Chris Ever quote tweets Martina in support of her.

Martina's quoted tweet:

It is not fair for women to race against transgender Lia Thomas: Olympic champ Nancy Hogshead-Makar | Daily Mail Online- a well reasoned and fair take on trans women inclusion in women’s sports, IMO. Well done Nancy! dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10341327/It-not-fair-women-race-against-transgender-Lia-Thomas-Olympic-champ-Nancy-Hogshead-Makar.html

Good!

Good to see.

HPFA · 25/12/2021 20:42

Can't find a single reply to the Tweet that isn't supportive.

aliasundercover · 25/12/2021 21:23

Thank you Chris.

rabbitwoman · 25/12/2021 21:45

Yes, all the replies to Chris are super supportive as well as the other replies to Martina, which is absolutely remarkable!! Maybe TRAs are having Christmas day off....

But what is really interesting is that this appears to be the first time Chris has entered this debate publicly. Are there others in the wings waiting to add their voices? Martina, along with Sharon Davies, have been out on a limb alone on this for too long, they need support from big names.

I wonder who the next one will be?!

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 25/12/2021 22:06

Daley Thompson has re-upped his support again (Twitter on Christmas Eve, iirc).

More & more I am wondering about the ones who don't speak up... cheers Chris 🥃

Sharron & Daley speaking out always make me joyful - childhood heroes who don't disappoint

The ones who don't speak up may be the ones who stand to lose money by speaking up.
Redshoeblueshoe · 25/12/2021 22:34

Thank you Chris

buckeejit · 25/12/2021 22:44

Great stuff & also adding my thanks & admiration for those who continue to speak out 💐

rabbitwoman · 25/12/2021 22:51

Oh wow, looking on Daley Thompson's twitter he is an absolute hero on this!!!

Not a lot of push back either..... No calls for his Jon, no threats...... Hmmmm.....

But we loved Daley Thompson so I am v glad!!

oviraptor21 · 25/12/2021 22:55

Chris and Martina are both very active commentators. The broadcasters could choose not to re-employ them if they become too controversial.

I expect they have mortgages/rent to pay and food to put on the table, and cannot afford to risk being fired / not rehired / ostracised in an industry which works through personal connections. Just as many other men and women in other industries cannot take that personal risk.
2319inprogress · 25/12/2021 23:08

Triphazards I understand that but there are many who are basically too big to cancel (& too rich for it to matter)
And I'm quite sure it has cost Martina et al money too.

2319inprogress · 25/12/2021 23:09

I think my comment is being read as more general than I intended it to be!

rabbitwoman · 25/12/2021 23:20

There are a few sports starts who, if they spoke up, could absolutely change this whole debate.

There are quite a few female athletes, like Serena Williams, who I have already heard speak up about how they would not stand a chance against Andy Murray or any other male tennis star (on a recent interview she said ladies' tennis was a completely different game and she would not want to compete against men because she likes to win. She explicitly said Andy Murray would beat her 6 - 0 6-0 in 15 mins.)

rabbitwoman · 25/12/2021 23:25

This is particularly pertinent to me because I compete - or used to - in kickboxing.

Completely amateur, but as a senior athlete (it's 30+ in kickboxing and I am WELL over that!) I would not stand a hope against a trans woman. In fact, I would probably get seriously hurt.

The unfairness of it is so stark, and yet I am still struck by some of my closest friends who just don't seem to think there is any advantage to being an actual man in a women's competition!!! One of my pals used to be GC but she said she changed her mind when she saw all the abuse Laurel Hubbard got and was actually cheering on for her to win.

wtaf???? What about the other competitors? What about their feelings? Actually, what about MY fair chance? But women always put everyone else first....

buckeejit · 25/12/2021 23:26

@rabbitwoman totally agree that we need more sportspeople to speak out. Also understand the massive risk for them

Goatsaregreat · 26/12/2021 00:11

I'll bet that the sterling work Lia is doing demonstrating the stark differences between men and women in elite swimming will have a major (unintended) impact on the international debate.

ArabellaScott · 26/12/2021 08:26

Yes, Chris!

Cailleach1 · 26/12/2021 10:23

Thank goodness. I'm just wondering where those huge proponents of fairness in sport are on this. Thinking of David Walsh who was so vocal about Lance Armstrong. Even when it wasn't popular. Maybe it is just men's sports that David Walsh thinks the competitors deserve fairness.. So LA, an allegedly doping man (with a man's body like everyone else in the race) is disgraceful. Whereas a man in a race where others are women seems to not be worthy of a murmur. In fact, by not calling it out as she/he did on other things, one could suspect that DW prioritises men's wishes over fairness for women. So much for the paragon of fairness. The desire to call it out may depend on who is cheating and who is being cheated on, I suppose.

At least these people let us know who the hypocritical, misogynistic ars*holes are anyway. Maybe in another time, DW would be of the ilk that thinks women have no souls.

Linguini · 26/12/2021 10:55

I completely disagree with the opening paragraph in this article

Transgender women should be allowed to compete in women's athletics, so long as these individuals can show that they've mitigated the athletic advantages that come with male puberty

The only possible way to mitigate the athletic advantages of male puberty is to start on puberty blockers before it has begun, so in most males that's before 12 years old. I'm completely and utterly against that medical pathway.

Otherwise it's trying to say some hormones/ surgeries in adult males could completely reverse the effects of male puberty, which so far zero evidence shows this. In addition it's trying to say "some transwomen can compete against women but others can't and they'll need to prove xyz first" which is a slippery slope, and who decides what the markers are? I'm sure we've been through all this already with the joke of the IOC guidelines.

Just. No. No transwomen in women's sport. It's so simple. No, thank you!

Triphazards · 26/12/2021 11:19

"I completely disagree with the opening paragraph in this article

'Transgender women should be allowed to compete in women's athletics, so long as these individuals can show that they've mitigated the athletic advantages that come with male puberty.'"

Me too. Let's keep things simple and do not let men into women's sport!

Truthlikeness · 26/12/2021 11:46

Males pre-puberty have a measurable advantage over females. There is no way for them to fairly compete against each other.
