Being discussed on radio 4 soon.

Seems SW and the Good Law Project are trying to remove the independence of the EHRC. At least in part it seems due to their intervention in Scotland.

Interview with SW coming up in the next hour

Good for Trevor.

ViceLikeBlip · 11/02/2022 17:53

NK asking "why have the EHRC suddenly changed their minds?"

  1. because "it will never happen" has now been quite conclusively proven to be "of course it happens".

  2. because of NK herself going on about how same-sex attraction is bigoted, which has lost Stonewall a lot of credibility.

Charley50 · 11/02/2022 20:42

Complained to BBC too. Awful biased reporting. And stuck in the Health & Education section.

mammajustkilledagnat · 11/02/2022 20:48

From the TImes article
The coalition wrote: “The EHRC’s stance seeks to strip trans people of legal protections and poses a grave threat to the ability of trans people to participate in daily life with dignity and respect.”

hmmm? I would argue that the coalition's stance seeks to strip women (and men) of their legal protections and poses a grave threat to the ability of women(and men) to participate in daily life with dignity and respect.
Oh, the fucking irony of that statement.

delurkasaurus · 11/02/2022 21:29

Also from The Times:

"Marcial Boo, the chief executive of the commission, said the coalition had the wrong target. “The EHRC has the power to prosecute people and companies that discriminate against trans people. We have done so,” Boo said.

“Instead of criticising the statutory regulator that exists to protect the rights of everyone in Britain, campaign groups should work with us to identify discrimination against LGBT people so we can take action together to stop it.”"

  1. They've used their powers to task people to task
  2. Show us the evidence of discrimination and we will act

Trevor Philips, former head of the CRE AND EHRC has weighed in. I always liked him.

I like him too CoupDeGrass. His columns in the Times are a beacon of rationality, insight and sanity.

We can influence the government, to an extent, by voting and by more direct actions where we can give feedback. How would one even begin to influence the UN or WHO or whatever? I really have no clue how it could be done, other than through a massive and well-documented change in public opinion, that’s so obvious it can no longer be ignored.

Unherd has had some articles about the Council of Europe and trans issues in recent months. It's really important to think about the ways citizens of nations have, or don't have, influence over these kind of international bodies that set agendas or targets or best practices, etc.

fromorbit · 12/02/2022 02:41

@NecessaryScene

organisations like the European Council said that LGBT rights in the UK were no better than Russia, Hungary and Poland.

Good article on that by Debbie Hayton in Unherd: Stop saying the UK is transphobic

(Title seems to have been changed from "pretending" to a more neutral "saying" at some point since Martina Navratilova tweeted it. URL is still "pretending").

Agreed I make this point earlier. And Trevor Phillips who was at the heart of this sector has pointed out this case is a loser.

It is going to backfire massively especially as when the case fails it will be taken within the UK as international approval of the EHRC position.

Most importantly it will make the idea of EHRC changing their position later much much more difficult.

It will make EHRC staff in general more inclined to see TRAs as biased and unreasonable.

We don't even need to crowd fund defence as the government will pay for it.

Well, this sounds fantastic.

I agree Zombie.

I tried to find the actual complaint yesterday. Stonewall’s website just says how many signatories there were, and in various places lists all of them (Steph’s Place etc) and sometimes just the bigger brands (Mermaids). They invite me to sign a petition endorsing if. They keep mentioning how many pages it has.
Have they actually published their dossier?

DevonTF · 12/02/2022 09:43

Stonewall had them onside for a long time - describing the chair as an advocate is very concerning. They should not be advocates - but totally impartial. The fact that Stonewall were confident enough to send this letter is very telling of how arrogant they are. They are now throwing their toys out - no longer dictating.

Apparently Twitter has now removed the blue tick from the EHRC. They are such clowns, Human rights legislation etc was born in tragedy it's now descending into farce.

KittenKong · 12/02/2022 11:27

Showing their true colours then.

Twitter has removed the blue tick from the EHRC for not giving in to the tantrums of TRAs?

Artichokeleaves · 12/02/2022 11:37

It's so childish and petty it's actually funny in a very sad kind of way. It's like that AA Milne poem about "Evangeline, I only said, I didn't mean, I only meant your hands weren't clean!"

The EHRC have only said that other people's rights matter too. That's it. That's all.

But this is permitting me to demonstrate to my MP that I really wasn't exaggerating when I said the narrative is being set that anyone not vigorously and loudly sacrificing female humans under the TQ+ bus of male need is evil and shouldn't be allowed.

Naked male supremacism. With dummies being spat in all directions.

I thought that was Emmeline!

Imnobody4 · 12/02/2022 11:47

Sorry fake news. Apparently they never had a blue tick (could have sworn they did though!)

Bet they are gutted! (bahhahawwaha)

Thanks, it did seem a tad ridiculous. Why doesn't the EHRC have one?
