Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Right now? If I saw a male in my single sex space I would complain. What would you do? How do you treat that, or should women just never say anything about predatory males in our spaces?

I think we're supposed to tut and move on...
DomesticatedZombie · 06/03/2022 17:38

Ah. Or avert our eyes, was that Laurie Penny's advice? Just not look and mind our own business?

DomesticatedZombie · 06/03/2022 17:40

And teach our daughters the same, I seem to recall. I shall have a word with my daughter. If she sees a man with his penis out in the swimming pool changing rooms, she should say nothing, and just look away and mind her own business. She should never, ever make a comment that might upset his feelings.

Got it.

DoobryWhatsit · 06/03/2022 17:47

that's a) not something trans women should be blamed for or carry the weight of

@CatherinaJTV do you believe that the majority of perfectly pleasant, harmless men should "carry the weight" of the crimes of the few? Or should we just let all men into all women's spaces, because most of them are good guys?

Genuinely, I don't think this whole debate is actually a trans debate at all. The real question is whether or not we still need single sex spaces, or whether it's an outdated concept. Either we do away with single sex spaces altogether, or we keep them, but it makes absolutely no sense to call spaces "single sex" and then let men into them.

TheWeeDonkey · 06/03/2022 17:53

But I think Catherine I right. A person can genuinely be trans and a predator at the same time.

Just like a person can genuinely be Catholic and a predator or a teacher or a doctor or a police officer or a sports coach, or a film producer or a famous celebrity or looking for love and be a predator at the same time.

A lot of predators use their position to access their victim of choice, I don't see why we should assume trans identified people are any different.

Yes, absolutely agree.

nomoremsniceperson · 06/03/2022 19:39

"Trans women have been sharing our spaces legally for well over a decade"

What a staggeringly disingenuous comment. The amount of transwomen, and what the term even means, has changed massively over said decade, which you of course know very well, as do we.

We're not stupid so don't insult our intelligence.

*number

and I don't think the number has changed. Just the visibility (cf that left handedness graph, I am sure you all know). There'll be literature, but I am off to dinner and a quiet evening. Good night.

Menstrualcycledisplayteam · 06/03/2022 19:51

I think Cath's argument is "predators are going to rape you anyway, so stop wasting time making it harder for them".

DomesticatedZombie · 06/03/2022 19:54

So, you're not going to answer my question? A shame.

LigandBrigand · 06/03/2022 20:11

I agree. The study I posted also doesn’t say that the males did not have genuine dysphoria.

I agree with this too.

The use of semantics to distract from and minimise the fact the males, whether trans or not, are overwhelmingly more likely than females to be sexual offenders is disgraceful.

OldCrone · 06/03/2022 20:13

There is probably some truth in this. The men who used to be called crossdressers, who would hide this in the privacy of their own homes, or amongst a small group of consenting adults, are now out and about in their "women's clothes" and demanding access to women-only spaces.

Tryagainplease · 06/03/2022 20:38

Can someone explain something to me please? I will preface by saying I am new to this debate and still learning.

You can change gender, but you can’t change sex. Therefore, if spaces are segregated on sex (and not gender) doesn’t that mean that whatever you identify as, you should only have access to the space assigned to your actual sex??

TheMarzipanDildo · 06/03/2022 20:49

No, no-one has to pretend to be anything to be an abuser. But joining a sacred caste who ‘would never do anything wrong’ and which has certain privileges (access to women’s spaces in the case of trans women, authority/power to arrest in the case of police officers, respectable religiosity for priests...) serves as a protection against being caught, and often provides access to the most vulnerable potential victims. This is why safeguarding exists.

Yes. But trans rights activists at the moment want spaces to be segregated on the basis of gender instead.
