They've been rapped on the knuckles for making dodgy claims in their patronising adverts. Apparently Oatly have a very tenuous grasp of the concept of facts.

Ha de fucking ha.

@SirSamuelVimes

If you google Oatley Share price, a graph should pop up and you can view over a day, week, months etc.

Summary: last May it was over 28p. Now less than 7p!

SirSamuelVimes · 27/01/2022 14:59

Excellent, thanks @Leafstamp
Haha! Good. I wrote them about their stupid patronising article.

Here's the backstory for anyone unaware: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4152662-Oatly-takes-out-ad-in-The-Guardian-to-mock-desperately-out-of-touch-parents-about-pronouns-in-email-signatures?pg=2
Thanks for linking. I completely missed this! In any case, I gave them a long trial but I found their products to be vile. That includes the much famed barista. I bet your cafe would go out of business at record speed if you started serving that.

Livelifeinthebuslane · 27/01/2022 17:58

Asda now does barista oat milk, DD said it tastes the same as Oatly and says it has potassium iodide in it, which doesn't make it sound v attractive but I guess that's fortified.

I too am delighted to be able to swap. I was actually an early adopter of oat milk even though I'm an old out of touch gimmer til I decided I didn't like it and it was nutritionally pretty bad. Now I just buy for DD.

BabyInTheJungle · 27/01/2022 18:13

I buy the M&S chocolate oat milk for my 5yo DS as a treat. Am I doing him more harm than good? In my head I somehow thought it was vaguely healthy...

Oat milk is likely fortified with calcium, vitamin d so not completely 'unhealthy'. Full fat milk is going to have more calories so if that is a concern, it's healthier. (Although five year olds should have a reasonable calorie intake and a lot of us struggle getting enough into them.) The only milk alternative I know of that meets most of the nutritional needs that cow's milk does is alpro growing up milk. It's fortified especially for children's mineral needs. However, it doesn't have omega 3, but as long as your child has other sources of this or a multivitamin, it's not a problem.

The thing about cows milk is it's a full meal for a rapidly growing calf, so it's going to have all the nutrients in it naturally like breast milk does. Not drinking cows milk and using oat milk etc is fine as long as you make sure you get the nutrients in the rest of the diet. And not all milks are equally nutritional value so it's worth shopping around to find something that covers most bases. (Omega 3 never seems to be used probably because it spoils food quickly).

As for chocolate milk, I occasionally give my toddler the strawberry soya ones. No they are not as good as the growing up milk, but they do nicely as a treat.

BabyInTheJungle · 27/01/2022 20:11

Thanks, that's really helpful. I have to admit I bought it once on a whim without researching it, he liked it, so I continued to buy it every so often. He does have a great and very varied diet otherwise (but such a sweet tooth!).

I haven't bought Oatly since the whole pronouns nonsense, the market is so varied nowadays there is a lot of choice out there.

SuPerDoPer · 27/01/2022 20:12

Most oat milk (including oatly) isn't gluten free so all the poncy coffee shops using oat milk and not properly cleaning their milk steamer are making it a no go area for coeliacs. I find oat milk aficionados tend to be very dismissive of this issue - it's poison to my DD but of course its so trendy that we just have to put up with it.

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 27/01/2022 20:18

Yes that must be annoying. Although they are just as bad for milk allergy sufferers not using separate jugs for dairy.

@WellThatsMeScrewed M and S one has more iodine in it. I will give it a try.

That's interesting, does anyone know if M&S almond milk contains iodine? (I know the eco cred of almond is crap, but it's the only milk I can stomach in tea).

SusannaQueen · 28/01/2022 10:15

Answering my own question, yes apparently it does, but is unfortunately 4x as calorific as my current almond milkHmm

SusannaQueen · 28/01/2022 10:19

And I take the calorific remark back, it's only very slightly more.

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 28/01/2022 17:18

To be fair, eco or not, almond milk is pretty nice.
I do think that being eco needs to be achievable and people need to make the changes they can and not beat themselves up for the ones they can't.
I gave myself a very hard time because I couldn't breastfeed, partly for the eco side and had to switch to disposable nappies due to baby health issue. Looking back, it's not work getting worked up about those things as long as you make positive changes where possible.

SunnyDelite · 28/01/2022 18:34

I'd forgotten about that article! I don't drink oat milk so have no particular interest in it, but the article was so very offensive and patronising in so many ways! It's not children who buy the products so why insult the people who do?... Bad commercial strategy....

Spellfish · 29/01/2022 09:48

It worked out well for me - I swopped from Oatly to oat milk in bottles from the milkman. No more guilt about the amount of Oatly packaging, the glass bottle gets reused. And it arrives in my doorstep three times a week. The oat milk isn’t quite as good at not splitting in coffee as Oatly barista, but I’m so much happier with the glass bottles that I haven’t bought Oatly since.

KittenKong · 29/01/2022 09:50

I don’t drink it but others I’m the house do. I started making it at home - it’s just oats and water!

Scrowy · 29/01/2022 11:05

The back of the Farmers Guardian this week suggests that Oatly made a loss of £104million in 2021

Obviously the farmers have a different reason to be discussing it but the recent advertising campaign definitely didn't go down well with them.

Thanks Scowy I haven't seen the latest Farmers Guardian, that's great news. Their last few advertising campaigns appear to have been counter productive.

pickingdaisies · 30/01/2022 15:55

I'm a bit gutted - oatly barista is my favourite milk for tea and coffee. Somehow the pronoun debacle passed me by. But this has given me the kick up the backside I needed to find a more sustainable milk. Must have a go at making my own - it hadn't even occurred to me, and we go through loads of oats. So thanks everyone for the heads-up!

KimikosNightmare · 30/01/2022 16:05

Can you cook with almond milk? If I make a white sauce or a cheese sauce or a rice pudding will it taste the same as if made from cow's milk?
WorriedMumsDontSleep · 30/01/2022 16:34

IME oat milk is best for replicating cows milk, for Italian etc. Coconut milk for oriental. Almond, coconut or oat work best for pudding, cakes and biscuits.
I used to cook a white sauce with almond milk, worked ok but does have an edge.

SusannaQueen · 30/01/2022 16:36

@KimikosNightmare

I do, but I don't like the taste of cows milk so I'm maybe not the best judge. I use Almond Breeze as the taste of different brands vary. I've never had it split either, but coconut milk does sometimes.

KimikosNightmare · 30/01/2022 18:47

Apparently the Guardian and Oatly think their ad campaign was a roaring success. advertising.theguardian.com/labs/projects/parenting-your-parents-with-oatly

I live with a teenager, so I'm quite accustomed to being patronised, but this gave me rage. We'd already switched to delivery of oat milk in glass bottles from the dairy anyway. Good. Smug, patronising gits.
