@MarshaBradyo

I always remembered the footballer case where someone was arrested due to Tweet and incitement of hatred

Why don’t women get this protection?

Clue's in this bit...

Why don't women get this protection

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/04/2022 09:24

TRAs actually had the cheek to say that by complaining about these threats, JK Rowling was putting the person who made them in real danger! You couldn't make this shit up.

That's their entire MO. DARVO, cry bullying, playing the victim.

FrancescaContini · 04/04/2022 09:24

@Roseglen84

Unfortunately, the social media companies that rule our lives are run by inadequate men who grew up on porn and who don't give a shit about actual women.
Yep, in a nutshell Angry
tigger2022 · 04/04/2022 09:25

Twitter is absolutely ridiculous! A wonderful person I knew was bullied to death by [public figure] on Twitter. It was utterly heartbreaking. Left behind wife and children. And trolls continued to bully them after their death, even setting up parody accounts in the name of my dead friend. And I keep getting told this is not in violation of Twitter's rules! It's outrageous how some people act with impunity.

JK Rowling gets thousands of death and rape threats, and Twitter is just... cool with it?

CriticalCondition · 04/04/2022 09:42

Bloody hell, that photo! What kind of sword is that?

AlisonDonut · 04/04/2022 09:48

Why are men so obsessed with swords?

Datun · 04/04/2022 09:50

@pistachioicecream

I’d reported this too and just got an update to say that account has been found to have violated Twitter’s rules.

Maybe they didn’t like the publicity they were getting about it ?

And that's why people overlook the flaws in the Daily Mail.

If the publicity is responsible for the removal of the tweet, then the Daily Mail did that.

It’s a katana. Of course, samurai were all men & they were an elite - but I suspect this person’s interest is rooted in the usage of the katana in Japanese pop culture, specifically anime.

Thank you. I love the breadth of knowledge on here. It joins the dots and helps the patterns appear.

Phallic symbolism?
DameHelena · 04/04/2022 10:20

I reported it and had a message this morning to say their 'investigation found that this account violated the Twitter Rules… Violating our rules against abuse and harassment.'
The account is still there, but no new tweets since 2 April. I'm not sure what that means –is the person banned from posting new tweets but the account gets to stay?

PaterPower · 04/04/2022 10:24

I imagine he prances around his bedroom waving the thing around and pretending he actually knows how to use it…

…whilst trying his best to believe that he wouldn’t immediately run in the opposite direction if he ever got into a sword / any type of fight.

Somanysocks · 04/04/2022 10:32

The topsy turvy world of twitter seemingly run by 14-year-old boys who can't get a girlfriend.

A shit one, looks like a sub £50 katana to me AKA a wall hanger not practical.

AKA junk, you need to spend at least £300 for a decent one thats actually usable so I wouldnt pay any attention to the fool.

there used to be a great video on youtube of some idiot swinging a wall hanger around, it shattered on impact into 3 pieces and nearly hit him in the face, you cant make a usable blade out of stainless steel thats above about 10 inches long, the brittleness of the material becomes a liability, hence only good for hanging on a wall.

Thats a sexist comment, I own 11 swords and various other bits and pieces and I am not a man.

How are you defining 'man'?

nauticant · 04/04/2022 10:55

A sexist comment would have been no women are interested in swords. That wasn't said and you're twisting meaning.

I once dated a guy who had a [pretend] Samurai sword on his wall.

I started talking about the way they used to be made, with the thousands of folds to keep it sharp for a lifetime and the history of them [I studied Japanese as well for a year, and was obsessed with the history in my early 20s].

Completely blank. No idea or interest about anything to do with swords. Just a sword on the wall. Potential red flag right there.

IsadoraQuagmire · 04/04/2022 11:07

You can't rely on Twitter to do anything about the most horrendous threats and libellous comments. You can always rely on them to stand up for TRAs/MRAs, and ban anyone who says that men can't magically become women however.

sharp for a lifetime? it was pig iron it had to be folded thousands of times to make it usable and clay tempered to draw out the martensite on one side of the blade only otherwise they would be useless, it certainly wasn't sharp for a lifetime they had to be cleaned and oiled endlessly as they rusted as soon as you looked at them.

despite all the japanese romaticising them they were inferior steel to western steel, most of their lore comes from fighting the mongols whos swords were absolute junk too, even worse.

The vikings had amazing steel as did india.

RoyalCorgi · 04/04/2022 13:38

It's against the law to send death threats. Though I don't expect the police would act on it if JKR reported this person. After all, they've got their hands full dealing with people like Marion Millar and Ceri Black.

Are there any lawyers here who could tell me if Twitter has any liability when it comes to death threats? I know with things like libel, there's a bit of a debate about whether Twitter and Facebook are more like publishers (liable) or phone companies (not liable). Presumably the same would apply to death threats?

NitroNine · 04/04/2022 14:50

You’re very welcome CriticalCondition - I know enough to distinguish it from a wakizashi (one of the privileges samurai had was that they were allowed to carry two swords: the katana is the longer of the two). I wasn’t, however, completely confident it was, as explained by VelvetChairGirl - who clearly does know heaps about it! - designed to be decorative: it looked too flimsy (for want of a better word) but I didn’t want to make a claim outside my limited knowledge.

Anime is very popular amongst the TRAs of Twitter - the notorious STFU TERF meme (featuring a zombie transgirl who died rather than go through male puberty Hmm ) is just one example of where they find representation. Japanese pop culture generally seems to appeal - it’s evident in fashion choices, but also in discussion of things like futanari. (MNHQ, if someone reports this, clearly not all trans people. And I am certainly not claiming this specific individual is interested in futa, it is a general point relating to TRAs & Japanese pop culture, for which there is ample evidence.)

MargaritaPie · 04/04/2022 15:10

Won't the person posting this, er, music benefit from all the advertising she is getting from both the Daily Mail and JK Rowling's Twitter?
