I've been noticing all the Movember stuff about this month - totally centres men (as it should), apparently no tiptoeing around language is required, their stuff is so clear and no nonsense. It's about men's health, women are supporters, end of. Why can't women's health prioritise women?!

'a major political party removing, or fearful of using, the word woman - that is a major talking point'

FindTheTruth · 09/11/2021 11:18

Emma SDLP and another caller who want 'woman' removed from the bill, continuously USE THE WORD WOMAN!

as another caller pointed out.

like Maya says we need words to describe ourselves as EMMA herself has done this morning

SolasAnla · 09/11/2021 11:20

@FindTheTruth

SDLP spokeswoman saying men need to access free period products in public body buildings for their girlfriends so it's inclusive....tying herself up in her word salad knots.
Total ideology salad:

Buuuuut not in the MEN's toilets.
Her quickly running away from THAT issue and forgetting the needs of people who bleed and who ID as men.

As for the use of period products for medical conditions.
PSA
If you are bleeding from your male "sex organs" seek medical advice ASAP.
If you are bleeding from your female "sex organs" and don't believe it's due to the normal shedding of the lining of your uterus wall seek medical advice ASAP.
To both females and males the legislation only provides free product to assist with the disposal of the lining of your uterus wall.

Condom are (usually equally) available in male and female toilets because females use condoms to ensure they still need period products.🤷🏼‍♀️

Her argument is a mess because she uses women rather than people. We are aware, from a basic level of communication, to make any sort of viable point she has to use women.
Listen to her points and replace woman with people.

Whatwouldscullydo · 09/11/2021 11:20

The only reason any of these idiots are even able to stand up ajd say " people is inclusive. People have periods" etc are only able to do so.because someone else has done the " dirty work " of explaining to women amd girls that they are women and girls ajd female "

Childrenofthestones · 09/11/2021 11:24

@NoThankYouSaurus

Rebecca the GP is an idiot. Can she not understand that nobody is objecting to the substance of the bill, nobody is opposing improving period health. But the bloody terminology dilutes the purposes of the bill that she is so passionate about. Why can't she - sorry people - understand that?
They can understand it but they are part of a cult and terrified to step outside the perceived dogma. I have had friends tell me that they agree with my GC points but daren't say so publicly.
Whatwouldscullydo · 09/11/2021 11:27

Unable to answer the questions. What a surprise

SolasAnla · 09/11/2021 11:31

@FindTheTruth

Nolan: 'Are you saying Emma that you believe men use period products?' SDLP spokeswoman: 'No I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying they need to access them and they need to be aware of women and periods and period poverty'
I spotted that "okey-dokey transpobic wokie" faux pas.Confused I hope she is not on Twitter or she may be "educated" about inclusiveness of the male vulva and female penis.
FindTheTruth · 09/11/2021 11:31

Nolan to the caller talking about sexism who supports removing the word 'woman'

Nolan 'how can you talk about sexism if you can't talk about women? would you legislate for it using the word persons?'

Caller 'I don't care what it discusses because the period poverty bill is more important' (as it can be done now and sexism can't)

Nolan 'did you know the BBC has redefined sexuality?'

Caller 'What I'm more worried about is things that affect me and that affect MY PATIENTS*

Nolan 'Do you consider yourself as a woman or a person?'

Caller 'I'm both. I'm a person and a woman'

Nolan why hasn't the SDLP used both? I think that's a fair question.

So this caller is a Doctor / therapist? who believes sex isn't important?

Whatwouldscullydo · 09/11/2021 11:32

Actually I think the penny dropped when he discussed sexusk with her. She was just too far gone to go back at that point.

Whatwouldscullydo · 09/11/2021 11:33

Sexism

Sorry for typo

SteppedOnBloodyLego · 09/11/2021 11:37

Oooh , here you go ….

