What has Stewart Lee done?

I see lots of people on Twitter are slagging off Stewart Lee because he listed a lot of non-woke folk like Graham Linehan in his "pedal bin" of people he doesn't like. What is his public stance on the Trans Rights campaign though? I've not heard/read anything but I've probably missed it.

I've always found him refreshingly unique. He makes me laugh anyway. His stage climbing efforts are worth the ticket price alone! So I wonder what has gone so wrong?

KittenKong · 05/01/2022 14:56

Desperate to be relevant to a ‘noo audience’ (who, let’s face it, won’t cough up for tickets and are way too high maintenance).

NotDavidTennant · 05/01/2022 15:08

who wants to sit through a 2 hour ramble about why women are nasty and why they are wrong, stupid, overreacting, demonstrating why he is so wonderful (and so much more intelligent),

See this is the kind of stuff I don't get. You're winding yourself up over a version of his show that only exists in your head.

KittenKong · 05/01/2022 15:12

I’ve seen him a few times now - I know what his shows can be like. I assume this is him creating some material for the show.

lovelyweathertoday · 05/01/2022 16:30
@lovelyweathertoday - I have read I think two James Bond books and in one of them Ian Fleming wrote 'the sweet tang of rape' after one of Bond's sexual encounters.

I read no more.
Ew, that's revolting. I haven't watched all the bond films, but as far as I can remember Bond is just very attractive to women, not a rapist.

Almost certainly. Doesn't make it OK to harass and intimidate people along the way.

It's a weird thing to assume given that the list is buried at the bottom of his newsletter and most likely no-one would have noticed it if Graham Linehan hadn't taken umbrage and made a fuss.

Cool. Good on him. We all know how reasonable his new audience will be. Let’s hope he’s not said anything ever that could be construed as offensive under a modern lens. Or decides to voice any opinions in future that are not approved.

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch

I saw him about four years back, in that little theatre off Leicester Square.

Honestly, I found it so funny, I nearly had a full-on asthma attack. I think he's a genius.

Which is why this is shit.

I think we might have been at the same performance! I remember someone laughing so hard they were gasping.

I agree. Disappointing isn't it?

DeckardK · 05/01/2022 19:01

I too used to like him, but haven't for years now as he is too sneery - DH still really likes him, though he goes to see him with a friend these days.

I notice he has the women in red on his list and half of Glinners name, probably a juvenile joke Hmm

ScreamingMeMe · 05/01/2022 19:25

I used to like Fist of Fun. Tried to watch Lee's Comedy Vehicle (I think it was called), and it just bored the shit out of me (and I was still in my " The Left can do no wrong, Tories are evil" phase then).

I do wonder how much of a line there is between his stage persona and his real self.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 05/01/2022 19:30

i remember going to see him and finding him pretty shit

he attempted to get the audience to give a round of applause for the IRA for some reason

no one did

he looked like a twat

KittenKong · 05/01/2022 19:38

Reminds me of a stage hypnotist.

That's a curious form of wording. Why shouldn't GL "make a fuss" at the way colleagues and acquaintances have treated him? I'd be fucking raging. Wouldn't you?
miri1985 · 05/01/2022 23:23

Neither of these is probably worth their own thread but since both are mentioned in the Lee list; Dave Chapelle got denounced by a friend (Patton Oswalt) this weekend and Glinner was stood up for by his long term co-creator/writer Arthur Matthews

All I can remember was tedious rambling about how disappointed his mother was that he wasn't as funny or successful as Tom O' Connor.

No doubt it was all deeply subtle and ironic and I'm just too thick to get it but it was utterly pointless.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 06/01/2022 00:01

The Patton Oswald thing was utterly ridiculous. That photo of him pretending to be writing a thoughtful essay and staring into the distance. Fuck sake. But he knows his audience, I’ll give him that.

KimikosNightmare · 06/01/2022 00:05

I've been to, and liked, most of his gigs except the Joe Pasquale one which I didn't find funny

Is the Joe Pasquale one a variation of the Tom O' Connor one? Faux self pity about how he's not as funny as a mainstream but now past it 70s/80s comedian but actually smugly sure that he's much better?

If it is, it's pretty low- hanging fruit isn't it?

BraveBananaBadge · 06/01/2022 07:21

Can't access the whole thing but that's great from Arthur Matthews, miri.

Patton got absolutely dogpiled by TRAs on twitter a few years ago, for posting a video of himself finishing reading the last Harry Potter book to his daughter. IIRC, it was something started by his wife, who had recently died.

I remember tellling some TRAs it wasnt the time or place for this, but they didn't give the tiniest shit. That incident will have taught Patton how relentless, unforgiving and self-centred TRAs are.

No, it's the "gaping arsehole of Christ" one. Don't try and imagine the story/ joke- you won't Grin I quite liked the Tom O'Connor bit. Comedy is hugely subjective and I'm don't really think getting it or not has much to do with intelligence, it's what tickles you personally.

Even without all of this and being a fan of SLee I would definitely have cringed at his long "cultural" list thing that includes highlights of things he enjoyed eating.

There's a guy on Twitter on the bin bit of the list who doesn't know what he's done wrong - he's had metal health crises these past years and has done a couple of funny YouTube music bits, been in the radio, all good-natured. It really feels like punching down from top popular comedian Stewart Lee.

potniatheron · 06/01/2022 08:57

So bascially, he's put all the talented people, people who've actually created things and accomplished things, into the pedal bin. And all the people who've done nothing, created nothing, just screamed on Twitter, on the pedestal.

Ooooooh-kaaaaay.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 06/01/2022 10:12

I'm not criticising Nimco Ali's activism, however she is firmly in the TWAW camp. So surely should have escaped SL's 'red pen' list?

Although the 'but' in the attached Tweet makes me think that she doesn't genuinely believe a word of it; and is merely protecting herself against the rabid TRAs.

I don't think anyone truly believes it though, do they??

She's no doubt seen the way that Hibo Wadere is treated on Twitter for disagreeing with that nonsense.

What has Stewart Lee done?
RoyalCorgi · 06/01/2022 10:20

I saw that and thought it was really funny.

Yes, humour is subjective...

I do think that it would have been better if glinner had left well alone. No one would have taken any notice otherwise. Now people are going round wondering what they've done to deserve being on the list when there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it. Julie Burchill has written a whole article for the Spectator about how she doesn't care that Stewart Lee doesn't like her. And obviously Lee isn't going to explain it, he's just going to sit at home chuckling over it and feeling superior to everyone.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 06/01/2022 10:22

Not only Hibo Wardere. Jana Cornell, another campaigner and survivor, gave up on using twitter all together because of the trans activists. I saw the stuff she was getting publicly tagged in. There were abusive teens and adults showing off to their mates by tagging her in the most disgusting stuff like videos of men being murdered, and piling in to tell her that FGM victims didn't count as women. Angry
