You cannot opt in and out of safe spaces for women

She’s writing for the Observer, not the Guardian, but it’s spot on.

BraveBananaBadge · 03/10/2021 08:46

Very good from Catherine, so important to see Lammy being taken to task in black and white.

Closed for comments though as I can see it? Of course it is.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 03/10/2021 08:49

that article nails it VERY nicely

why is it OK for women to be worried about male violence sometimes but not others?

oh yeah, when it makes men sad we should just shut up about it, innit?

Yepnothatfeeling · 03/10/2021 08:57

Fantastic article. Any hope that those labour politicians, with their double standards, are likely to take any of this on board?

merrymouse · 03/10/2021 08:58

@DazzlePaintedBattlePants

A bit off topic but apparently the Guardian believes ‘In a turbulent era, the media must define its values and principles’

www.theguardian.com/news/2017/nov/16/a-mission-for-journalism-in-a-time-of-crisis

I can’t help thinking that if, to make head or tail of journalism on the Guardian website, you have to establish the day of the week it was published and on what continent, the Guardian is falling short.

Whitefire · 03/10/2021 08:59

Excellent article.

334bu · 03/10/2021 09:03

Thank you for posting.

Floisme · 03/10/2021 09:09

Thanks for the link. I remember Catherine Bennett having to come off Twitter when she first spoke up about self ID and single sex spaces. But she toughed it out and she's kept going. I applaud her.

FreeBritnee · 03/10/2021 09:10

Bloody hell. That’s hard to argue against isnt it?

merrymouse · 03/10/2021 09:13

It’s a great article. I hope some of it penetrates the skulls of the Labour leadership.

Threewheeler1 · 03/10/2021 09:13

So glad she tackles Lammy and his gobsmacking inability to connect the dots. His shouty man tactics this week have left me fuming.
Starmer & co have left me fuming with their outrage at the police whilst hanging Rosie Duffield out to dry.
Good article by Catherine Bennett. The Observer is a different beast to the Guardian altogether.

BordelDeMerde · 03/10/2021 09:16

Perfect. Thanks Catherine (if by any chance you're reading this).

Sundancerintherain · 03/10/2021 09:33

Very good article.

lanadelgrey · 03/10/2021 09:35

Isn’t it just. She has protected her tweets, I notice but I guess emails and letters to the observer

WarriorN · 03/10/2021 09:36

Very good

LublinToDublin · 03/10/2021 09:46

Excellent article so clearly written.
Thanks Catherine and thanks op for sharing

Helleofabore · 03/10/2021 09:55

The implications of everyday harassment, along with the data on male violence and killings such as Everard’s and Sabina Nessa’s, are liable to be ridiculed in this different context as invented “bathroom bogeymen”.

Yes

catzwhiskas · 03/10/2021 10:02

Very clear indeed. Except for the phrase “all women -trans or not” still leaves an ambiguity for readers. We know that tw are a subset of men, so is she talking about trans identifying females here? Otherwise the contradictions are clear. Wish the comments were allowed..

Fitt · 03/10/2021 10:16

Maybe it’s easy to distinguish between decent and indecent exposure.

Great point.

1Endeavour2 · 03/10/2021 10:26

Catherine, if reading, it's not just women of reproductive age. All females are vulnerable from the youngest to the oldest. Please remember male violence against children and all older women, many of whom still look younger. We are all in danger. There are; stats to show this. Men don't just stop murdering women above 45.

catzwhiskas · 03/10/2021 10:45

Yes absolutelyendeavour

mumwon · 03/10/2021 10:55

Predators hide, often in plain site, frequently in positions of power, &, more often than not, using roles where they appear to be helping society or individuals or with access to the vulnerable.

To assume that because someone just declares they are a victim of social injustice they should have access to spaces provided to keep a vulnerable group safe - without proof or without any regard for risk for that group - is not just unfair it is unsafe.
The issue - per se - is not about trans/cis debate it is about the complete opening of single sex facilities to ANY & ALL males without the ability to object to their behaviour or a way to protect ones self?
If a transwoman enters the space & acts with reserve & consideration to other sensitivities that may be different BUT I would argue if we go this way we need truly private & self contained cubicles the entry to which MUST be an open safe place. & they have to be cleaned frequently! There are examples of this that I have seen & they work.

I always can't help but wonder if clauses like that are edited in by the subs. Although imagine Catherine could have felt somewhat obliged to make sure that base was covered to avoid the hassle.
Abhannmor · 03/10/2021 11:00

Well said Catherine. Nick Cohen is good today as well.

frazzled1 · 03/10/2021 11:15

Excellent article.

More sunlight.