Nolan:'Are you saying Emma that you believe men use period products?'
SDLP spokeswoman:'No I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying PEOPLE need to access them and PEOPLE need to be aware of PEOPLE and periods and period poverty'

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 09/11/2021 11:39

Urgh. Who is left to vote for in NI? I’m really struggling. Alliance had a bit of dodgy rhetoric a while back too.

As an aside I was only able to listen to a few minutes of that piece as Nolan is such a terrible interviewer. He’s the only one tackling the issue here though.

IvyTwines2 · 09/11/2021 11:43

I haven't listened back to it yet, but someone who heard it has just told me the BBC Radio 5 presenter on the midnight to 1am medical slot last night was prompted by an emailer to apologetically change the wording 'women's periods' to just 'periods'.

Datun · 09/11/2021 11:50

@Whatwouldscullydo

The only reason any of these idiots are even able to stand up ajd say " people is inclusive. People have periods" etc are only able to do so.because someone else has done the " dirty work " of explaining to women amd girls that they are women and girls ajd female "
This.

The question should be if you're talking about persons needing access to menstruation products, how do those persons know it applies to them?

In fact how does anyone know to whom it applies?

This is what really gets me, every time, that these people communicate purely on the basis that we all know what a woman is, whilst at the same time telling us we're not allowed to say so. And yet they have to assume our knowledge otherwise they couldn't communicate.

And you know, you absolutely know this is true, when they're all dumbfounded if you ask how does a person know if they've got a cervix? They're all spluttering incredulity at such a daft question.

Because of course you know - on the basis that you're female. A fact which they are simultaneously telling you you must not use.

I liked the way Nolan was pushing his podcast, too. He wants people to see the bigger picture. He realises that there will be outrage in eliminating words like mother, but he wants people to see how deliberate it is.

I wish he would join the extra dots. About it being inclusive. People will argue that it's only going to be inclusive to a tiny minority and therefore it shouldn't be happening.

But it's more than that. It's not about being inclusive to transmen, as we all know. It's about decoupling the word woman from her biology so that the word woman can be claimed by men.

Everything gone from start to finish, about this movement is benefiting men.

I can't be the only one who gets frustrated at the number of well-meaning men, who simply don't have the right spectacles, the feminist lens, to peer through to watch it all slot instantly into place in the way that feminists do.

Datun · 09/11/2021 11:52

random ' gone' there!

Whatwouldscullydo · 09/11/2021 12:00

That last caller made a fair point. The definition of the phobia. Disagreement /different opinion is not a phobia.

I know people who don't agree with it. But thats as far as it goes. They don't hurt, abuse, make life difficult for, discriminate against people who are. That's allowed isn't it?

There's no fear or hatred or wish for harm.

We realky need to he careful of laying claim.to someone's.private thoughts.

Tidyspy · 09/11/2021 12:21

Has the episode disappeared from BBC sounds? I was halfway through listening, paused it to do something and when I came back it had gone!

It looks like it's there, but Listen Now goes to a blank page.

Novina · 09/11/2021 12:40

Just had exactly the same experience Tidyspy ... vanished mid-playback. Hopefully it'll be available again later.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/11/2021 13:32

It's there if you click on the programme itself in the iplayer, rather than the link.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/11/2021 13:33

Try this

Tidyspy · 09/11/2021 14:08

Ah yes it's back - thanks @BoreOfWhabylon

Tidyspy · 09/11/2021 14:11

"How can you talk about sexism if you can't talk about women?" just brilliant. I wish he'd let the silence go on for longer while Rebecca's head exploded.

bellinisurge · 09/11/2021 15:42

Listening to it now.
I'm absolutely fucking heartbroken that the SDLP have adopted this shit. I'm desperate for SDLP to be the strongest voice of nationalism in NI. And they had my support. The voices of SDLP supporting callers saying they can't support them anymore because of this.
Actually feeling a bit tearful. The madness of this shit in Ireland is going to take a while to unravel. Although TENI (Irish Stonewall) are on the cusp of financial scandal.
