Terry Gilliam show cancelled

Has had his show cancelled at the old vic due to problematic views.

I'm a fan of Gilliam and Into the Woods so might have booked tickets anyway, but will definitely do so now when they find a new theatre.

Sorry for TG, but every white man cancelled helps get the sunlight out there...

ArtemesiaK · 01/11/2021 18:00

Sorry,Terry, but I can't help thinking this might be good news... Hope you sue them....

EsmaCannonball · 01/11/2021 18:01

So The Old Vic enabled Kevin Spacey's abusive behaviour to thrive for years, but now opinions and jokes get you cancelled?

Aside from that, I'm constantly amazed at how much money creative organisations are prepared to throw away in order to satisfy the cancellation demands of their more Stasi-like employees. I could understand if Gilliam had actually done something terrible, but cancelling a big name production with a big name director in this climate seems like self-inflicted damage. Who wants to watch earnest, ideologically-approved plays, directed by plodding, ideologically-approved directors?

Unsureschool · 01/11/2021 18:03

The whole message of the show is " nice is different than good".

How apt!

I'd like to know what clause in his contract enabled it to be cancelled on the grounds of causing offence.

TedImgoingmad · 01/11/2021 18:10

The king of dystopian future movies gets cancelled in the dystopian present. I hope he shouts about this very loudly.

Epli · 01/11/2021 18:23

You know what's really irritating - you could have misogynist views on women and scream them out loud for centuries, you could write books on the subject and be given Noble prize. But don't you dare say something like TWANW. Dave Chapelle was 100% right, that's why they hated it so much.

My first thought too.

Yes, it's sledgehammers and nuts, isn't it?
I don't especially like his views on #metoo, but I'm not sure what they have to do with his ability to stage a good Sondheim show.

YES.

It's pathetic that a theatre thinks the role of artists is to toe the line and avoid controversy.

BlueberryCheezecake · 01/11/2021 19:29

The Times is spinning the trans angle in the headline, but the text of the article suggests the main concern is his defence of the rapist Harvey Weinstein and his description of the #MeToo movement as a "witch hunt".

Beamur · 01/11/2021 19:42

What has he actually said?

AssassinatedBeauty · 01/11/2021 19:46

So it's nothing to do with the production itself and purely down to some employees of the theatre disapproving of some of the things he's said recently. The culmination apparently being that he expressed support for Chappelle's Netflix show.

OperationDessertStorm · 01/11/2021 19:50

The old vic are a charity but did receive a grant from the arts council in the 2020 covid crisis. I think this is another scandal on use of public money. These companies have been bailed out with money for over a year but have just thrown out a show (that they have already started work on and sold thousands of tickets) for a very vague crime. Are they swimming in cash?

He certainly wasn't defending Weinstein. He did agree with the journalist calling me too a witch hunt but his comments were far from simplistic misogyny.

Not saying I agree with him but Gilliam doesn't do black and white and, as someone who witnessed the abuse in the industry, he's entitled to make nuanced points about why it happened.

If that was the case though, they'd have cancelled it months ago. They don't care about women's safety, privacy and dignity, because if they did they wouldn't have brought in the mixed sex toilets after fundraising for more women's, and would have listened to women's concerns and reversed the decision when they did. The timing of this feels more like a proxy war over Dave Chappelle, and Gilliam's support for him, a sort of mini copycat Netflix protest.
Franca123 · 01/11/2021 20:30

Cancelling a man is surely one step too far?

EsmaCannonball · 01/11/2021 20:33

For me this isn't about liking Terry Gilliam or defending his opinions but about the totalitarian nature of cancel culture. As Novara Media briefly found out last week, anyone can fall foul of the tyranny at any time. I reckon the proponents of cancel culture think that the rest of us are so coarse and ignorant that we go through life blithely unaffected and unoffended by anything, whereas we've learned that enforcing ideological purity is more damaging than putting up with some views we don't like. If Gilliam were employed running women's services then his views on #MeToo might be relevant but, although they are unpleasant, they shouldn't exile him from directing plays.

Mmmm because being an apologist for rapists always tends to get men cancelled. I can disagree with him on this issue while thinking his show should not be cancelled due to out of control purity spirals.

This.

Datun · 01/11/2021 20:42

I wonder how that's going to go down with John Cleese, who is currently researching the entire issue.

Very well put. Exactly this.

That's a good point.
EsmaCannonball · 01/11/2021 21:21

It would be interesting to know what the Old Vic staff would have done had Terry Gilliam actually identified as a black lesbian, instead of joking about identifying as one. Who are they to say he isn't? His mistake was to claim transracialism. The joke has made him an outcast, but if he'd seriously announced his lesbianism he would instantly be proclaimed brave and marginalised, and one of the world's most successful lesbian directors. I can't believe how insane that is. The only thing that delegitimises his claim to lesbianism is his tone.
