There it is again, contradictory paragraphs, butting up against each other.
This “group of people who have been denied their rights for so long” but who had a law created for them less than twenty years ago, which allegedly is now completely out of date?
And why is it out of date? I suspect it’s because much of this movement and most of the people making the current demands weren’t even part of this group when that law was made.
This is a man-made group, created by doctors, relatively recently in the grand scheme of things.
How long did women have to wait before they gained anything approaching equality under the law?
It was illegal to be gay. You could be thrown in prison for loving the wrong person. That’s active persecution under the law. How long did those people wait for something approaching equality under the law?
It was never illegal to transition in the UK. There has never been a similar lack of rights or legal protections for those who transition. Indeed, male transitioners began to move in on women’s spaces without even needing any new rights, and once they were there, their right to be there was strengthened very quickly, by that law Lammy is saying is now inadequate. That suggests these people have rights that are evolving as rapidly as their movement is growing. It’s certainly not correct to suggest this is a group of people who’ve been left out in the cold for an unbearable length of time.
So sick of this hyperbole and the half-truths and untruths that are being spewed forth by people who I once might have respected, but now stare at in wonder that they are so deeply enmeshed.
How on earth did we get here?
