The impact of TOJ on The Guardian sales

Interesting and recent (i.e. today) Twitter thread asking;

Has anyone else stopped buying the @guardian because of Owen Jones?

Lots of different opinions. I struggled to find any comments in support of him, quite a lot who won't touch The Guardian because of him, others who won't read it for other reasons and plenty who read The Guardian still but skip reading TOJ's 'work'.

The Marketing Director of The Guardian is Kate Davies. I wonder if she has ever identified TOJ as a bit of a liability for The Guardian/her job?

I stopped my sub because of OJ months ago, and told them why. Received no reply.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 12/10/2021 16:00

I noticed that he and Ash S instigated a bullying pile on against a woman concerned about her daughter. They will all their media power and privilege deliberately set some of their unhinged followers on this poor woman.

Mollyollydolly · 12/10/2021 16:08

What Owen and Ash did yesterday was loathsome. Didn't think I could have a lower opinion of them, but after yesterday I have. They make me feel physically sick. They are the school bully we all still remember decades later. A despicable pair of piranha's.

Dare I ask what the T in front of his initials stands for? Grin

And yes, I can't be bothered with the Guardian newspaper (even though it usually isn't bad) because of him. It isn't simply that I disagree with his opinions - I can live with that. It's the fact that he's such a sanctimonious prick who enjoys stirring the pot. Then, when it all blows up in his face, he plays the victim as though it's a proper instrument.

GothicaAutistica · 12/10/2021 16:10

Yes, agree with you @Mollyollydolly.

The 'T' is for 'Tiny'. Just a variation on LOJ ('Little OJ') except it appears he is shrinking.

I reckon Mole at the counter can explain it best;

Hmm. Sadly think it’s the opposite. The American market is much bigger than us and they seem to love him - think it’s probably because the left over there is becoming more of a mirror of Trump and therefore his bullying goes down well.

GothicaAutistica · 12/10/2021 16:44

Ah, thank you @secular111.

I thought it stood for twat!

GothicaAutistica · 12/10/2021 16:47

I'm not being flippant, by the way. That's what immediately sprung to mind when I saw it.

ScreamingMeMesaur · 12/10/2021 16:52

I didn't know he'd been bullying (another) woman on twitter. What a shitbag.

Me too!

Grumpyosaurus · 12/10/2021 17:08

I have a list as long as your arm of reasons why I don't read the Guardian anymore.

Talcum X is just one of them.

Just so that people coming to this thread know what's being discussed in terms of instigating pile-ons:

This is what journalists are these days.

TheRaisinGirls · 12/10/2021 17:12

I don't buy it now. Partly because of OJ but so many other reasons too eg their treatment of Suzanne Moore, their occasionally anti-women stance, and the general direction of travel towards slightly hysterical journalism, of which I suppose OJ is one facet. I am cautiously starting to warm to the Observer again, having said that.

MassiveHoard · 12/10/2021 17:18

TOJ is a bully. He should be denied access to social media platforms unless he changes his vile behaviour. I'm not fond of cancel culture but if you behave like he does there should be sanctions.

donquixotedelamancha · 12/10/2021 17:19

That is brilliant.

I think what annoys him most is 'the YouTuber Owen Jones'.

How many children do Ash or Owen have 0again....?

Nasty little wankers the pair of them.

WorriedWishingWell · 12/10/2021 17:28

After 4 decades of being a Guardian reader I've stopped, because of OJ, because of their whole understanding of what a woman is, their treatment of Suzanne Moore, their whole understanding of what a woman is, because I don't think they want to cater to the interests and concerns of a 60 something woman.

IvyTwines2 · 12/10/2021 17:32

And then there was this follow-up gem from Ash Sarkar today. Women who go out unlocked on social media are asking for it, apparently.

WinterTrees · 12/10/2021 17:38

That's awful. I'd seen the Mini Misogynist's tweet to the mother worried about her child, but hadn't seen Ash Sarkar's.

Whatever happened to #BeKind? I thought that was one of the core mantras of the rainbow brigade? Had it been replaced by #LockYourAccountIfYouDontWantAbuse?

KimikosNightmare · 12/10/2021 18:51

I started to give up on The Guardian in 2014 because of its coverage of the separatist referendum.

The Guardian has always been ignorant about Scotland. On the one hand seemingly oblivious that many aspects of law and education are different and on the other having some sort of weird Brigadoon/ Mangers Cider but in Scotland fantasy where Scotland is populated by people so much nicer and kinder and liberal than England.

I didn't mind that, as it wasn't what I bought The Guardian for, but I did mind when they started pontificating about separatism on the basis of their fantasy Scotland. The Guardian and The Observer oddly however came out in favour of the Union at the very last minute which just about saved our relationship but since then it’s got sillier and sillier on all manner of things.

I stopped buying the Guardian in part because they kept on referring to places in Scotland as ‘County, Scotland’ but to places in England as ‘Town, County’, or in London as ‘Borough/Area, London’.

I’m not sure LOJ was born when I stopped buying it though.

Whatstheweatherlike · 12/10/2021 19:09

The bullying behaviour today from Jones and Sarker has been one of the shittiest things I've seen from him, and that's saying something. It can't be described as anything other than targeted harassment. Yes, they may well disagree with the mother's viewpoint but quote tweeting her details knowing fully what sort of personal abuse and threats she would receive is abhorrent. I suppose to him it's just another woman who deserves it, much like Rosie Duffield and JKR.

He is my primary reason for no longer reading The Guardian but as long as their American market continues to enjoy him then sadly he won't be going anywhere. I'd like to think that as a very bare minimum someone would have a word in his ear about singling out individuals on his large social media platform and inciting abuse. In any other profession I'm sure that would be seen as a serious offence.

VladmirsPoutine · 12/10/2021 19:14

I don't buy the Guardian because I've stopped buying newspapers in general but I do follow them both on Twitter - Ash Sarkar and OJ. Ash is a wonderful young woman. I don't think OJ is more of a liability than any other journo with a particular leaning.
