Sex matters: government needs to stand up for women

Feel exactly as @BlibBlabBlob said, have never voted Tory in my life and never intended to, but this article sums it all up perfectly in a nutshell. Excellent, sensible and clear article. I'm genuinely struggling with who to vote for as I can't vote Labour whilst they continue to throw women and girls under the bus (and it's not like Greens or Lib Dems are any better on this issue).

Needmoresleep · 06/01/2022 08:30

I suspect that it is less about being Tory, but about JD-P being a normal intelligent woman with real life experience and a desire to contribute constructively to society.

She was good pre-Boris when she held a ministerial portfolio that included teenage mental health. (Indeed I wonder what happened to her promised study on ROGD.)

We have some good women, including in the HOL. JD-P, Baroness Nicholson, Baroness Tanni Grey, Baroness Kishwer Falkner, Liz Truss, Kemi Badenoch, Rosie Duffield.

Being GC is not an obvious career move for a politician. I would prefer to see more in all parties whose politics come from a place of honesty and common sense, even if I, with my different background and experience, disagree with them.

I hope JKR can be given what is needed to sit in the HOL.

It's like a grown up has calmly entered the room, turned the TV down, hushed a screaming toddler, pulled a baby away from the Lego it was about to eat and cleaned up some sick.

Helleofabore · 06/01/2022 08:51

Jackie has been brave for a very long time. Just like Rosie Duffield. They hold fast against the abuse they get to uphold women’s rights.

Thank you to them both.

Datun · 06/01/2022 08:53

Good article. Down to earth, rational, obvious.

I'd like the addressing of the issue to also take into account the terrible persecution of women who have spoken up about maintaining their rights, too.

Its not enough to sanction sex segregation when even talking about it makes women a target.

ArabellaScott · 06/01/2022 09:11

Excellent.

I feel like sending this to my MP and MSPs.

Carriemac · 06/01/2022 09:27

I'm
Sending the article to
My MP

CasparBloomberg · 06/01/2022 09:37

My MP is Caroline Noakes who I thought was excellent as a constituency MP and on womens issues, plus willing to stand up to cabinet … right up until her committee reported. Hope she takes on this counter to her committees report and flips right back.

highame · 06/01/2022 09:50

I am watching the US with interest. If the Democrats have a bad time in November, it will be, by and large, because centrists see the hard left of the Democrats holding sway. If Republicans take a lot of seats, it might make our 'progressive' parties have a re-think. After all, Sir Keir is benefitting from a slide in popularity of Boris Johnson, not the Labour party being fit for government. The jury's still out and I think women will have a lot to say in the lead up to the next election.

Bit of divergence but worth saying

teawamutu · 06/01/2022 09:53

What's that quote about not being able to reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into?

Fits dear Caroline to a tee, I suspect.

ANewCreation · 06/01/2022 10:00

Exactly, no point holding your nose and voting Tory if your MP's views are more in line with Caroline Nokes' rather than Jackie Doyle-Price's.

Excellent article but quite amusing that the otherwise spot-on Jackie Doyle-Price calls it the Equalities rather than the Equality Act throughout!

"Sex is the biggest determinant of our health. Various conditions have very different pathologies in men and women so it is vital that their medical records are accurate so that patients can be called for their crucial screenings.

Yet the NHS’s confused approach allows medical records to refer to gender rather than sex, putting this at risk. Stonewall’s political agenda is literally putting people’s health at risk."

I've just filled in an NHS covid vaccine consent form for my daughter asking for 'gender at birth' - choices are 'male', 'female' 'prefer not to say' and 'unspecified'.
🙄

This is how we end up with 'woman' and 'female' both as gender terms and people being able to say 'oh, but the NHS agrees that female is a gender term...

A spot-on comment too: -

"Stonewall get millions from the government. Let them set up services for transgender people. Surprising that they haven't already given that Stonewall says that they are the most vulnerable group on the planet. Really? And yet you provide no services for them?"

MidnightMoor · 06/01/2022 10:01

I'm planning on buying physical copies (have online sub) and sending the article cutting to my MSPs and MPs by post who haven't yet responded to my emails.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/01/2022 11:09

It's a commendably clear and comprehensive piece.

ArabellaScott · 06/01/2022 12:12

That's a good quote, and could be applied to many feelings-based positions.

Yes this, she really has stood up for women as has Rosie.
stickygotstuck · 06/01/2022 12:27

Excellent stuff.

This comment is what I've beenwondering for years -

The bigger question for the rule of law in a democracy is how did a political pressure group like Stonewall get to write regulations for public and private sector organisations to follow?

LilithRises · 06/01/2022 13:02

Yes, yes, yes! What a refreshing article - someone who clearly gets it.

Thank you

Stonewall have promoted a dangerous and absurd ideology

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/01/2022 14:32

I really like Jackie, I'm not a Tory and I'm completely disillusioned with Labour but I would vote for either her or Rosie Duffield if they were standing in my constituency. For their integrity and clear thinking.

Blackandwhitehorse · 06/01/2022 17:57

A brilliant clear summary.

poorchurchmouse · 06/01/2022 17:59

Wish she was my MP!

CruellaDeVilla · 06/01/2022 18:00

Brilliant, good for her

doublemonkey · 06/01/2022 18:09

Excellent. So concise and clear. Definitely a vote winner.

WallaceinAnderland · 06/01/2022 18:15

Absolutely fantastic. So true and sensible. We have come a long way since the 'no debate' days. It's astonishing how arrogant Stonewall are and how far they have pushed their agenda. If Tory government back this they will get my vote in a flash. There is nothing more important in politics right now imo.

RenGreen · 06/01/2022 22:39

I’m really impressed by the comments and the overall agreement with the article in the comments section of The Times. If makes absolute common sense.
