"There will be some instances where we do use the term ‘women’. For example, if we’re referencing research that only included cis women, or did not distinguish on the basis of gender identity."

Why on earth could they not have said natal or biological women. Cis is not a word. Highly offensive.

We are now "Women+" according to Bodyform.

And funnily enough scientific studies that study menstruation will only study females. Coz like biology. Arrrghhhh

Made a million times worse by the fact that all these brands help girls in poorer countries with no access to any or enough sanitary products by sending packets and taking contributions . Its the worst kind of dishonesty imo. They know full well which sex has to drop out of school at puberty.

HebeMumsnet · 05/01/2022 13:06

Afternoon, everyone. Just letting you know we've moved this over to our 'sex and gender' board.

MangoBiscuit · 05/01/2022 13:11

What's wrong with "Women+"? Would that not just mean women, plus anyone else that doesn't identify as a woman, but still needs to be included.

(Anyone calling me cis can fuck right off though.)

GreenWhiteViolet · 05/01/2022 13:16

Disappointing but not unexpected from Bodyform.

If anyone is looking for alternatives, after the nonsense with Always a while ago, I bought cloth pads from Honour Your Flow after they were recommended by someone here on MN. I was impressed! They're comfortable, absorbent, and have lasted very well so far.

@MabelTheCow

So you object to the term cis? What term would you prefer they use or are you angry that they are being inclusive to people who do not identify as women even though they menstruate?
Woman on it's own has always been a good description of me.
TInkyWlnky · 05/01/2022 14:06

@CorrBlimeyGG

Hundreds of thousands of women living in poverty in the UK, yet this is what you're bothered about.
I'm sure it doesnt really come as a surprise to you that women are allowed to be concerned about more than one topic at a time.

The but don't you have better things to worry about trope really doesn't work anymore.

The word woman will do. Women do not require a prefix in order to make them a subset of their own sex class. They do not need to be called a person who menstruates or any other dehumanising language either.

As a compromise women and transmen can be used. The language women use to describe themselves does not need to be changed to incorporate a minority who have chosen to opt out of womanhood. Opting out does not give the right to remove the descriptors of womanhood, in order to be included back in again.

I'm so glad this has been moved to the Sex and Gender board. It would be utterly appalling to subject people to reading this type of thing on other boards.

I mean, they might Find Out Things. Or Get Angry. Or even Be Radicalised by Mumsnet.

Hide them away, quick (thanks so much to those who reported the thread too, we are always grateful to the wonderful people who police the Mumsnet boards to make sure people don't read too many opinions).

Period poverty? Because we are discussing periods, food poverty is a whole other subject perhaps start your own thread?
TInkyWlnky · 05/01/2022 14:33

I don't think they've done a very good job of trying to hide things away despite their best efforts. After all, it's spilling out everywhere. Everybody knows. That's what happens when one tries to squeeze too much in one small place. Eventually it all just explodes. Information scattered far and wide. Exposed. For everyone to see 😲

Mochudubh · 05/01/2022 18:51

So whose bodies are they formed for? I'm old enough to remember the skydiving ad.

Whaaaoooohhhh, Bodyfoh-horm,
Shaped for confidence, shaped for comfort.
Body formed for Yooooooooooooo!

@MNHQ is there a reason you moved this thread to the naughty corner that is Sex and Gender but didn’t, for example, move the thread in AIBU that’s about “24 Hours in Police Custody” to Telly Addicts, despite the fact you know it’s in the ‘wrong’ section because you’ve added a content warning to the title?

FFS, I was just about to come on and say Lil-lets make organic disposable towels, but when I went onto their website, I noticed a * next to the word ‘woman’ in their blurb and scrolled to the bottom on the page to see this:

  • Across our website we use words like ‘women’, ‘girl’ and ‘female’ but we believe language shouldn’t be a barrier and we understand that periods aren’t just for women and that not all women have periods. We want to enable people to be themselves and to choose what works for them. We believe everyone who experiences menstruation has a right to the products and information they need, without shame or stigma.
OnlyTheTitosaurusOfTheIceberg · 05/01/2022 20:41

Anyway, on topic…I use Cotton Organics, when I can get hold of them (larger branches of Boots sometimes sell them). Their website refers to “women” unashamedly, no qualifiers, no unnecessary prefixes.

Whitefire · 05/01/2022 20:42

I will continue to use Bodyform (and buy them for dd), sometimes the actual product has to win over. The term cis has crept in so much that many are not aware that many others find it offensive, trouble is many of these companies end up pleasing no-one, but we shouldn't underestimate the amount of pressure they probably would have had from certain quarters.

A mooncup is not an option, and dd does not want to use reusables or pants.

AmberRoseGold · 05/01/2022 20:48

I think Hey Girls are still sound. They say “every purchase helps U.K. girls” (they donate a pack for every pack you buy). If not I think I will be genuinely stuck tbh.

Hebe 🤦‍♀️

There's '&Sisters', which donates 10% of profits specifically to women's global health campaigns.

I feel your pain. I was using Natracare which then took a scientifically inaccurate 'intersex are neither male nor female' stance.
