I think this would be the right board for this, I am currently discussing the old Yorkie chocolate bar advertising on FB.

I have never actually eaten one, I wouldn't buy one because of the slogan and my mother never bought any either so no man or woman in the house ate them as she did all the shopping.

someone else on FB thinks it was a smart marketing strategy, reverse psychology, getting women to go "screw you I can eat any chocolate I want" and buying more as a result then they would otherwise.

I am curious if ladies here were more "screw you I'll take my money elsewhere" or "screw you I'll buy whatever I like".

Liked the purple fruit and nut ones, they were lovely. I don’t know about the adverts, maybe I was a bit young to pay attention?

candycane222 · 20/03/2022 15:06

A lot of people thougt it was a bit of a joke back then too ...

Halllyup17 · 20/03/2022 15:13

Couldn't give a damn what the advert said. I don't take that kind of stuff to heart. What does it matter if some things are for men and some for women? It's obviously tongue-in-cheek in this case.

@VelvetChairGirl
yes but thats not saying men cant have any is it

In the 80s and 90s no man would want ANYTHING marketed at women. There was a definite macho thing going on.
You still hear men of a certain generation - you don't want that, that's for girls!

BluebellStreet · 20/03/2022 15:18

I remember thinking that the Flora in the fridge was my dad's as it was 'the margarine for men'.

jay55 · 20/03/2022 15:19

I boycotted Iceland for years for their Mum's go to Iceland advertising.
Especially as I'd grown up with a dad who did the food shop.

But I didn't stop eating Yorkies. Quite fancy a biscuit and raisin one.

Chocolate tended to pitched at kids or women. It was a different approach at a time most adverts were sexist (remember “Mum’s gone to Iceland “?). It was a big thick chunky bar and they tried to make it masculine in packaging.

Originally, the biscuit and raisin one was lovely. Then they were bought out and swapped to horrible palm oil cack. Can’t be doing with it.

ChrissyPlummer · 20/03/2022 15:22

There used to be a big advertisement as you arrived into York station on the train that had a picture of a Yorkie with the ‘ie’ removed like someone had bitten it off and it said ‘Welcome to York, where the men are hunky and the chocolate chunky’. Not something I can get upset about, if I want one I’ll eat one.

Dinoteeth · 20/03/2022 15:24

Yes in the sense it was marketed at men to buy as a gift for women. If I remember rightly Black Magic was the same.

Marketed at men to buy for women

crispmidnightpeace · 20/03/2022 15:26

Literally never crossed my mind, just always thought of it as a silly advertising slogan and as a family we tended to always mute ads anyway. It was clearly silly so took literally no notice.

SoyaChai · 20/03/2022 15:26

Yeah, I ate them because they said they weren't for girls. Similarly, as a kid, if a bunch of boys were telling me "football isn't for girls" I'd insist on playing football.

LadyMacduff · 20/03/2022 15:28

I thought it was funny, and I agree that chocolate is more often marketed at women.

If anything, it takes the piss out of men too insecure to buy something that might be viewed in any way as 'girly'.

Never stopped me buying it if I fancied one.

SausagePourHomme · 20/03/2022 15:29

I like others used to buy them and after the advert thought fuck you off you don't want my money

Now i don't buy anything nestle due to the harm they do in developing countries

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 20/03/2022 15:30

At the time I honestly couldn't give two shiny shites about the advertising.

And I love a raisin and biscuit yorkie.

Terfydactyl · 20/03/2022 15:30

I never bought one after the advert. I was a simple child though and probably thought I wasnt allowed to eat one.

I have been given one recently and God it tastes crap.

Lamerexo · 20/03/2022 15:31

TBH Yorkie has been owned by Nestlé since 1988 anyway, so anyone not buying one because of their slogan probably bought a Kit kat, milkybar, or whatever other chocolate Nestlé makes so its no difference to them really.

3peassuit · 20/03/2022 15:32

The biscuit and raisin Yorkie was lovely. Proper chocolate, no palm oil then. I remember way back in the 60s , MFI used to use the line “ it’s so easy, even a man could do it” for their self assembly furniture.

TheNumberfaker · 20/03/2022 15:32

I think I might have bought Yorkies a few times as a teenager but stopped buying any Nestle products as soon as I found out about how they sold formula in other part of the world. Only just started to but any Nestle products within the last year or so. Never bought them when that campaign was on.

InvisibleDragon · 20/03/2022 15:35

I used to love the raisin and biscuit one. Saw the "not for girls" and when I was about 12 and I don't think I've eaten one since.

RodiganReed · 20/03/2022 15:36

It was so obviously ironic, I was a raging little feminist teenager at the time and even I found it funny.

BootsAndRoots · 20/03/2022 15:39

Just done a Google search for it, and it appears that Yorkie bars really annoyed Pink News, so all good in my books.

MrsGHarrison87 · 20/03/2022 15:44

I don't really like them so don't buy them but wouldn't let that put me off if I wanted one. It's a tasteless joke, they arent banning women from eating them. I don't care.

tkwal · 20/03/2022 15:44

The chocolate always made me feel a bit sick, maybe that was because I was a girl ( lady /woman) with more refined tastes 😃
