I think this would be the right board for this, I am currently discussing the old Yorkie chocolate bar advertising on FB.

I have never actually eaten one, I wouldn't buy one because of the slogan and my mother never bought any either so no man or woman in the house ate them as she did all the shopping.

someone else on FB thinks it was a smart marketing strategy, reverse psychology, getting women to go "screw you I can eat any chocolate I want" and buying more as a result then they would otherwise.

I am curious if ladies here were more "screw you I'll take my money elsewhere" or "screw you I'll buy whatever I like".

@Brefugee
Thanks. So many people had no idea so glad I could shine some light on it for you personally, you're welcome😀
You're right its an old thread, and maybe a lesson to the state of peoples minds in 2022, and I was not aware of the rules to not being allowed to an old thread.

Just so I'm aware what period of time needs to pass before people are not allowed to voice an opinion?

I hope @steve8467 hasn't been composing that riposte in the nearly four years since everyone else lost interest in this thread 😕

I'm more interested in what Steve was Googling for this to have come up in his search results.

I used to like the one in the purple packaging...the one with biscuits and fruit in it; though, really, not my fave chocolate bar at all.....too much like hard work. Chocolate is supposed to be about instant pleasure.,

@fridgepants. Good question, who it was aimed at?
Provocative - yes
Sexual - Yes

Target audience and objective - Totally lost, what's you view on the agency was trying to achieve?

steve8467 · 17/02/2026 17:23

@Brefugee
Slightly confrontational tone for no reason?
No objective here. Just amazed by the replies and how many thought they were not allowed to buy it.
Don't label or view yourself as an airhead either it not good for self esteem, I'm sure you are an amazing person

I always thought the advert was a silly joke. If anything it was making fun of some men's fragile masculinity and regressive ideas that some social conservatives might have. It never occurred to me that the message was being taken seriously by some people. I was never a big fan, but I think girls and women were just as likely to buy them as boys and men.

Alright, ChatGPT

Same as some others, I always saw it as a joke. I mean, what company would've been that blatently sexist that they would likely end up losing their female customer base? It makes no sense from a business point of view.

Regardless I was always a bit of a rebel so continued eating them anyway.

I really just wanted to flag to other posters that this was a zombie thread. 🧟‍♀️

Surely a woman feeling pleasure in a bath is aimed at women? Similar to the sexy Coke ads?

And the Yorkies were aimed at men? I liked chunky chocolate so did have them, but probably not as much as I would have cos I hated the ads.

Lol, well it's started up again!

nOlives · 18/02/2026 09:23

I tried one once. Nearly broke my teeth on it. No contest at all for real Cadbury's chocolate. I wouldn't bother again.

steve8467 · 18/02/2026 13:49

As this ad was received so differently that I decided to looked up if it failed or succeeded.
Turns out sales increased 30% after this campaign, so looks like it did the job and must have bought in more new customers than it alienated.

Guess this proves the cliché of "all publicity is good publicity" (thats "cliche" not my believe!)
I tried to find gender demographics for Yorkie before and after ad but sadly found no study. I do find that chocolate buyers are bought approx 50/50 between men and women.
I would have thought more women bought chocolate than men. I have no idea why I would have this bias but interesting to find my perception was wrong.
