Schools in Scotland - gender ID

This is currently on display in our local secondary school (in Scotland).

Why are educationalists not questioning this misinformation?

"Sex can be a combination of chromosomes in 5 different ways".

It is astonishing to me that this is being taught in school.

The Head of Education has been made aware of it.

I wonder what the Head of Science at that school thinks.

Thingybob · 13/11/2021 13:17

I think the school should concentrate on maths as one pupil states that chromosomes can be combined in 5 different ways but goes on to list 6 combinations.

HipTightOnions · 13/11/2021 13:31

Why are educationalists not questioning this misinformation?

I agree, and this kind of think makes me despair of my ‘profession’.

The kindest thing I can think of is that they are too scared to speak up.

That’s not ok either though.

HipTightOnions · 13/11/2021 13:31

Thing not think.

Thingybob · 13/11/2021 13:53

Anyone teaching that rubbish should be made aware of some of the physical and learning disabilities that differing 'combinations' of sex chromosomes often cause.

Try sending them this that has an embedded video

How can anyone use kids like Rapha to promote their ideology?

Haggisfish3 · 13/11/2021 13:56

But it’s not wrong? I am very gc but what they have stated is correct in terms of intersex. They haven’t said that intersex people are transgender. Which is a good thing.

Haggisfish3 · 13/11/2021 13:57

I actually think it’s a pretty good board. And I am very gc.

Haggisfish3 · 13/11/2021 13:58

And nowhere have they said one can change sex.

malloo · 13/11/2021 14:00

They are giving the impression there are five different sexes, of course its wrong. Or at best misleading.

malloo · 13/11/2021 14:01

And no one is 'assigned' a sex at birth

Haggisfish3 · 13/11/2021 14:05

I don’t think they are suggesting there are five sexes. And intersex people certainly did used to be assigned a sex at birth.

People who have those chromosomal combinations are all either male or female dependent on whether they have a y chromosome or not.

The board is suggesting that they are something different.

Haggisfish3 · 13/11/2021 14:17

No they aren’t. Intersex are intersex.

malloo · 13/11/2021 14:23

For 99.98% of the population sex is simply observed at birth, not assigned. For a tiny tiny minority of people with DSDs this process might be a bit more complicated. So the question is, why on a board in a secondary school under the heading 'gender identity' is there a great long piece about people with DSDs which has absolutely nothing to do with gender identity?

Thingybob · 13/11/2021 14:24

@Haggisfish3

No they aren’t. Intersex are intersex.
No, from birth all those combination will have the normal physiological identifiers of sex, i.e. the ones with a y chromosome will have a penis and those without will have female genitally and this sex will be recorded on their birth certificate.

The chromosomal abnormality may be picked up soon after birth or much later depending on when any physical or learning disabilities become apparent.

Justme56 · 13/11/2021 14:24

The variation in anatomy and physiology (body parts, hormones, genetics etc) represent sex related traits, not sex.

Sex is the type of gamete's ones reproductive anatomy is organised to support.

Triphazards · 13/11/2021 14:42

@Haggisfish3

No they aren’t. Intersex are intersex.
"Intersex" is an obsolete term in science/medicine, because these conditions are not somewhere between male and female.

They are all either male or female.

And of course disorders of sexual development have nothing to do with "transgender" nonsense.

Lolapusht · 13/11/2021 15:04

I know I’m looking at that poster out of context ie can’t see what else is on the wall or how this is used within lessons etc, but if something’s on a wall like that in a school, as a child I’d be taking that as “correct”. I’d also then be wondering what gender I was or if I had a gender. I don’t identify as a gender, I am female. I don’t know anyone who would say they “identify” as a something when it comes to gender. The information on that poster, to me, suggests that this would be the norm ie everyone identifies as something so not doing so means you’re doing it wrong. Have they put gender into context within a larger discussion eg “Some people are gay, some people are trans, some people are asexual, but it tends to be that the majority of people are heterosexual so it may be that you never have to identify with a particular category of gender” (and why on Earth does it need to have a label?!). It’s not a case of not talking about something and keeping it hidden, it’s more that the vast majority of people are attracted to people of the opposite sex so the majority of children don’t need to be worrying about if they’re enby, demiboy, mascfemme, trans or whatever of the 100 options.

Dougalskeeper · 14/11/2021 08:54

It's just disgusting propaganda, aimed aimed at brainwashing children " give me a child ..." The SNP are totally corrupted, Alba is the way forward.

FindTheTruth · 14/11/2021 10:30

OP can you share the 'intersex' poster with the DSD Families?

Schools guide - Differences of Sex Development: A guide to DSD/intersex inclusion for schools

  • Schools have a statutory responsibility to properly support children with medical conditions under Section 100 of the Children and Families Act 2014.
  • Every year in the UK, approximately 150 children are diagnosed with differences of sex development (DSD) – and that means there are approximately 2,300 children living with DSD conditions in the UK.
  • Schools should avoid imposing terms like “intersex”, which may alienate or further stigmatise pupils.
  • Avoid resources and external agencies that use “intersex” in a tokenistic or inaccurate way – if you’re not sure, it would be best to leave intersex/DSD out of lesson plans. This is especially important if schools are planning on covering LGBT+ issues.
  • Avoid resources that refer to “intersex” as a third sex category. This is inaccurate and stigmatising and could be very distressing for children with DSD. It is also not inline with schools’ responsibility to teach UK equality law accurately to pupils
  • Avoid conflating DSD with LGBT and identity issues. most intersex and DSD orgs and consensus statements agree that it is unhelpful and does little to highlight and address actual issues faced by people with
DSD (see also the Resources and External Agencies section of this booklet)
  • Do not pressure children and young people into talking about their DSD

Thanks for that info. I think it would be useful to send to the school in question .

Tobogganist · 14/11/2021 11:13

Thank you for sharing the information about children with DSD and their families. It seems that there is a serious lack of consideration and respect for those children.

I still think the teacher in the op had good intentions at heart and it was one of the better displays about this that I have seen.

MassiveHoard · 14/11/2021 11:30

It really worries me that we'll have generation of kids who haven't been taught fundamental biology. How on earth they think this is helpful to anyone I'll never understand. I get that we need to include everyone but giving children inaccurate information about something so fundamental is not kind to anyone. Have some fucking backbone ffs.
