Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My takehome from FiLiA - do one thing each day

I’m in recovery from FiLiA now - what a weekend. Amazing experience.

The biggest thing that has stuck with me, amongst all the heartbreaking stories I heard, all the inspiring and enlightening discussions, all the maddening ignorance and narcissism displayed by the “protestors” outside, all the solidarity and joy and love shared with women across generational and political divides…… was something that Vaishnavi Sundar said, the filmmaker who produced “Dysphoric” which looks at the impact of gender ideology on women and girls in developing countries youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRU9NIX0AA143z2QKukQcOqS96qriKGyw
twitter.com/vaishax/status/1355134390049751042?s=21

She said - do one thing, every day. And that’s what I want to do. Do one thing, take one action each day, that works towards women’s liberation and against male violence against women and girls.

I wanted to share that on here as I found what she had to say so inspirational but am shit at writing things properly. But she spoke along the lines of, sometimes it all seems overwhelming and hopeless, and you feel like giving up, and you get depressed. But she realised that if she wasn’t doing anything about it, if she wasn’t taking action, then she’d feel even worse about it all! So in that way activism is kinda a little self-care as well.

What FiLiA also bought home to me is how small actions plant seeds, how little things snowball into big things and how many small actions and the efforts of many women together can make real change, so that every small action we each take individually, that may feel like pissing in the wind at times, each petition or crowdfund we support, each tweet we amplify, each letter we send, each short conversation we have with people in our lives, can together support real change.

Anyway, that’s what I want to do. (At least) One Thing Every Day.

Yesterday I wrote a positive feedback comment to the BBC
about the Nolan podcasts, thanking them and a short explanation of how I feel betrayed, as “an LGBT person” that Stonewall now actively campaigns against my rights and interests, and worse that public bodies wholesale delegate responsibility for policy to them. www.bbc.co.uk/contact/comments-feedback/#/Your%20comment

Today, I have donated to a crowdjustice campaign for children conceived by rape to be recognised as secondary victims of the crime. Can’t post the link here as rules but if you search on crowd justice for “ Forgotten victims: conceived in rape” you’ll find it. Sharing on Twitter and here is part of that action too.

Today I also want to send a submission to the FCA consultation on self-ID for reporting of sex on company boards, and hope to find time later to find the details for that and just write a short thing for it

What a lovely post to wake up to. Small positive steps all the way. Thank you Cwenthryth

TeamRex · 19/10/2021 07:38

Here's one for today - ACAS say that menopause affects about 50% of people. Details in the thread, you can use their feedback to let them know that they need to mention women.

That's a very good idea. Thank you for the link to give positive feedback to the BBC on Nolan Investigates, I'm drafting my comments now.

JoyousAsOtters · 19/10/2021 07:44

This is a great idea thank you so much for sharing.

BeBraverToday · 19/10/2021 07:53

This is great. I always feel less overwhelmed and more positive when taking a small actions. Positive feedback is a particular favourite for me so I will be contacting the BBC about the Nolan podcasts too.

Wildfart · 19/10/2021 08:04

It goes into great detail about trans men and trans women experiencing symptoms, it mentions both but never once says woman.

What a horrible, horrible piece of writing.

It is so over bearing it makes me shudder. If any creep at work tries to "educate" me with this terrible training they won't get very far.

Absolutely awful.

Wildfart · 19/10/2021 08:05

Sorry wrong thread, I have just read that hideous ACAS link.

Blessex · 19/10/2021 08:08

Gosh I love this and love this thread. I also just wrote to the BBC and thanked them for the podcasts :-). I contributed to Jo Phoenix’s crowdfund yesterday :-). Everyday I am going to do something (if not more then one). Thanks for this. If people can also post links here as well on what we can do thanks.

Blessex · 19/10/2021 08:09

Here is link to thank the bbc from another thread.

Oh yes can somebody help me with the FCA link and what we should be saying. Thanks

Strikemepink · 19/10/2021 08:11

This is really great.

As a general point, I think this is what we need for a number of consultations. We need a basic skeleton of what we need to say that is fleshed out with our own interpretation and stories.

I don't know if we crowdsource the answers or need to seed fund the likes of MMB to guide us but we need something.

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 19/10/2021 11:46

I am also in post FiLiA recover mode - as a volunteer I barely paused for a moment all weekend. Next year I'm going to take a couple of days off to recover.

FiLiA 2022 is in Cardiff!

I agree will all said in the OP & that Vaishnavi Sundar was an incredible speaker - there were so many incredible speakers too.

One thing every day!! yes I love it.

Motnight · 19/10/2021 11:53

Thanks for this thread Op ☺️

teawamutu · 19/10/2021 11:56

There's quite a few ideas in this thread too - maybe we should revive it so it's all in one place.

SpringCrocus · 19/10/2021 12:12

Yep, having been at FiLiA all weekend, I too have decided to do one thing each day. Yesterday was chatting to a couple on the train, today I've made a regular donation to a legal charity
It's a great idea.

Cwenthryth · 19/10/2021 12:13

It would be a good idea for a Twitter account wouldn’t it. Just retweeting campaigns and actions so people can follow to get ideas of the small things they can do each day.

Is there already someone doing that specifically?

I did a very simple response to the FCA consultation: asking how they were planning to define "self-identify as women" as there is no legal definition. How did they expect firms to define this themselves. As it is not a protected characteristic, were they potentially asking firms to record personal data unlawfully under the GDPR terms (by asking for gender identity for example). How can they make a meaningful comparison to existing data (such as the reports they mention) if they now change the terms of reference.

I have also sent them an FOI request to provide the EIA mentioned in the consultatin

CakeSale · 19/10/2021 14:51

This is a brilliant idea!

Here's another consultation for anyone else looking for their Feminist Good Turn Of The Day.

BlaydonRaces · 19/10/2021 16:13

Cwenthryth - The War on Women Substack (waronwomen.substack.com/) is brilliant for flagging up consultations, events, petitions, people to write to, etc. It's a godsend for everyone who can't follow this all day every day - I thought I was spending a lot of time on Twitter but only spotted the FCA consultation this week!

Leafstamp · 19/10/2021 17:53

You don’t have to be in Wales to complete this but our Welsh sisters would be very grateful if you would:

Ilkleymoor · 19/10/2021 18:19

Love this. Makes it feel possible to get involved and aware that you are doing something. Have also been accidentally doing it since Sunday and just made myself a list of the next 5 little actions.

JoodyBlue · 19/10/2021 20:05

Love this
