Where can a GC feminist spend their cash this Christmas?

68 replies

CruellaDeVilla · 25/10/2021 15:11

So AIBU for not spending any money with John Lewis (who usually get around £2k in spending from me at Christmas)?

M&S are the same. So where’s a GC feminist supposed to shop this year?

Please vote but also, where can I shop for Christmas? I’d really like to support a company which protects or stands up for Women’s rights.

YANBU = why would you spend money with a company like this
YABU = get over it

Some examples below, there are more but these companies have drunk the kool aid.

@KimMumsnet

Hi, OP. We're moving your thread over to the Sex & Gender board now.
Why? It was on AIBU, it had a poll, why on earth move it.

Rhetorical question, in case anyone wonders. I know why. The monitors 🙄

@UndertonesOfCake

Mr Justice Julian Knowles, High Court Judge:

Do better

Great quote. I was wondering how Harry the Owl was earlier

If that was the case, I might be wrong

There ain't much E coming from "TERFS"

Most feminists dont want to exclude anyone. They/we just want to be recognised for what we are.

Female humans. Women.

Woman, Stanley, women.

YANBU

I am spending as much as possible with the tiniest independent businesses I can find on Etsy, or on my High Street. this way, even if I don't agree with their politics, they are so small that they use the profits from the sales to live on and don't make political statements - sneering at JKR like the Body Shop for example - no point in Millie's soaps doing that, they don't have a big enough platform.

You could of course give loads of copies of Simon Edge's very funny book the End of the World is Flat

and this is no use for Christmas (unless you buy very odd presents) but I have just switched to &Sisters sanitary products as they use the word women on the packet and give 10% of their profits to 'educate and support women around the globe'.

YouSetTheTone · 26/10/2021 19:12

I agree op - stopped spending money with JL and Waitrose earlier this year when they announced they were making their changing rooms mixed sex without taking into consideration the wishes/ needs of women and girls who require a single sex changing room.

Will follow this for suggestions. It’s not totally what you asked but if you’re buying any presents for children this list from ‘Let Toys Be Toys’ provides info and websites for businesses that don’t promote stereotypes for girls and boys with the toys. My boys love the ‘Dough by Clo’!

How about a "Wrong Side of History My Arse" Tea Towel? Digital print of the Leeds Spinners banner & all proceeds to FiLiA charity.

Not exactly about being GC, but definitely a feminist sort of gift.

I'd recommend Tarasartoria.com
You can get some of their stuff on Amazon.

I've just got one of their items & it's really nicely made from decent quality silk.

It's a micro financed womens company who create silk items made from handloomed small batches of silk & you'll know who made the item you buy because they sign one of the tags with their name.

"Our social mission is to economically empower women in rural areas through giving training & work at fair compensation."

@CruellaDeVilla would you mind if I copied over any people / businesses mentioned here onto my Twitter thread, just to maximise the people who can see it? I can also link to this thread if that is ok.

Leafstamp · 31/10/2021 11:43

This thread from last year, is also being added to

@Leafstamp thanks I will take a look!

@CruellaDeVilla thanks. Really looking to spend my money more strategically this year and I'm not supporting businesses that would put the feelings of a few men ahead of the safety of women.

If you buy from Amazon you can set your Amazon smile charity to LGB Alliance Smile
