Would JKR look good in ermine (bet she'd choose fake ermine)

Further to the thread posted below - and with thanks to Mollyollydolly who's idea it is, if you would like to see JKR invited to be a Peer of the Realm then please add your reasoning to this thread.

It is a source of personal pain to me that I do not know this woman because I'd dearly like buy her a drink.

I have no idea, therefore whether she would welcome a nomination to be a member of the House of Lords, but I am fairly confident that anyone who has been attacked for the length of time that she has might, at the very least, see such a thread as cheering.

Perhaps even almost as cheering as me saying "no way, put your money away, doll face, I'll get your round in. The very least I can do is buy you a pint because I owe you. My goodness, how I owe you".

Criteria is here: lordsappointments.independent.gov.uk/how-to-apply-2

and states:

The House of Lords Appointments Commission will make its recommendations on the basis of merit.

Please summarise how you would make an effective contribution to the work of the House of Lords and why you consider that you are suitable for recommendation as a non-party-political peer.

The Commission requires evidence of all of the following, and you should ensure that you have covered each of these in your application:
Ability to make an effective and significant contribution to the work of the House of Lords in your area of expertise and the wide range of other issues that come before the House

A proven record of significant achievement in your chosen field
Willing and able to commit the time necessary to make an effective contribution in the House

An understanding of the constitutional framework
That you are independent of any political party and intend to remain independent

Oooh she's a shoe in. She'd be amazing.

TeenMinusTests · 22/11/2021 18:40

I think she'd be an asset o the HoL, what with her charity work and standing up for women's rights.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/11/2021 18:44

She would! Imagine the endless tantrums though, it would be worse than when Kathleen Stock was awarded an OBE.

nocoolnamesleft · 22/11/2021 18:44

Services to literacy in children.
Services to charity.
Services to women's rights.

refusetobeasheep · 22/11/2021 18:45

Clearly she is in the stratosphere above making a meaningful contribution to the literary world. Generations have literally grown up luxuriating in her writing.
Then there is her impressive charity work and peerless sticking up for women's rights.
Get her some ermine!!

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 22/11/2021 18:47

Services to:

literacy;
women;
philanthropy;
freedom of speech and thought and the avoidance of thought totalism and authoritarianism (oddly enough, themes of her books).

There are so many dimensions in which JKR has made an admirable contribution.

I've no idea if she'd wish to be a Baroness or beyond but she should certainly be offered the honour.

RedDogsBeg · 22/11/2021 18:49

I can't think of anyone more worthy of a place in the HoL than JKR.

Mollyollydolly · 22/11/2021 18:53

I'm going to do it. I cant think of anyone more worthy.

RoseByAnyOtherName · 22/11/2021 18:56

"JK Rowling transformed the British film industry when she insisted the Harry Potter films were made in the UK, creating thousands of jobs, leading the government to offer filmmakers tax breaks , leading Warner Brothers to invest in the UK, too."

Her contribution to the economy:

SpindlesWhorl · 22/11/2021 19:00

She is a very significant contributor to the economy, charity, children's literature, fiction, and women's rights. Generous and gracious.

Amazing.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 22/11/2021 19:01

The Baroness would be useful on this I imagine. If anyone is in her inner circle, it might be worth inquiring.

macj1 · 22/11/2021 19:02

When all this is done, they'll be able to redress the lack of statues of women in parliament sq: JK, Maya, Julie Bindel, Helen Stanisland, Professor Stock, Posey.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 22/11/2021 19:06

@macj1

When all this is done, they'll be able to redress the lack of statues of women in parliament sq: JK, Maya, Julie Bindel, Helen Stanisland, Professor Stock, Posey.
Allison Bailey. Raquel Rosario Sanchez. Pragna Patel. Helen Steel. Helen Joyce for the landmark of the book.

Sonia Sodha is coming up on the rails. Margaret McCartney. Susan Bewley.

So many splendid women who need to be recognised.

Beckert · 22/11/2021 19:08

I couldn't think of anyone better. She's fair, kind and reasonable despite all at is thrown at her.

Her contribution to literature.
The fact that she does the right thing and actually pays a fair tax.
Her contribution to charity.
Her generosity and kindness that even extends to those who have previously been deeply unpleasant about her.
Her commitment to fairness and truth.

What's not to love.

DaftVader42 · 22/11/2021 19:09

I’d love to buy her a coffee, and sit and chat. I love that despite provocation, she remains calm and clear. This is not about transphobia, but supporting women.

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/11/2021 19:12

I agree that Sonia Sodha is really getting confident now, her articles are brilliant. I'm sure she got a lot of abuse on Twitter, but it's not stopping her.
JK Rowling is such a fabulous role model.

weegiemum · 22/11/2021 19:17

I'll nominate her.

If only to really piss off my kids (mine are 21,19, 17). They're all totally against her "transphobia". Bollocks to them.

whichiswitch · 22/11/2021 19:27

JK Rowling was the first female novelist to become a billionaire. She lost her billionaire status due massive charity donations and paying taxes.

Gumbomambo · 22/11/2021 19:27

She would make a wonderful baroness. Her contributions to literacy, charity, economy, Edinburgh’s heritage, women’s rights, children’s safeguarding and much much more. She’s a brave strong female role model.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 22/11/2021 19:29

What gum just said

I’d deffo be up for nominating her!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 22/11/2021 19:29

Oh, and MS.

She's done a heap for that specifically.

OP posts:
Juggins2 · 22/11/2021 19:29

I'd love JKR to be elected to the house of Lords.

BUT I don't think she is eligible as she's a donor to the Labour Party so couldn't sit as an independent Peer..

Could the Labour Party nominate her??

(or would they be too frit....let me guess)

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/11/2021 19:35

Can't think of anyone more worthy.
Are we all supposed to nominate her individually, or can we do a mass one?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 22/11/2021 19:36

I wonder when her last donation to the Labour Party was made.

And whether a person might be able to start afresh as an independent if they were ideologically opposed to the bat shittery of a party which many of us though of as our Obe Wan Kenobe "only hope"?

OP posts:
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 22/11/2021 19:38

I reckon we do it en masse on here. It looks like we/me needs to send the form to her office to ask her to fill it out and submit it.

At the very least, I assume that getting an email with a long list of people saying "we'd like that a great deal" would be a salve against the nonsense* she is subjected to online.

*this word does not accurately reflect the depth of the abuse she has been subjected to.
