Unisex toilets, I just don’t want to see men piss

Unisex toilets with the all genders sign on it. Door is closed. Walk in assuming it’s all cubicles and it’s urinals and then a cubicle once you walk past the urinals. I just don’t want to walk past men pissing. Doubt they want me there either. I go to find another toilet. Slowly open the door and it’s just cubicles. Phew. Except the sinks do look a bit like urinals so I wasn’t sure for a second. I have never ever had to worry about which toilet I’m in and if there’s gonna be men pissing while I walk past them. So I go out and read the signs again on the toilets. The one I’ve just been in says Stalls. The other says Urinals and Stalls. Didn’t notice that to start with because I’m not used to having to read a description of what’s in a toilet before I go in it. I’m fact, it’s the first time I’ve ever had to do that.

Sympathies LittleSnakes Sadly the type of men who do want to see / hear women and girls piss have been allowed to influence society to the extent that their demands get prioritised over safeguarding and the rights of women and girls. Sad

LittleSnakes · 05/02/2022 18:42

It was ducking annoying. I had to have a rant to my husband when I got back from the toilet. He’s a normal nice person so said he doesn’t want women walking past him while he takes a piss either. It’s like an anxiety dream. Today was just dads and their small kids going to the loo. A family event. But obvs for those who do get off on it, it’s a perfect opportunity

Is that stuff even legal? I thought unisex toilets were supposed to be fully enclosed cubicles only? (or is it just a guidance?)

I’ve had a few men say the same. Tiny minority wants this.
SomeOwlsCoo · 05/02/2022 18:59

Let's face it
Urinals + stalls = men
Just stalls = women and men.

cabbageking · 05/02/2022 19:03

Unisex means all cubicles.

TibetanTerrah · 05/02/2022 19:06

Id be interested to know if both sets had sanitary bins and machines. Some do but I've come across places that slap a sign on the door to be "inclusive" but actually completely forget about women when it comes to this stuff. Grosses men out too which is a bonus with pushback Wink

SquishySquirmy · 05/02/2022 19:07

I think a lot of men don't want women to see them piss.
So they would use the stalls.
Women would also use the "just stalls" option.
Which would surely result in longer queues for "just stalls", and probably worse conditions in the "just stalls".
To please who??? The tiny minority that want this, compared to the many who really, really don't!

IvyTwines · 05/02/2022 19:09

I wish the men would speak up about it too! They don't get called 't*rfs' or 'transphobes' or told to 'be kind' or choke on penises, and they actually get listened to by those in power.

LittleSnakes · 05/02/2022 19:09

Didn’t even think to look for sanitary bins. Maybe unisex isn’t the right word because one of the toilets definitely had urinals. Both doors had that all genders symbol on. The circle with the cross at the bottom and then the bits sticking up. Only underneath that did it explain what was in the toilet. I agree with the above of cubicles and urinals is mens, cubicles is men and women.

OP posts:
cabbageking · 05/02/2022 19:11

The idea is they are gender-neutral
Not designed for one sex which urinals are.
They should be no opportunities to see anyones privates which means no urinals.

LittleSnakes · 05/02/2022 19:13

Well I guess they’ve missed the point then. Because these had urinals in them.

I'm a bloke and I would feel very uncomfortable with these loos.
I thought unisex loos had to be all enclosed cubicles.

RussiasGreatestLoveMachine · 05/02/2022 19:15

Went skiing in July in a well known (well, for us) resort in Queenstown, and there were two sets of toilets in the cafe. One for everyone. And one for men.

Nobody noticed or cared.

Why is this OK? Why are women - who’ve always traditionally be entitled to our own single-sex places - having to be the ones to shove up, compromise and make room for everyone, while men are allowed to have their own single-sex space? Confused

I feel like there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it.

MidsomerMurmurs · 05/02/2022 19:15

@cabbageking

Unisex means all cubicles.
“Unisex” means mixed sex. “Gender neutral” means mixed sex.
LittleSnakes · 05/02/2022 19:18

I also thought that unisex had to be all enclosed.

The law is regularly ignored LittleSnakes. Partly because we have organisations like Stonewall gaslighting organisations into using their preferred version of the law that removes single sex spaces from women and partly because anyone daring to voice concerns about the safety of women or children is abused as a bigot or transphobe.
ThatsWhenTheCannibalismStarted · 05/02/2022 19:28

Can you send them a complaint? There was a thread here not too long ago where a woman had been to a venue that had put new signs on the doors so it was a free for all, much like the place you went to. She flagged the legislation with them and they were very apologetic and changed them back. They said they didn't know the regs and thanked her for informing them.

IvyTwines · 05/02/2022 19:29

What would the legal situation be for going in and removing the unisex signs on what were formerly female only spaces, and replacing them with single sex signage again? And, given the way the police are treating women at the moment, we get some men to do it? If they wore hi-viz jackets and carried power tools they probably wouldn't even be challenged.

NumberTheory · 05/02/2022 19:33

@LittleSnakes

I also thought that unisex had to be all enclosed.
I believe that, while there are rules about separate toilet provision for men and women in the workplace and (for girls and boys) in schools that mean any mixed-sex provision should be fully enclosed cubicles, there is no legal requirement to provide separate toilets to the general public.
LittleSnakes · 05/02/2022 19:51

I didn’t know the legislation around it all. I was just pissed off to have a perfectly normal experience of going for a wee in a pub be interrupted by wondering which loo I should go in.

OP posts:
Sophoclesthefox · 05/02/2022 19:54

One for everyone. And one for men

Doesn’t that just say it all?

I’m with you, OP. I don’t care to share toilet facilities with men, males or anyone in possession of a penis. I just don’t. And I’m fed up of this perfectly legitimate preference being bulldozed over because a small minority of people feel otherwise.

Sophoclesthefox · 05/02/2022 19:58

How do the facilities described in the OP work for

  • people with a visual impairment? Clear signage is a must, not hard to read text.
  • people with English as a second language, who don’t know what “stalls” and “urinals” are?
  • people with learning difficulties who also don’t know what “stalls” and “urinals” are?
  • women from certain religious or cultural backgrounds who can’t share space where they are partially undressing with males?

It’s not really “inclusive” at all, is it?

IcakethereforeIam · 05/02/2022 20:21

If they forget to put sanitary bins in the cubicles they may have constantly clogged toilets. Which would be a pity.

Do they have in the UK those onstreet urinals that just covered between the knees and the chest? I seem to remember an outcry over one designed so guys were urinating into a flowerbed, or did I dream it? OP I sympathise, it would make me uncomfortable, I'd have to be very desperate to use one. Wouldn't have let my daughters in unaccompanied.

LittleSnakes · 05/02/2022 21:53

I also didn’t really know what a stall was. I call them cubicles. It was only coz of the context that I knew what it meant. Don’t know about flower bed pissing. They do have those urinals in city centres sometimes.
