Another one for the thank you card list ☺️

oldwomanwhoruns · 11/12/2021 07:56

Thanks to her for standing up but -

I'm disappointed that she has felt it necessary to concede any ground. We have to hold to the clear biological distinction between men and women. Biological reality. But she is muddying the water, in order to be kind. We women need to stop doing this.

Grumpyosaurus · 11/12/2021 08:22

Well done that woman. Helpfully, her husband is an MP.

Whenever anyone starts campaigning to do away with the HoL, I remember stuff like this. Peers are not beholden to their party in the way MPs are, and are also not bothered about re-election. They can say what they think and some of them (not all, sadly) are intelligent, thoughtful, principled people.

Interrobanger · 11/12/2021 08:38

Oh my goodness that speech was amazing.

highame · 11/12/2021 09:13

This whole debate in the HoL is worth seeing. I happened on it yesterday evening and stayed, glad I did. The absolute majority spoke in favour of protection of GC views but Lord Cashman turned everything on its head, and put our views and how this affects us as being the trans issues. It's worth listening to him as a opposing thought. 1:57 in

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0012gdd from about 1:34: gets you to Baroness Jenkin but both before and afterwards there are some really good speeches. However, it is a long watch, over 4 hours in total.

DoubleTweenQueen · 11/12/2021 09:21

Apologies, when was this? Did I hear a few gasps on the chamber in some places?

Just fabulous.

Has anyone told her this 'quasi religious cult' is in schools now and we need a very strong message from the Dept for Ed to push back? And that safeguarding our children is needed now?

Yes yes yes to 'biological realist' Am never going to use the terminology attempted to be imposed on me

endofthelinefinally · 11/12/2021 13:50
@LonginesPrime very much agree.

In theory I favour democracy. Then I compare the caliber of people in the House of Lords, and Bojo and his mob, and I wonder...
Yes indeed, but the older ones are dying off and the cronies are getting in...

JellySlice · 11/12/2021 19:07

Cashman's speech is utter DARVO.

I have noticed that the attacks on those of us who support trans equality have been particularly nasty. Organisations and institutions that defend trans equality have equally been targeted and attacked.^
^
Individuals who voice pro-trans views in the public sphere are frequently attacked by those who wish to silence them. On social media every day, people who advance reasonable views in support of trans people are often harassed in the most vicious ways. Organisations that support trans people and their families and others that support wider equality, including trans inclusion—organisations such as the Girl Guides; Mind, the mental health charity; and the National Trust—are all attacked and piled on to because they support LGBT+ equality.

Examples? Not one. Are there any?

Thank you, Baroness Jenkin

YourVagesty · 11/12/2021 20:08

👌👌👌

Needmoresleep · 11/12/2021 22:04

Did Ruth Hunt play any part.

She has been curiously silent since leaving Stonewall and taking a seat in the House of Lords.

viques · 11/12/2021 22:06

Another biological realist checking in here. Great speech, fact not fancy.

FireFlyBoogaloo · 12/12/2021 17:21

Why does it feel like the tories would be a great party if they just got rid of all the useless bloody men 😂

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/12/2021 17:26

@LonginesPrime

I really like the term "biological realist" as an alternative to "gender critical" - it shifts the focus to exactly where it should be and makes a much stronger statement.
I do too. Its straight to the point.
ArabellaScott · 12/12/2021 18:54

I'm in favour of 'biological realist', too. I don't really care what daft inferences people try to draw - those arguing in bad faith will come up with the most ludicrous false equivalences. No point worrying about them. Like basing your name choice for your children on what bullies might say.

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria

There is a core of Tory women who are willing to speak up about the loss of women's rights.

I'm prepared to vote Tory. Which is a surprise to me.

Yup, this is the hill my Labour vote is willing to die on.
ImmutableSexQueen · 12/12/2021 21:15

Yes! Well said that Baroness.

Grumpyosaurus · 12/12/2021 21:34

I'm prepared to vote Tory. Which is a surprise to me.
I'm considering it, which astounds me. But it doesn't get more basic than being able to accept biological reality.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 13/12/2021 08:37

Yup, this is the hill my Labour vote is willing to die on.

Ditto - it pains me to even consider it, but as you said - this is a hill worth dying on.

oldwomanwhoruns · 13/12/2021 09:34

Yes to biological reality.
But-

I know that the baroness' heart is in the right place, but that doesn't make me like what she had to say.

We should not be exposing our children to a paraphilia.
