Go on!
Maybe send one to your MP too?

It will simply be thrown away. Pointless, expensive and bad for the environment.

Helleofabore · 13/10/2021 06:18

Why would a book by a Professor at that University been thrown away?

Or are you saying that a University library is no place for controversial reading material and university librarians censor the reading material of students?

PeriChristmas · 13/10/2021 06:23

Also buying her book is a simple way to demonstrate our support for Kathleen.

Peri — Sex Matters have already sent every MP and many other elected representatives a copy after fundraising to do this. There is a list of recipients on their website.

How? Evidence, please.
GingerPCatt · 13/10/2021 07:32

I checked their catalogue. They have both books.

KittenKong · 13/10/2021 07:54

I can imagine it being treated like the ‘suspicious packages’ we used to get sent to our offices in the 90s... (evacuation, call the police, assume its a bomb)

DebbieBustamove · 13/10/2021 08:00

Hi. I work in the library on the Falmer campus and can't see what you're hoping to achieve? We already stock her book. This idea is bananas.

KittenKong · 13/10/2021 08:08

Because the assumption is that the book would be be there. Or would have been trashed by the students (or staff). Maybe if they actually read a book...

KittenKong · 13/10/2021 08:09

*would not be there

NoNotMeNoSiree · 13/10/2021 08:10

Why? If I received it I'd just put it in the bin.
It's just doing the same type of thing as those religious people you see in town foisting unwanted leaflets on you '' to help you see the way'' or whatever

lanadelgrey · 13/10/2021 08:12

Would perhaps be useful to check that your local library stocks Stock and Joyce too. Perhaps going in and asking the librarian and ordering it rather than bombarding the university library, which has it already.

Lalalala no debate, not listening....I can’t hear you, my fingers are over my ears... I have to go to my safe space now!

My dad was an atheist. He was also had a curious mind and read on religion and would have discussions with the vicar. He thought it was interesting and would read around issues.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 13/10/2021 08:15

As a library though you'd assume they probably already stock different books and I see someone has already said as much so there you go

Sussex has nearly 20,000 students. They have multiple copies of many books.

And a University is a place to go to have your views challenged. And to learn how to think & debate.

Plus, it they get a surplus they can give them away to the students 🤷🏽‍♀️

I support Kathleen Stock 100% but sending copies of her book to the university library really isn’t a good idea. They already have the book in stock. Buying a few copies of the book and donating them to local charity shops would be much more effective at getting the book into general circulation.

PeriChristmas · 13/10/2021 08:20

It's actually the union not supporting the Prof. Not the University.

The more people who actually read this well reasoned book the better IMO.

University libraries don’t give surplus copies to students in the vast majority of cases, they go to booksellers to be sold off cheaply or pulped.

KittenKong · 13/10/2021 08:22

I saw a tweet this morning by a colleague sticking the knife in. So I’m guessing staff (and the posted who said they were a librarian there and would bin the book - but what librarian would destroy a book??)

N4ish · 13/10/2021 08:24

Having said all that I’ve just checked the Uni of Sussex library catalogue and they only have one copy of Stock’s book. It’s on loan and there are 4 reservations on it so it’s obviously in demand. Maybe more copies are needed but I would leave it up to the librarians to order more.
