Nancy Kelly and Christine Burns on Al Jazeera

I can't imagine who thought it was a good idea for Stonewall to agree to this interview, given the source of funding for Al Jazeera and the regime that sees homosexuals imprisoned or murdered for their sexual orientation.

I think Stonewall's Head if Media left or took a sabbatical recently so I'm guessing, if the post remains vacant it didn't involve a debate and ultimately Nancy Kelly who agreed it anyway. I'm completely baffled, it can't be that Nancy didn't know this can it?

@PaterPower

But why not? Isn't that the kind of place where they might want to create some level of credibility? Or create a dialogue?

You think this was broadcast in Arabic / within the borders of the ME countries?

This was purely an attempt, by Al J’s owners, to slap some pinkwash over Qatar’s deservedly appalling reputation on how their LGB community is treated.

Maybe. But AJ is a major news organization. Giving them interviews doesn't imply being happy with any particular thing they say, or the people who work there say, or what the countries they broadcast in say.

Any more than it does when anyone else gives an interview to an individual or organization.

SantaClawsServiette · 28/12/2021 13:18

@SantaClawsServiette
What's the expression for showing excessive skin in the Islamic faith?

Which participant showed no respect towards the social norms of Arabic countries?

You're asking me this because...?

334bu · 28/12/2021 15:05

Maybe. But AJ is a major news organization. Giving them interviews doesn't imply being happy with any particular thing they say, or the people who work there say, or what the countries they broadcast in say.
So when women are interviewed on Fox News about male competitors in female sports, they should not automatically be assumed to be right wing bigots, as like Stonewall being interviewed by an organisation funded by a regime which imprisons homosexuals and oppresses women, it should not be assumed that they share the broadcaster's views.

Started watching it!

My first thought was.

Who is this fella? I've not seen him or that studio before.

I watch Al Jazeera a fair bit later on at night and not seen thing like this, it's all in depth looks at eg hour documentary living in X country as a religious minority, wide news coverage of shit round world our media mentions and then forgets.

So had a dig.

CheeseMmmm · 28/12/2021 19:56

Al J have various things. Regions include US/Canada, Europe. Then there's an English language thing.

Couldn't quite work out what is what.

However,

The first story on Al J Europe section of their site is a piece about UK.

And this is about the presenter on upfront-

'Dr Marc Lamont Hill is an award-winning journalist and author and is the Steve Charles Professor of Media, Cities, and Solutions at Temple University. Hill is known for his work addressing the intersections of race, justice, politics and culture. His latest best-selling book is ‘We Still Here: Pandemics, Policing, Protest and Possibility’ which follows on the success of ‘Nobody: Casualties of America’s War on the Vulnerable from Flint to Ferguson’. Hill has received numerous prestigious awards from the US National Association of Black Journalists, GLAAD, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.'

CheeseMmmm · 28/12/2021 20:01

So unless anyone knows better, based on what seen etc.

This interview was for the English language (available to global English speakers) channel. This piece is clearly USA style.

And the Al J news we get here is the Europe channel, great journalism, in depth looks at specific cultures etc. Hard core proper stuff.

Leafstamp · 28/12/2021 20:01

@Vvvvip I believe MNHQ prefers to leave ‘false’ claims up and be argued against rather than delete them. This is the case across the site, not just this board.

As PP have said there is unlikely to be evidence of executions available. The fact is, Qatar does operate Sharia courts, and so theoretically Muslim men who practice same sex relationships could face execution.

Whether they invoke this and actually execute is secondary to the fact that it is technically possible, IMO.

CheeseMmmm · 28/12/2021 20:07

Unless gone wonky-

This would NOT be seen on TV available AL J news.

It would be seen by those watching Al J globally, English language.

That is CRAFTY as fuck.

Imo.

And my god what a cheap cheap move.

What are they aiming to achieve by having the 2 of them, talking utter bollocks (yes really nonsense), about how AWFUL nasty bigots are here. For consumption by countries/ individuals in countries who enjoy some English language news from time to time?

Is it like. We've lost control of this.
Let's see if we can get pressure from other countries shouting for removal of witches?

Pathetic. Utterly pathetic.

CheeseMmmm · 28/12/2021 20:07

Sorry not be seen on the news channel here Freeview.

CheeseMmmm · 28/12/2021 20:42

Oh gawd just read thread!

  1. What the law says and whether it's actually applied or even thought about in general.

Eg

Singapore male/male sex is illegal and law says can be two years in prison.
Wiki has more but essentially on the ground, there's not general concern.
And as long as Singapore wants to be an international corporate etc hub. I really can't see them jeopardising that.

My point is that, the theory may not meet the practice.

I'm not saying Qatar law ok any more than S'pore or any others.

I do think though. That when someone who lives in a country say it's not like that on ground.
I'd listen.
Because it's unlikely that they're lying (why?).
How likely is a poster who wants to big up this country on the net, to be knocking about on MN ?!

CheeseMmmm · 28/12/2021 20:45

So I mean saying no no nope to someone who actually knows the country.

Even if think... Erm, really?... To straight up say you're wrong is pretty strong!

In one country for work, over and over people said, oooh I wouldn't want to go to London. Too dangerous. Terrorists, loads of stabbings.
I'm from London.
They've seen the news. I live here.
Am I wrong? Sort of thing.

CheeseMmmm · 28/12/2021 20:56

Anyway.

Wiki has a page on Al Jazeera.

V interesting org.

In 2000s BBC bought 1000 hours content from them. Just FYI.

I find the news we get here excellent.

Also good is the channel France something (in English) and sky news I was surprised to find is same topic coverage as BBC but better than them.

Sorry just think arguing about Qatar, Al J etc.

Let's talk about stonewall and I bet it was their idea, wangling a totally friendly interview, on a global popular English language news outlet, which isn't the one we get on freesat or whatever it is.

Pathetic.

SolasAnla · 31/12/2021 22:44

@334bu
From what I understand from some Muslim vloger's that males should also dress modestly. This would include covering the chest shoulders and arms down to the elbow.

@SantaClawsServiette
Sorry☺ that was ment for Vvvvip for some reason my @'s hop randomly.🤷🏼‍♀️

@Vvvvip
What's the expression for showing excessive skin in the Islamic faith?

Would a display of a bare upper chest, bare shoulder and bare arm be acceptable dress code for Qatar's TV reports?
