04/2022 17:31

This is why I cancelled my husbands LD membership a few years ago. (With his knowledge obviously!)

LemonRedwood · 13/04/2022 17:31

That debunking guide is jaw-dropping!

FemaleAndLearning · 13/04/2022 17:49

Knowing a Janet who used to be a John is not what this is about. I'm sure there are some lovely men who say they are women, but this is not about individuals.

So far I've had a telephone meeting with my conservative candidate. They knew that there were only men and women and this was based on biology. They wanted to learn more and were very receptive to the long email I sent after linking to all the relevant issues and how they related to local issues.

Just received email back from my labour candidate. They are gender critical know all the issues etc. So I feel very lucky! They were also pleased I had raised these issues I guess it means they can feed it back to The Labour Party.

Christ on a bike, those Lib Dem talking points are beyond awful and into a whole new alternative universe. One which is both science and logic free.

But this is the one which most raises my blood pressure:

"I'm not cis because I don't have a gender identity, only sex."
Much like saying "I don't have a sexuality, I'm just straight", this confuses having the most common gender identity for someone of a particular birth sex with having no gender identity at all. Perceiving that one's gender doesn't exist separately from one's sex is simply a way of describing one's perception of being cis.

I AM NOT CIS. I am not cis precisely because I refuse to conform to my bloody gender identity. That's the whole point.

But apparently there is no escape from their tangled knot of illogic.

Snugglepumpkin · 13/04/2022 18:03

I had some independent candidate turn up at the door who looked at me as if I'd asked him to solve Fermat's Last Theorem on the doorstep with a piece of cheese & a felt pen.

I asked him "What is a woman?"

He has gone away after announcing that nobody had ever asked him any such thing in his entire life & he couldn't possibly answer it 'just like that'.

He also told me I am the only person in the world asking about this & wasn't happy when I asked him if he'd ever read a newspaper or listened to the news.

So far, the Labour woman ran away & the Independent man was stumped.
Haven't enjoyed being door stepped this much in years.

That debunking guide is quite astonishing.

ExMachinaDeus · 13/04/2022 18:27

So she’s really working hard for your vote then @IDontHaveAnOutingHobby!

Usually I would have said no thanks but read something on here last week and so asked, What is a woman

It was actually quite entertaining although I am frustrated that she left without getting it.

And what exactly is feeling like a woman ........ you like having long hair? You want to cook a meal every night for your family ? You like to wear stilletos?you like cutesy fluffy things? I'd love to know.

EdithStourton · 13/04/2022 19:25

@applesandpears33

That debunking guide is quite astonishing.
It makes me glad that I left the LibDems some time ago.

I think she meant if you self identify as one- but that wasnt what she said.

This is entirely the reason that the Lib Dems have lost my vote #respectmysex

Mochudubh · 13/04/2022 20:40

What I can never get my head around is, surely, if a man truly "felt" Iike a woman, they would completely understand why, and accept that, women don't want men in spaces where women are vulnerable.

The fact that these men don't accept or understand that is surely evidence/proof that they really don't know what being a woman feels like.

Sorry for the poor punctuation, I'm trying to articulate what I mean.

Silversilverstreet · 14/04/2022 11:28

The Lib Dem candidate for my ward knocked on the door at the start of this week. I’ve been reading threads on the FWR board for long enough to think I ought to talk to him.

Essentially he says he “sits on the fence” on these issues. I then asked him, if he were elected and the official Lib Dem policy was to welcome (trans people into women’s changing rooms at the Council-run swimming pools*), how would he vote? He said he would abstain.

I should have asked him what would be the point of voting for him in that case, but I didn’t think of that at the time.

He said this is something that he and his family discuss a lot over the dining table at home. He said (I don’t think I asked) that his wife was a professor. When I asked what of, he said something I don’t exactly remember and Ethics, so they probably do.

Although it wasn’t what I would prefer to have heard, at least he had thought about it, unlike the OP’s candidate, and wasn’t just parroting the answers from that scary Debunking Lib Dem list.

It’s probably relevant to say that I live in a small university city. My ward has two Lib Dem councillors and one Labour.

*I think this was the example I gave. Something similar anyway.

GrimDamnFanjo · 15/04/2022 13:23

I think the LibDems are lost which is why I left.
I was a very active member, Councillor etc

My experience was that there was always some misogyny in the party. I don't think that the tide will be turned back until we experience large scale societal change.

I take my hat off to the GC women still left in there. I was cheering when I saw Bness Ludford asking questions.

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 15/04/2022 13:27

She sounds like a bona fide genius!
Give her an award. Has she a Twitter account I can follow?

DomesticatedZombie · 15/04/2022 13:28

So, tell us, OP, will you be voting for her?

BotCrossHuns · 15/04/2022 13:50

The Lib Dems and Labour are absolutely the top parties around here, no-one else gets a look in really.

Of the two, I'm guessing Labour perhaps has more of a handle on the issues, but God knows really.

That Lib Dem debunking guide is terrible. And yet I find it hard to come up with concise rebuttals to it - it's so hard to argue properly against something that isn't argued well in the first place!! I wish there was a site that debunked the debunking.

The last Lib Dem guy who came 2-3 years ago told me, when I said that his party clearly didn't want people like me in it, that it was such a 'complicated issue' and when I said that they clearly weren't for me if they were actively telling women not to join if they didn't think TWAW, he kind of agreed and went on to the next house. No interest in debating or trying to convince me. He was only about 21, so not sure if he was so taken in by the ideology that he just thought I was a hopeless bigot and not worth the effort; or whether he actually agreed with me generally but felt that other things in the party were more important (it was when they were keen to get back in the EU). In any case, he was just not up for a debate about it.

Terfydactyl · 15/04/2022 14:41

That men with beards shouldn't be allowed in women's loos but if they look like women that is ok
Alex Drummond and his beard are gonna be pissed.

MangyInseam · 15/04/2022 21:19

She seems really out of touch, apart from anything else. Doesn't she listen to the news?
