I think I've put too much in the title!

Sarah Phillimore has done some great work here looking properly at the signatures to the Open Letter to the BBC.

19,000 signatures? More like 9,701? Really interesting.

I love a bit of accuracy.

prudencepuffin · 01/11/2021 08:43

Excellent bit of sleuthing. Some of those names are really chilling with their links to Nazi propaganda and violence towards women. The revised numbers are important.

we would add - if you are going to make a world wide appeal for support for your religious dogma, then 9,701 verified signatures is a pretty poor response.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/11/2021 08:44

Some of those fake signatures which are 'verified' express extremely disturbing sentiments. Good work from Sarah and colleagues there, many thanks!

eurochick · 01/11/2021 08:52

Nice work as usual by Sarah.

OhHolyJesus · 01/11/2021 08:56

Brilliantly scathing, that's the sort of thing I like to read with my morning coffee.

Can't wait to see what the police do with the report of a hate crime against the BBC.

ScreamingMeMeSawUs · 01/11/2021 08:57

Great work from Sarah there. I hope she sends it to the BBC and other news outlets.

That tweet about "anti colonialists" in the US and Canada trying to influence policy in the UK makes a good point.

Rightsraptor · 01/11/2021 09:00

It says the Crown Prosecution Service signed that letter. This may, of course, be wrong but WTF if they actually did? Struggling to get my head around that idea.

Clymene · 01/11/2021 09:12

Great work Sarah. Goes along with the tweet which asked if they needed to read the article before signing the letter.

I hope Christine Burns MBE is feeling ashamed

highame · 01/11/2021 09:13

Me too Rightsraptor scary or what?

Wonderful stuff, aren't you glad we're on the wrong side of History with women like Sarah having our backs

OhPea · 01/11/2021 09:21

I am British but live overseas, so I do often sign letters in my capacity as a British citizen rather than where I live - though obviously this analysis shows it’s a rather more of a percentage than is likely to be made up of people like me.

I didn’t realise that they include unverified signatures! Bit disingenuous to say the least.

FemaleAndLearning · 01/11/2021 09:23

Wow, surely the organisers have done the same analysis? Oh wait a minute a woman has done it for them.

I really can't get my head around people dismissing abuse.

PronounssheRa · 01/11/2021 09:28

Some of the fake names 3983: Suck my girl cock or you're a transphobe; 3915: Gas the kikes, Race war now, 1488, Auschwitz. 11430: Silence the Women so we can rape them!

I hope Christine Burns MBE is feeling ashamed

This Christine Burns?. In a bizarre way rapists have a better line in manners [than Feminist Leaders]. At least they treat their victims, without prejudice, as women.”

That quote from CB is repulsive, but not surprising.

Yes Female, this is something that concerns me more and more. I feel I'm close to losing the friends I always worried I would, should this subject ever come up.

Eg one was cheering on the news story about Bimini Bon Boulash signing the open letter and complaining about the "anti trans" BBC.

It's not about that. It's about women who have been abused and raped. It so obviously is. Why is this being ignored and these women disbelieved? Yet I worried if I even do as much as point that out, I would most likely lose someone I otherwise like very much, who from then on would judge me as some kind of awful person. But maybe that time has come. This bullshit can't be condoned.

Thanks to JCJ and Sarah Phillimore for their excellent work showing this callous nonsense for what it is.

Cailleach1 · 01/11/2021 09:52

From that Christine Burns extract: At least they (rapists) treat their victims without prejudice, as a woman.

So, CB appears to equat being a woman with being raped - and appears to give kudos to the rapist for that.

That is a particularly vile and contemptible comment from CB.
BraveBananaBadge · 01/11/2021 10:01

Christine Burns has only recently come to my attention, somehow. That quote has my jaw on the floor. What an absolutely horrific world view.

AnyFucker · 01/11/2021 10:01

Christine Burns Shock Good God. Every day I see examples in plain sight about how some people really hate women.

JustFrustrated · 01/11/2021 10:08

What outstanding work. Hopefully the BBC will post some kind of addendum to the original article.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 01/11/2021 10:10

The Crown Prosecution Service signed that letter? While I'm not surprised given their vile anti girl "trans" guidelines for schools that they were forced to withdraw rather than defend them in court, how on earth was that signed off?

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 01/11/2021 10:21

Fantastic work by Sarah - some of those signature names really encapsulate the whole tone of the TRA side of the “debate”, really.

Absurd, violent, misogynistic and ultimately laughable. It’s gobsmacking to think how seriously this movement has been taken throughout the western world, how much power has been given to it.

I’d seen this quote before but for some reason thought it was from an American TRA (although it’s quite possible that one of them said something very similar) - but no, this from our very own homegrown Burns.

I’m wondering if there could even be a deeper expression of misogyny. Hard to think of one.

Oh my god. I hadn't seen that before. And Burns is held up as good trans
FindTheTruth · 02/11/2021 05:39

Factual analysis by Sarah Phillimore. Is it surprising that India McTaggart telegraph journalist didn't notice it before publishing this headline and subtitle several hours later?

Telegraph: BBC accused of being ‘transphobic’ as 20,000 speak out against article
Corporation defends piece which campaigners said was ‘poorly evidenced’

I read that article, FindTheTruth (ironic username, by the way) - so depressing that the “20,000 speaking out” is the bit that will become lore, thanks to stupid headlines like that. The article itself is nowhere near as bad as the headline. Although it fails to dig into the letter or the alleged 20,000, it does rather leave you with the impression that there isn’t anything for the 20,000 to complain about.

So annoying that the Telegraph don’t allow comments on things like this.
